Love trend setters. Chris was certainly a trend setter when she came on board and Martina took fitness to new levels. Many others have brought change to the game such as the Williams sisters but Chris had concentration - a mind for the game that has not been matched
This is completely not tennis related but Wow! Did the commentator actually said "...she carries the pride of the Argentine race" (elle porte la fierté de la race argentine)?????? What the hell is the Argentine race???!!! I'm french and I'm revolted. So nineteen century!
I truely think Chris enjoyed hammering her opponents into the ground like tent pegs - make no mistake! Polite but sharp. It was the way she exerted mental pressure on lesser mortals. In this match she looks like a woman who doesn't want to waste time against an up and coming junior - 'just get on with it so I can play Martina and dispatch her too'. She was however more expressive (gracious perhaps?) when playing true champions - Goolagong, Navratilova, BJK - one or two others.
Sabatini's coach stated that Sabatini would be Evert at this match. Evert led 5-1 the first set, and Sabatini complained, quietly, about a few calls. Then Evert complained and the crowd went ballistic on Evert. Sabatini then played the crowd, and Evert played the ball. Chris was pretty curt with everyone except Mary Carillo. At the interview, Evert again stated that Sabatini could hit better than she could play.
gaby was born in 1970, so she was only 15 when she played this match..........i don't know if there was a youngest player who reached a grand slam semifinal at that age.........GRANDE GABY!
You need to wean yourself off those jealousy tablets. Navratilova was barely 5'6" in height and weighed 140 lbs or less throughout her career. Compare her to the Williams, Davenport or Mauresmo, to name a few, and they dwarf her in size (though not where talent is concerned).
Navratilova lists at 5'8." I walked passed her at Hilton Head in the late 80s, and met Evert there too. Navratilova is taller than Evert, and is by no mean a petite woman. She was an imposing person, and she was in a foul mood. This was right before she lost to Manuela Maleeva, queen of the moonball at that time.
I remember this match. I listened to it on the radio - France Inter. The next day, the unimaginable occurred. What an amazing streak for Chris Evert. Thanks a lot for the video.

Gaby had large shoulders just because she worked a lot with weights. What does Martina have to do with this?
Well. I imagine whta you're thinking about! it's simply ridiculous!!!
