Fighting in hockey is necessary. In my playing days, if we couldn't have FOUGHT... it would've gotten much uglier, given that we were carrying around lethal weapons, and it's a sport that emotions run high in. Think about it.

If fighting were made illegal, guys like Ruutu and Hollweg would be running players like Crosby and Ovechkin every chance they got with no fear of the consequences.

If there was no fighting in hockey, guys would get injured left and right from dirty play. Having an enforcer on the team is a deterrent against that. I know that if a guy on the other team takes out my team's star player at the knee, a goon is coming off the bench to beat the living piss out of him. Awesome fight!!! What many people don't know is that rarely are there any hard feelings between these guys. I remember last year when they open miked Donald Breshears before a fight and all he said to the other guy was "hey, you wanna get it on?" without any sign of malice. Then they went at it. It's part of the game.

If there was no fighting in hockey, guys would get injured left and right from dirty play. Having an enforcer on the team is a deterrent against that. Of course, he won't be of much use if he doesn't have a tough rep... hence fights between enforcers off the faceoff, as we're seeing here. I know that if a guy on the other team takes out my team's star player at the knee, a goon is coming off the bench to beat the living piss out of him. It's not the only reason I love hockey, but it's one.

But can anyone tell me why they allow them to fight, risk injury, & act like dickheads towards each other in hockey but no other sport? No other sport allows this kind of conduct. Its unsporsmanlike! they need fights becuz if they dont people will run around crazy. hockey is different from many other sports. in hockey u get a tool and that tool is a stick it can be used by some pricks to hurt people. and thats why there are fights so wimps don't use their sticks without fearing the consequences. u can kill a guy with a stick if u wanted to but nobody does because u would get ur ass kicked.
