I meant the term as a metaphor, or conceit, say one loses one's love to the phantom of drug addiction. The specific, source for this poem, I guess, is THE SEARCHERS (1956) directed by John Ford, starring John Wayne. The poem is an elaborate, extended thought on love lost, and what might be the devastation, which follows.
