  • I guess people don't realize that the big speaker is blocked for a reason. The internal fan draws air from the other opening in the bottom of the case, more specifically right above the memory and graphics card. To effectively cool the unit down better without altering the case is to put a higher RPM fan internally to draw more air. I just bought one online from china for $3.50 that has twice the rpm and cools the unit down by 10C. The thermo paste and pads also help alot too.

  • @MDCOMPUTERSERVICES I'd agree with you but the hardware results just say different the memory does not get as warm as you think, and the tool I used to check temperatures is graphics dedicated, the results significantly improve this, and cooling down the pipe is much better since copper is a much better conductor of heat then the outside airflow, and although the pipe does not affect the memory it does over all keep the systems core temperatures down.

  • Why would they make that port and seal it?

  • I have g51j-a1 it has the same vid card. I know there was some question on cutting the hole in the case, you would think it helps but then the hole bypasses it pulling air from the processor area. I have horrible temps, 80c just watching this vid throttled down to 1.6ghz and a cooler pad. I have ordered a new heatsink some g60s have a different fan casing, the casing extends all the way to gpu. I will post pictures when the parts come in.

  • if you cut that blue wire, what will the max rpm of the fan be?

  • @Rspizike 3,600 rpm

  • I've modified the cooling in my celeron 900 laptop with few simple solutions, first I replaced the thermal pads on the northbridge and cpu heatsink with arctic silver 5 compound (northbridge and cpu share the same heatpipe) and it ran alot cooler, also I went into the settings and changed the fan from off mode to slow mode, now it runs cool to the touch! Then I went ahead and removed a peice of metal that was blocking holes below the system fan :)

  • @MrTpengineer Arctic silver 5 ... nothing works better!

  • @Zenodilodon yep, I may even change to a pentium 4 HT and water cooling :)

  • my main computer is my laptop and I don't have one other

d oyou think if I cut me to the blue cable it will decrease the life

    of the fan ?

  • @Nvidia9700MGT yes, naturally, however i see many dead laptops with good fans

  • @Zenodilodon ok I don't touch it

  • I have a couple questions about the PWM.

First of all... I have a mic switch that I want to use, but I'm a bit confused. Is there any way to do this without soldering?

    I don't have a soldering iron.

?Could you explain the swithc in a bit more detail? Thanks

  • Fan mod successful. Mine is a little bit more ghetto. I decided to put the switch in the hinge cover, but the switch was slightly too large. Thus I had to use electrical tape to hold the hing cover in place.

Those were some small wires though, if anyone decides to do this mod use stranded wire if you don't want to solder, or don't know how to. no soldering was needed I just twisted the wires together and wrapped them in electrical tape.

    Once again dude thanks.

  • Good job, couple of questions. Where did you get the switch? How did you wire the switch. Tell me if this is correct. 1. connect 2 wires to the switch 2. connect one wire from the switch to one of the cut ends of the blue wire. 3. connect the other wire from the switch to the other cut end of the wire.

Any help would be great. I have the g51vx by the way, same exact design.

  • @TheSnappyfingers I got a single throw switch from a small microphone, any single throw switch will work, your wiring sounds correct for sure.

  • @Zenodilodon The switch that you used is classified as a "slide switch" (obtaining the name of that switch took far to long). Radio shack sells them and so does e-switch.com.

Thank you for the clarification about the wiring, as well as the comment about the microphone. It was greatly appreciated.

  • If i cut the blue wire only and add no switch will the fan stay at full speed? or even work? thanks..

  • After I get the mesh on which I have do I just cut the blue wire?

  • @wamspride yup

  • i told you about this months before you did it thanks for the creidt btw its pwm not pmw if your going to use what i told you without credit at least use it right

  • @thinkxalien yes it is PWM, I have a great case of dyslexia. I must inform you though that I have been doing this modification for years I just learned it years ago as tacho/speed mod and did not know the pulse width modulation term until you helped me out. If you did I honestly don't remember you though sorry.

  • Actually, upon further inspection, each severed end of the blue wire is connected to a wire, with both wires leading to the switch. My new question is...How does one acquire a switch such as this?

  • Could you point me in the right direction for where I would find information to copy your pwn wire switch mod? I plan on doing the switch mod, vent mod, and then laying down some better thermal compound.

  • wait so the cooling system of the laptop itself isn't good enough? I used asus n50 series and it fricking sucked

  • just throw it into snow... that will cool it down

  • @bestpctips Sure, and while your at it throw yourself in a money till so you can learn some common sense.

  • @Zenodilodon i was kidding haha. no need to freak out! i wouldnt actually throw my g60vx in the snow!

  • @Zenodilodon but in all honesty this mod is cool. LITERALLY! haha

  • @bestpctips lol nothing against you at all, I just wanted to be a smart ass... I do that from time to time =P

  • Ah thanks man, with the thermal glue can you recommend me some house hold materials i can use to help keep it cool, im planning on taking it apart cleaning out all the dust and glueing some metal on the parts that need most cooling, the main thing im affraid of is not being able to put it back together after openining it :o i'm nervous but it needs to be done because it overheats fairly quick, i think its filled with dust. Do you have any tips and pointers for a noob like me? thanks

  • can i use pennys instead of copper?

  • @spiderman34444 no, pennies do not have a smooth surface.

  • @Zenodilodon

theydo when you sand them :p

  • @spiderman34444

after1982 the pennies are made of zinc with a copper coating...I dont know if that makes a difference :p

  • your going to short out your laptop with static elec.

  • @knaxon You say that, and yet I haven't. I'm Very careful while doing work.

  • What will happen when I cut the blue wire?

  • @romarios5 The fan will go, and go, and go some more, and continue going... no pauses, no slowing down... just going all the time.

  • Comment removed

  • @Zenodilodon

will it also keep going if the laptop is off?

  • @romarios5 no

  • i suggest you to make a ram heatsink....

  • I wish I live nearby so I can bring my laptop for you to upgrade. I'm to affraid to mess up with my laptop inside part. Right now my laptop temp is at 93 C when playing heavy game, such as the sims 3, yea I know its lame but its my fav game, and its always slowing down after 2 hours of playing and require me to reboot my laptop. Sucks

  • Where did you buy the switch?

  • @ofspecialk I took it off a Sure wireless microphone

  • i was wondering if you could help me out making the switch mod...i cant find a vid how to make it and was wondering if you could give me a step by step tut on how to do it..i replaced old compound with new as5 compound ($10 at radio shack) and my temps while playing emulation went from 80c to a big 60c steady with max settings but fan ran on low and want it to run on high at all times and the switch would help alot

  • Can't u just Disable the smart gpu fan option in the bios?????

  • @hogcia66 No, you can't. The fan control is based on CPU temperature, and this computer does not have any ACPI to control it. There is no BIOS option to disable it either.

  • Everything has smoothed out now. The fan rarely shuts off and the temps hang around 44C C / 49C G. When the fan does shut off, it the GPU s-l-o-w-l-y climbs back up to between 58-63C, then the fan comes back on again. I guess it pays to wait. :)

  • One problem I have is that the fan won't come on when I want it to. The CPU is so cool that the GPU temps will climb to 70 before the fan kicks in.

  • Thanks for the guide. I successfully completed the fan switch. I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that in all 18 of my years, this was my first soldering project. I'm almost certain I did it wrong, but the switch works, so that's all that matters.

I put my switch on the bottom of the case in the corner. It's easier to do there because there's no bump to worry about. Just have to be careful not to damage the VGA port.

  • @Zenodilodon How did you mount the switch? I have an 6-legged "ant" style switch, The box part of the switch is flat on all sides.

  • @pcdude2143 I just carefully used a dremel and cut a hole in a free section of the case matching the size of the switch and then epoxied it into place after running the wires through.

  • sweet, I would do something similar, but ill wait till my warranty is out

  • @Zenodilodon So to clarify, the PWM is a manual/auto switch. So even though the fan was off, it would have come on automatically eventually? Also, does disabling the PWM let the fan run faster than what it is safe? I don't really want that.

  • @pcdude2143 The switch in the on position connects the PMW wire and lets the fan receive a signal from the mother board for speed control and activation. So yes with the PMW on the fan will reactivate with the computers thermal sensor, since it was so cool it just outrightly turned off the fan to save power. When the PMW is off the signal is cut and the fan for protection automatically goes to 100% of speed this is not bad for the fan it's just a little louder then you would be used to hearing.

  • Thanks for the video.

  • I wish I had that much copper. I have some from when I modded my M1330, which surprisingly enough was even crappier than this computer. It had a manufacturing defect that guaranteed death over about 3 months.

  • @pcdude2143 I bought my copper plating at a hardware and craft store, check there and see what you can find if you want.

  • Nice mods! My laptops gpu idles at about 60-70 celcius (140-158 F), and under full load it runs at about 70-90 celcius (158-194 F), and i also noticed your second harddrive is a western digital.

  • @ScottieNiven I only buy and run western digital, I have been for years and years.

  • @Zenodilodon Good, stick with them, there my favourite brand aswell.

  • @ScottieNiven and yet maxtor is on your thumbnail lol

  • nice job man. i actually ordered a new keyboard for my asus g60vx cuz my girlfriend spilled sprite all over it. the enter key on the number pad isn't working though. not sure whats wrong with it. if you have any idea of how to fix that let me know.

  • @b1g1freeagain Take rubbing alcohol and clean out all the ZIF connections where the keyboard sits in, soda may of gotten in the connections.

  • cool
