Ok, so it's 1:11am and just wanted to say THANK YOU. Thank you to all of you wonderful, kind, decent people out there who are living in my time and I in yours. Thank you for feeling the way I do and transmitting this energy which gives me soothing comfort that I'm not alone in my mind. That your atoms of soul and "little green cells" are dancing with Brian Ferry's words and the emptiness of life we all breathe, consciously or not so much, 24/7. Am glad you too feel the same chemistry I feel. x
Zen was the third actor in this film. She goes first to a Buddhist monastery. The ending whisper is like a koan similar to 'if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there does it make a noise'. Of course images of Mt Fuji may be a mountain to us in the West but is very religiously symbolic in Japan. She hurts her foot and a coat is returned in the end which are also very often used in religious stories. She is the lost seeker. He is the wise clown. Love is bigger than the two of them.
@tamerswan You may be correct about Bob Harris and his wife's relationship. I was just playing devil's advocate to 'partymedia' comment that Bob did not want to 'hurt his family or the beautiful young girl' and that 'he took all the pain, very unselfish act'. The beautiful young girl was quite annoyed when she caught Bob with the lounge singer and Bob was not forthcoming to his spouse about either the beautiful young girl or the lounge singer which is more deceptive than unselfish.
Wow. I have put off seeing this movies for years. A happened catch it almost from the beginning last night and I really loved it. It shows that kind of relationship I so hope excist, like ine Before Sunrise and Before Sunset.
I'm 47 yrs old and feel like bill murray...i cry every time i see this part scarlett reminds me of my ex who i should have married back in the day...awesome flick
@DVL55....you are right, it is magic and cannot duplicate it again....thought about this movie all day.....just love it and the soundtrack is lingering in my brain as well
just saw the movie again and it's nice to live in "the moment" .....in the now.... a great movie and hate. i guess to see it end like that ......but for the kids......maybe soffia should do a sequel eight years later!!!....um, maybe not...........
@charlieg1337 That's why it's bittersweet, the reality is they will never see each other ever again. But the moment they had was absolutely perfect.....for the moment.
@partlymedia I agree with your comment. Only a brave person with a lot of self control can resist this kind of temptation. I love this movie because it shows real love. He didn't want to hurt his family or this beautiful young girl. At the end he took all the pain, very unselfish act but very, very painful.
@MegaRosasalvaje It was kind of selfish to both his wife and to the beautiful young girl when Bob Harris spent the night with the red headed lounge singer?
Ever been on a business trip away from home? It's just all work and watching tv in the hotel room. Luxury hotel, expensive dinners and drinks at the bar gets old very quick. Then one day you finally make a friend a connection is what this movie all about.
How many have found ourselves wishing we had the same experiences...or, some wanting a redue? True magic is finding yourself in love...and perhaps knowing it can be spoiled by a act that renders it into the ordinary and mundane, choose otherwise. Sophia won an Academy Award for this, and I suspect those who voted for her, did so because, regardless of whom you are, how much money, or how old you are - such a simple act of decency raises each of us to that amazing pure level we knew as children.
@partlymedia Ummm....probably the best post I have read on youtube. I am still looking for the one. But I have learned that only one person in the world can make me happy...............ME! Once people realize that your life can do nothing but improve. If you are happy with yourself then only then will you find a companion. Sorry if I am philosophical, I just finished a bottle of blueberry wine. Be good to yourselves people.

.@partlymedia ...and this is part of my story. Sophia captures my own feelings of despair when the USAFSS transferred me from Misawa Air Base. I left my best friends in Hachinohe, and a beautiful girl, with hair this long - my halting Japanese was okay. We never even held hands - You don't touch good girls, and I loved her desperately. Utterly brilliant combination of song and movie ending, especially as the Tokyo city skies redden with evening and the ending of this brief encounter, filled with the simple love of one heart for another. Absolutely beautiful creation.

Thank you, Sophia. I watch in astonishment as you toddle about in Hearts of Darkness - who could have ever imagined the amazing genius festering within that sweet little skull?
there are moments in this movie that i want to cry to but i cant. scarlet is a goddess in this movie, and sofia coppola shows gives the movie a certain atmosphere that she seems to be using in all her films. this movie is a masterpiece and will ALWAYS stand the test of time. i just cant get enough of it.
This movie is just perfetc in any ways I couldn't describe it in one comentary... WHy is Bill Murray so funny and hot at the same time ? This friendship with Scarlett is absolutely adorable, frustrating, funny.. And I'm so glad someone made a video with this song.. xx Cause the wya he sings it in the karaoke is lovely..
Thank god for Sofia Coppola who definitely doesn't make enough movies but create masterpieces everytime.. <3
Some things truly were meant to be, and just because they didn't happen, doesn't mean they weren't. But if the timing was wrong, and someone else was already deeply rooted in something, there just isn't anything that can be done.
i liked this movie as a story in of itself, but what bothered me was having lived in tokyo 16 years, it showed a foreign perspective that does exist here, but is shameful and shallow. Sofia with all due respect has been a tourist to Tokyo and it shows in her interpretation of it.
@collins2067 wasnt that partly the point though? as visitors (and working visitors at that) they didn't have the time to see anything other than the superficial differences, so were naturally drawn together. And in some ways when they were treated as 'important visitors' this isolated them too.
PURE LOVE..I am a 33 year older.. and I like a 22 girl.. I still have my doubts and second thoughts due to the distance and my routine... someday I will tell her all the truth
I love the sweetness of this relationship, and how he did not compromise her but really displayed his love and affection for her. It was so much better than if they had sex - the intimacy is far more significant. Beautifully done video, and a great song.
This movie is so fucking beautiful. Every frame from every scene from start to finish is pure visual poetry, and the love story will gut you even if you're a jaded miserable old man like me.
I'm a middle aged guy. I have total disregard almost all the trash that comes out of hollywood. Cheezy chick flicks are no exception. However I had to watch this movie as a class assignment for a philosophy class I was taking. I was dreading it but it turns out I thought the movie was great. I'm still in love with beautiful Scarlett Johansson. The topic of the paper I had to write was "Did they cheat?" My answer was YES because there was intent. I don't remember the details of exactly why.
@lkeibkele I like your comment. That's an interesting question, did they "cheat". What behavior did you identify that constituted the cheating intent? Was it simply time spent together? Was it lying in the same bed? Or was it letting their hearts go a step farther into the feeling than they should have? I understand not being able to help falling "in love" with a person you find beautiful - I have done so, when married and when not.
@ytcarol When you watch the movie with the intent to answer that question you see so many things you would otherwise overlook. It is a such a beautiful love story that you miss all the moral dilemmas that are introduced along the way. My answer was largely based on the fact that they didn't try to stop the relationship from forming. The specific question I had to answer was "Does cheating require sex?" My answer is no. Marriage is formed by intent, and it is dissolved by intent.
@lkeibkele Ok, I get that. Not trying to stop a relationship from forming. Yep, totally understand. I have been exposed to that moral dilemma before, having simply opened my mind to possibilities... Yet, I do feel we can love more than one person at a time, even while married to one. It's complicated, with issues of loyalty and betrayal. Intent, or will, must rule.
@ytcarol "Yet, I do feel we can love more than one person at a time, " True (sadly, sometimes). Perhaps the more appropriate question is "Did they do something wrong?" Now that's a tough one...............
@lkeibkele Thats what I thought was so clever about this film. When Bill Murray had sex with the singer it was so meaningless it almost felt like cheating is only cheating when there is emotional attatchment
Thanks for uploading. Just made a little video to this movie, one of my all time favourites, with music from Apparatjik (a.o. members of Colplay and A-ha).

I don't remember the details of exactly why.
lkeibkele 1 year ago
@lkeibkele I like your comment. That's an interesting question, did they "cheat". What behavior did you identify that constituted the cheating intent? Was it simply time spent together? Was it lying in the same bed? Or was it letting their hearts go a step farther into the feeling than they should have? I understand not being able to help falling "in love" with a person you find beautiful - I have done so, when married and when not.
ytcarol 1 year ago
@ytcarol When you watch the movie with the intent to answer that question you see so many things you would otherwise overlook. It is a such a beautiful love story that you miss all the moral dilemmas that are introduced along the way. My answer was largely based on the fact that they didn't try to stop the relationship from forming. The specific question I had to answer was "Does cheating require sex?" My answer is no. Marriage is formed by intent, and it is dissolved by intent.
lkeibkele 1 year ago
@lkeibkele Ok, I get that. Not trying to stop a relationship from forming. Yep, totally understand. I have been exposed to that moral dilemma before, having simply opened my mind to possibilities... Yet, I do feel we can love more than one person at a time, even while married to one. It's complicated, with issues of loyalty and betrayal. Intent, or will, must rule.
ytcarol 1 year ago
@ytcarol "Yet, I do feel we can love more than one person at a time, " True (sadly, sometimes). Perhaps the more appropriate question is "Did they do something wrong?" Now that's a tough one...............
lkeibkele 1 year ago
@lkeibkele Thats what I thought was so clever about this film. When Bill Murray had sex with the singer it was so meaningless it almost felt like cheating is only cheating when there is emotional attatchment
