  • Ive been aiming for a sound like volumes where it's melodic and heavy and the softer chords can just sound good at the right times. I've been running my guitar through a presonus audiobox into pod farm. But it's too much for my little laptops CPU. I'd be happy with any of the beans that line 6 has but I'm not sure they would all sound good. Pod farm doesn't seem to come out clear enough for djent.

  • @underneaththesilence i use the pod x3 live. the x3 bean has the exact same amp models and what not so it sounds the same. you can also take a look into the pod hd models. those sound very ballsy.

  • if you can afford it you recommend the what by who?

  • @underneaththesilence axe-fx by fractal audio. but don´t just go out and get the thing because it´s the most expensive. take a look around in amp modelers. surprisingly the pod hd models sound extremely wicked.

  • is using amp modelers common with recording?? because im just going to run 3 mics in front of my peavey 6534+ and mesa cab. one tilted in faing the cone, one on the dust cap and then a condenser mic about 1-2 feet away. then i was gonna blend those together when i go to mix so i can get a fuller guitar sound.. haha does that make sense?

  • @norkalbmx amp modelers are very common for small time home producers like me who can´t afford a tube amp + cab + good mics + extreme loudness. although real tube amps sound wickedly awesome, in my personal opinion amp modelers are way more versatile cause (if you invest enough time and effort) you can get decent rhythm, lead, ambient, clean and fx tones out of them. with one tube amp you would need a bunch of pedals to get more tones out of it. in the end it´s all personal preference

  • @MojoJojo378 cool, thanks for all the info man.

  • Hey man, quick question. This tutorial is great but I downloaded your metal foundry preset because I LOVE IT. Sounds awesome! But whenever I load it to my SD2, its all muted! I can't hear anything!

  • @InterruptingCowBand so all the meters in SD still jump up? or more important question - did you update SD? cause someone else had some similar problems and it was fixed when he updated it.

  • @InterruptingCowBand Indeed, updating SD is the first step I'd recommend. Also - check what output the bus channels are using.

  • @MojoJojo378 OK the problem was just the output bus wasn't correctly set for me. Fixed it. But it doesnt sound as good as yours! Also, I have a question that I've been curious about for about 2 years since I started messing with home recording. On EZDrummer and Superior drummer, etc. whenever I adjust tones on the drum set in the application, it all sounds so loud and clear and more....up front, but whenever I use the drum map (GM map), it sounds much quieter and so less powerful

  • @InterruptingCowBand for example, when I click on the bass drum in the construct section, it sounds hard, heavy, and powerful. But in the "classic view" or the GM map, sounds like crap!

  • @InterruptingCowBand in the lower part of the midi map you have those vertical lines. those are the velocities of the individual midi notes. the higher they are the harder and louder the drums are hit. you need to set the default of those velocities to 127. that´s as high as it goes.

  • @MojoJojo378 Ok that works thanks! The only thing is I know how to adjust the velocity, but how do I make it the default? No way in hell do I want to adjust every beat :P

  • @InterruptingCowBand in the upper tool bar of the drum-editor should be a small option that says something like "velocity" and a number which i think is at the beginning 100 by default or something in that area. you just change that to the maximum and done. if you can´t find that option in that tool bar press right-click on the tool bar and see if the velocity has a check mark.

  • @pitakebabinkosto

I think you're right. It's pretty much inevitable that 'djent' will become a genre name rather than keep on living as a bare onomatopoetic word. I'd also say its pretty flattering towards meshuggah. Think about it, coming up with a sound that can only be described with a previously nonexistent word that would later on describe a whole era of music to come. Besides, it isn't unheard of that a word describing a sound would become a genre name. Take Bebop for instance.

  • You sir are a fucking genius! Much love!

  • These days, i would dare to say that Djent is a almost a name of that genre, because most of the people think's it as a genre.

  • Thank you so much, I've only began recording my solo material recently and this information is helping me a lot.. Like a guy said, it sounds really professional like Misha's productions and his are exceptional so well done. I can't wait to put it into practice.

  • @RoronoaOfficial i´m actually doing a new more in depth tutorial series. if i may redirect you to part 1 or it: /watch?v=i00E-O0cafA&feature=related

  • Djent isn's a genre by the way, it's so bad it isn't even funny!

  • Nerds know djent

  • @AlcoholicsPD haha, yes they do.

  • IM WAITING FOR NEW TUTORIALS!!! Your music is great, sounds like periphery productions i love em :)

  • Great vid Johnny, and especially looking forward to a vid about IRs, really need to start looking into them but have no idea!

  • do you only use the pod X3 into you PC?

  • @AlvaroSilvaSP yes, but now i also use IR´s.

  • @MojoJojo378 IR´s? what´s that? i´ve hear your new projects and songs and i´m very

interested in record with impulses, but i only have a pod hd,what else do I need?

  • @AlvaroSilvaSP IR means impulse response. the pod hd is all you new concerning hardware. to record with ir´s you´ll need an impulse loader and of course impulses. i´ll be making a couple of new tutorials soon including how to use impulses.

  • @MojoJojo378 OK and thanks a lot for the tutorials, when i finish my first recorded with my band, i will send the link to you for your personal opinion

  • Johnny, can you please include a little bit of how you point click program your drums in your next tutorial? Please, I do my drum programming in FL as I find the piano roll easier, I just can't imagine you getting those awesome fills by programming them! Show us what you got :D

  • @los of course. the plan is to explain ALL i do in my production progress as good as i can. i just hope i don´t miss any important steps.

  • Bring on the new tutorials man! Can't wait. :)

  • @lifeleech they´ll be done in febuary.

  • I don't know about you, but i don't agree with your mastering EQ OR your kick drum EQ. Looks like too much mids in your mastering chain, bring that wide add down a few DB, and roll off after 16k.

Your kick drum also has far too much subs in it, use the kick in for the main kick sound, click and punch, and use your kick outs for more bass response and more low end.

  • @davidkirbymusician i know, i know. that´s all me old set up which to be honest sucks pretty much. i have a whole new setup that sounds much better now and i´m about to do some new tutorials about that to get rid of the blasphemy :) i talk about here. but my latest uploads on my channel index page are not made with that new set up so you can´t use those as reference, haha. but thanks for the constructive feedback. i could need that on my upcoming tutorials as well.

  • @MojoJojo378 i look forward to your new tutorial d00d

  • @MojoJojo378 dude i think your nuts if you think your old set up sucks. it sounds heavy as hell to me. no need to change a thing in my opinion. keep doing what you're doing because it rocks.

  • @PitBullTodd1 well i got some good advice recently that made me notice it´s over-compressed and there´s too much going on in the low mid section. it might seem to sound heavy but actually it sounds uncontrolled. but i fixed it now.

  • @MojoJojo378 i still think it sounds great but i'm sure your new set up will as well. your music is awesome. on some of your songs you'll have a guitar solo that shows you can shred, maybe do that more often. shred ain't dead, peace!

  • sounds good |m|

  • is this program free once you installed it to your computer??

  • i guess english is not your first language? :D

  • @DiamondDimebagDarrel i´m german. but i hope you could understand me.

  • @MojoJojo378 Understood you very well!! english is not my first language either... I'm Croatian! :D , anyway really nice tutorial... i just wanted to ask you if you recorded guitar with external soundcard or directly into computer? something like Line 6 Pod or what is it called... cause i've seen that you used plugin for the guitar so i was wondering...

  • @DiamondDimebagDarrel i use a pod x3 live. it´s going directly into my computer. i tried to get a djenty tone with some free amp sims in my "new groove" cover, though.

  • Good tutorial dude! keep it up! learned a lot form this!

  • Hi Can you Please tell me what tone do you use for a six string guitar and what gaudge plz ? Thanks For the Tuto very nice Work !

  • @MLazyscientist i use the tones that you can download form the description. for the 6-string i use 11-52 or something in that area by daddario.

  • i can't download your SD 2.0 preset :(

  • @AboutSelix odd. i just checked and it worked. just try again and if it still doesn´t work give me your e-mail and i´ll send it to you.

  • @MojoJojo378 It works now !! you're soo friendly ! good

  • How to you have your guitar pluggined into the computeR?

  • @pearldrummer23456789 guitar - pod x3 live - computer - cubase. it´s as easy as that.

  • Hey man, these videos helped me a lot. Thanks for making the time to create them.

I have a new tone, and a new S2.0 kit that sounds a little like yours.

Check out my newest song on my channel to hear what your tutorials gave me. Compare it to an older track and you'll see what a difference it makes.

    Greatly appreciated!

  • can i bring izotope to the project during the record? or it is necessary to get it into after the recording? thanks

  • @ShadeLipGuitar you can load izotope anytime you want. it doesn´t matter if you put it in before, during or after you recorded the song.

  • Hey really nice video man, helped a lot! Anyways, I think that you can help me with a problem that I am having with cubase. For mastering I use Izotope, and I load it into my stereo out. When I hear my mix in cubase it sounds one way, then when I export it, it sounds a little bit different (stuff like the loudness, reverb, and other things sound different!). Any idea of what's my problem?

  • @Torqueofficial no idea, sorry.

  • @MojoJojo378 I just figured it out man! I had set the volume of my computer and the one in my interface different! So that was all :). Thanks a los anyways man!

  • How are you doing the glitchy stuf?

    vst for sound?(hats snares)

  • @andro41 glitch vst. it´s a free vst plugin. you put it as an effect on any track and it makes glitchy sounds out of whatever is on the track.

  • @MojoJojo378 thanks found this already by accident but

your reply is very appriciated. Again thanks.

  • Umm im not sure if im being a retard or anything, but whats the software your actually using to do all this on? its not cubase is it?

  • @TearsAndBlood2 it is cubase5

  • @MojoJojo378 Thank you very much for your reply! :) keep it Djent!

  • excellent video man

  • With your Metal Foundry preset, what was the average velocity you used on the drums?

  • @jayfaace actually my preset is pretty loud, almost too loud. so i just reduced the drum track by -5db.

  • Can You tell me about the BASS. What bass is that? Do You use any effect-pedal (sounds like a little "drive" right?) Is it recorded DI or with microphone and cab.? Whats the tuning? SOUNDS KILLER! Great job M8

  • @Kraftonia i use a pod x3 live. it also has bass amp/cab simulations. i basically just used a preset that sounded good to me (which also had the little bit of "drive") and fine tweaked it a bit. i play a yamaha rbx 375.

  • @MojoJojo378 I ask because I play the bass, and a bit of guitar on the sideline :o) I am very interested in Your bass preset/patch if You wanna share? Like to try it out on my Ibanez SR 5-string... Have You included bass patches in Your X3 "ForTiorI tones" ? Or will You be kind to send then to me? I will give you my mail if You reply to this, thx mate...

  • @Kraftonia yeah, i basically just used the "pawn shop punk" preset. if you don´t have it i could send it to you if you give me your e-mail.

  • how do you work on the noise reduction? I have that problem a lot with my bass, and boosting the highs is ofcourse not really a helping factor...

  • @sderoij i don´t use noise reduction. just cbase´s noise gate. put the attack, hold and release all the way down and set it to a fitting threshold. if it sounds too chopped off i set the release at about 80ms. but i´m sure there are some good free noise reduction plugins to download.

  • @MojoJojo378 Hey man, thanks for the quick reaction. I'm gonna try that!

  • 03:54 WOW THAT WAS MASSIVE... hehe...

  • and special thanks for metal foundry preset

  • @OMERTAHband glad i could help out.

  • very, very useful vid! thanks a lot for such great explanation of everything.

our band is working on upcoming EP, that we'll record at studio. But now, we are going to release some demo tracks, which we are recording at home, and your sound setups is what we are searching for :)

  • good job!

  • i've just checked the Triton album. and yes, I AM impressed. great work!

  • Thanks man

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH

  • THANKS MEN THANKS!!!!
