  • When he plays it looks fake. Like the video is sped up or something. His speed is unreal.

  • I credit Buddy Rich to what is probably my biggest flaw... If you could call it that. When i play even though I usually play Rock and Punk music, my fills, and breakdowns are all on the snare. I very rarely use the toms.

  • This is probably the only band he didn't have to yell at.....

  • Do you have the interview that came with this particular show? I would really love to hear it.

    Thanks!

  • this was 03/27/86. sadly, Buddy's last Tonight Show appearance.

  • @cadillacdude1975

No this was in 1984. Cathy had Nick, making him a grandfather on September 22 1984. This was in November right after the Europe tour with FS. He did the show a couple more times after this.

  • bugle call rag

  • Best drummer ever to have picked up sticks!

  • Kafedus,,no he IS the greatest!

  • emm...to say he's the best ever..i dont know..

  • @Kafedus you shouldn't admit that you are dumb, keep it private

  • Man that drumkit sounded like hell! But Buddy is a crazy ass drummer - unbeliveble

  • all right severinson

  • Truly amazing, however, check out Neil Peart's Buddy Rich tribute. Rich was the best, but I believe as far as runner-up, Peart>Weckl.

  • You need to check out more old jazz drummers (Jo Jones, Philly Joe Jones, Blakey, etc.).

  • Awesome ! I have this cut its one of the collection i kept through the years from the Carson show He was truley The World's Greatest Drummer Ed Man

  • whew...I've seen almost all his videos, have one third of all his music, half on L P's,and saw him close to 20 times.....what a rush!!!!

  • LOL! He's awesome!

  • Holy crap. Age? Mellows? This guy is a MONSTER by any standard.

Check out Weckl and Wackerman. Good runners up! NOBODY in rock music. This is the (to quote Pastorius) the Real Deal, kids.

  • H. He preferred the basic kit set up.e was never a lover of the second hanging tom

He was never a lover of the second hanging tom. He preferred playing the basic kit and seldom used his second floor tom tom.

  • have you seen shaughnessy's prank with the paper tom cover? its here on Youtube. it is priceless. LMAO

  • Notice that he mainly plays snare, bass drum and cymbals throughout the song, and hits those taped toms maybe less than 10 times during the song.

The solo is all on snare. He pretty much ditched playing the toms and used what he deemed to be of use w/that house kit.

  • @soulbol The kit they set up for him was a joke. I like Ludwig drums but come on! The bass head wasn't even on the kit straight and that tape was on everything. Really a poor job of setting a set. It probably made him turn away from Ludwig.

  • @soulbol those Ludwig kits that he had to use on the Tonight Show always sounded horrible, like they had just dragged them out of 10 years of storage

  • it is amazing how time mellows someone.

  • Look at the Friggin Duct tape over the drum heads.

  • yeah, its to mute the toms, give them a flatter less resonant sound, theyre not broken or anything

  • wouldn't have been buddys idea, the late 70's and early 80's have a lot to answer for as far as drum recordings go, thanks to improved miking techniques this sort of tragedy will hopefully never happen to a tom again, might aswell been playing shoe boxes. Those doubles were insane.
