Great rendition. The songs name is actually "No Man's Land" and in the chorus the line used here "sound the death march" is often incorrectly sung especially by Irish bands. That is a line from "Streets of Loredo" whereas this song should actually be "did the rifles fire o'er ye". Mind right enough I did once hear Eric Bogle (the composer) tell an audience that he didn't greatly mind if the Irish bands got the title or lyrics wrong as long as he got his bloody royalties :-)
There's a gorgeous new version of this. Sung by a young woman - completely different take on it - sounds like she's singing into Willie McBride's ear. Have a look at Shaefri - The Green Fields of France.
Its a shame you have left England for warmer places, can you remember playing a small pub (The Plough) in the middle of the Fens near Peterborough, for an 18th or 21st birthday, a January afternoon. And at Johnny Byrnes "Geneva Bar" with the little Asian guy playing along with you on the fruit machine, priceless the look on his face when Johnny turned it off. Come back and play this cold and damp Island soon.
one of the best versions i,ve heard ( and ive heard a few) note to mdlagreca - look at someone who plays it not so well and work on it from there (SLF bit wit lyrics on t). Love and peace man (oh that wanker ringo)
I spent a semester in Northern Ireland last year. THis was my favorite song to listen to and sing along with in the pubs. Thank you so much for putting this up. Your version is beautiful, and it brings back wonderful memories!
It's beautifully sung, but what really gets me in watching the video is the way you're just throwing yourself at this song. It's a great piece of music that deserves people who care as much about it as you guys do.
just tuned in its a song i sing most weeks in rugby, the irish pub ( quigleys ) i tend to do it a bit slower but your version is great ,i did not know there were so many verse"s ,well done .
Wow.... I know this Song from the German Version: "Hannes Wader - Es ist an der Zeit" and the Original. But this is the Deepest Version I ever heard. Tears run from my Eyes. Seriously.
do you guys do any tours in the uk. if u do can u give me the dates. id love to come and see u guys in concert. its beautiful and i must admit since i first heard linda sing it, ive been mesmerised by it.
I must say, you have a good voice, nice guitar playing. i like to view them all to see whats the best version, ive noticed theres sad, harsh voices for this song, but yours is in betweeen.
hi there i watched your video of the green fields of france last nite, it is one of my all time favourites just a quick word to say how much i enjoyed listening to your version which is packed with such emotion and performed wonderfully. greetings from scotland
i know of talked on here before but i got to say every time i hear this song im moved, i love the last verse with Linda singing and tapping on the drum, it just really has a lot of emotion, did you ever think of doing this song for a movie or something. i mean in my boy jack that was on british telly a few weeks back this would have been really appropriate and would of brought a lot of emotion to it.
I've listened to a trillion versions of this song, but this one just stands above the rest.
My teacher played it to my history class because we are studying WW1, and I have loved this song since, but it's so hard to find a good version with the beautiful simplicity of an acoustic guitar.
brilliant. i was brought up on irish folk music and as i am maturing i am getting back in touch with my roots. this is my favorite rendition i've heard of this song. what a voice. when the drums come in i get goose bumps 3 times in a row and felt compelled to comment. wonderful.
thank you for sharing ur interest with us. i love the irish folk tunes and australian stuff, specially eric boogle's work. its in the mentallity of all of our great nations that we remember the fallen. have you heard and the band played waltzing matilda i think the song mentioned and this one makes such an impact on the young people if only they could see it and images of the horror it may teach them more respect i hope. do you both sing in europe or have you ever.
Yes I know "the band played waltzing matilda" and I will put that up here on YouTube quite soon, wonderful song.
