  • The proper title for the tool is "training collar". I've tried other tools--just buckle collars and and a fist full of treats (great with soft, easy dogs), a halti (Ididn't like it), and the prong. I hated the prong. It's a good tool for controlling the dog's head and I've used it to keep a young dog from devouring every bit of trash she saw. But for teaching loose lead walking to a harder headed dog--I prefer the training collar. The signals are clearer.

  • @earthshoes It does require hands on training to learn to use it properly, but it's only damaging to the dog's trachea if it's used wrong.

  • Choke collars aren't just made with chains. There is also the nylon version on it.

  • I use a choke collar, but I only recommend it for those know how properly use it. People should first realize these are train tools and not like you standard collar. I see to many people letting their dogs pratically kill themselves using these devices. Make sure the collars at the top of the neck. The lease should be completely loose except for when you are do a split seconds corretion(releasing immediately).

  • @Drummrr its the sound and the touching of the collar against the neck.... if you yank it and hurt your dog its just because you are an idiot. learn to use one without hurting your dog and it will be just as effective as any other walking method.

  • i have just bought a choking collar, i do have a boxer breed he is a 13 week old puppy, i kinda dont want to use it because i dont want to hurt him, but that is my last choice. his problem is he sees my 6 year old sister as a prey mate and i dont want him to grow up doing the same thing so what can i do ? instead of using the choke collar if you say its not a good idea

  • I think chokers are great. I own large shepherd breed and rottweiler dogs. You do need to know proper use. Would not recommend for small or delicate breeds. If you get a choker, look into the fur saver type, they can be used as a choker or not, and your dog does not get that nappy messed up fur around their neck. Never tie up your dog, but if you do, don't tie him to a choker!

  • Thank you for letting the public know that choke collars are not a good idea!

  • Nice tip man..

  • The only thing that dogs can learn from the infliction of physical pain is terror, which is the same thing that we would learn.

  • is it okay using prong collar for smalll breeds like standard size chihuahua.

  • @bombathreats i think that wuld b an absolutely horrible idea...dont do it not smart at all

  • @bombathreats no. many small breeds have a very weak neck. cmon, its a chihuahua! i dont even think they make prongs for such tiny dogs... although i could be wrong. have you tried clicker training? or other training methods? prongs shouldnt be used up unless you know how to use em. it can lead to negative behaviors that you may not want.

  • Good video, couldn't agree more!

  • Eric, I am curious about what kind of collar is your favorite when it comes to training? And how do you give correction normally?

I have tried every type of collar, flat ones, martingale, pinch collar, choke collar and gentle leader. My dog is used to the pressure of martingale and choke collar and I end up with the pinch collar now. But I would hate it very much if he needs to wear it for the rest of his life.

Thank you for all the great sharings!

  • beginning dog training from a store like PetsMart and/or Petco is far from what one learns eventually if they are serious and spend lots of money and time reading books, studying dog behavior and attending seminars before they would even come close to being considered good! Believe me, I know, I went through PetsMarts three month training program and now 10 years later, I know the difference 8-) I gave up mentoring for ABC College because of the quality experienced from their trainers 8-)

  • My lab does not get motivated by food doesn't matter if it's a piece of real bacon he sees training and wants out of it, he doesn't get motivated by food or toys I tried for months! The only thing I could train him was to heal and that's because I pulled on his collar like a choke collar.

I mean if I could get him to not pull and go chasing after dogs and cats every time he's on the leach without a choke collar I would. I wouldn't do this long term though, just as soon as he gets it.

  • you should try a prong instead. A GOOD prong will not affect the skin, its curve redirects pressure to avoid bruising. put a prong collar on your self and try it and then put a choke collar on your self and try it. Choke chain== badbad bruise

Prong= just a 'smack' feeling but no bruising

  • What about the link chain collar? I see most rotties wearing them. I don't think they're choke collars they're just metal chain link types. I have a bracelet that's similar. Any ideas? Are these ok as long as the dog is big enough to support the heavier chain?

  • music chick,

Thats called a Furrsaver collar. I use one on my poodle. People use it for two reasons.

1: if the dog chewss collars it cant bite this one off.

2: the fur can go through the spaces in the chain. My poodle matts up badly from other collars, but I have a much much less matting and collar irritation on my poodle with it, but I have seen them on Akitas and rots too for the chewing reason.

  • Choke collars should be illegal.

  • only for the idiots who don't know how to use it!!! What should be illegal is e-collars

  • Comment removed

  • @ImGoingInSolo e-collars are perfect for off lead training. A great example of this would be hunting dogs. Once you get the desired behavior you want the collar is no longer needed.

  • The "trainer" at Petsmart told me the pronged collar was worse. I dont use either-- I have a nice strong bridle and leather leash. No problema.

  • If educate your self is different, prongs are not for all type dogs, and not to bash on people but the trainers at petsmart and petco are not good. If it works for you fine! take care and good luck

  • Speak for the few trainers that you know from pet stores! I know a wonderful trainer for Petsmart that is about to graduate with her masters in Behavior Analysis and I work for Petco and I'm sure I could train circles around you! Don't make blank judgements based a few lack luster trainers... Many trainers for these stores are not the best, yes, but most are just starting out... there are a few of us that choose this profession due to the need for quality trainers in those niches!

  • The thing about being a trainer at Petsmart/Petco is that they basically give you a big binder on how to train dogs. If the dog is pulling on a leash- do this. Yes there can be good trainers at Petsmart, but that's sort of like finding a good chef at Burger King.

  • Wow... I hope that's not true at most stores! I train dog trainers for Petco and we spend 3 months training them. Yes there is a giant book (2 in fact) that they have to read and learn, then there is a written test and they have to practice with me before they are certified so that I can be sure they know what they are doing... I guess I'm a "good chef" and we have some high quality "burger kings" around here!

  • I can't use choke chains on either of my Chihuahuas because their tracheas can be so easily damaged. I have them both on harnesses to avoid that sort of problem, but harnesses just exacerbate the pulling when we go for walks. And, to add yet another problem, one of my dogs is a Houdini and can escape from her harness no matter how snug I make it... so, I'm not sure what to do.

  • Why would you teach a chihuahua how to heal?! You pull it and it is like throwing it behind your back :D

  • i dont like using choke chain because of there history but would prong collar help

i need to learn hot to fit them for i could use it on my GSD

  • personally i think prong collars are WAY better than chokes. they distribute the correction equally.

  • Do you recommend something other than a choke or pinch collar for a pulling dog? My bull terrier love to jerk me everywhere... But I wont use a choke collar, and I rally dont like the pinch collars so much either. Would a harness or one of those head collars work ??

  • personally i'd recommend a no pull harness or head collar

  • A Gentle Leader

    /watch?v=i6XMb2XRVVs

  • a harness would only exacerbate the problem

  • A 'half check' can do damage just like a check chain can, it depends on how you use it. I use one to prevent a dog backing out of a collar.

I never use a 'pop' on the leash as a correction - clever dog trainers can figure out how to never need to correct like this.

    Another good video Eric! :)

  • When putting the collar on, the part of the chain connected to the live ring should be on top of the dog's neck...the ring should never be any where close to the dogs trachea.

  • This is true what he is saying, but this is why we use a choke as a tool while teaching the dog what heel and other commands are, then we graduate the dog off the choke. it should not be a lifelong tool.

  • I was just going to go out and get a choke coliar for my dog.....not now, why subject them to the pain and they get used to it? No thank you!

  • Good for you! It is GREAT to see someone actually address the negatives of choke chain!

  • Isn't a choke collar and a choke chain 2 different things? I use a choke collar to train but it has the nylon collar with 1/3 of it being made out of chain so it squeezes together. Will this cause damage?

  • The nylon ones are usually referred to as "nylon chokes".

  • Good on you! There are so many better ways to teach heelwork.
