  • Country??

  • Wasn't this done for The Rolling Stones Roll & Roll Circus in 1968?

  • mick fleetwood on drums? sorry..can't all the posts here..

  • lol there only miming

  • How is this hippy music? This is good dirty Blues at its finest. Not a far stretch from Iommi's background at that time. Evil Woman on their self-titled album is a great rockin' blues song too.

  • @thelavendersheep its closer to metal than blues

  • @thelavendersheep

Yes. Blues is at the start of so many things. Metal wouldn't be what it is without Led Zeppelin covering Willie Dixon, without Cream playing Booker T, without Jethro Tull (that would a bit later produce quite heavy anthems), and without Black Sabbath, that was an obviously blues-influenced band. I have a great version of the tune you have mentioned, by Ike and Tina Turner: "Evil Man". From Ike to Toni, there's not so much of a stretch, indeed!

  • Of course, this pre-dates Zeppelin.

  • the studio version of wicked world is also played by Iommi's Strato

  • Weird to see Tony with a Strat.

This song reminds me of Zeppelin's version of Traveling Riverside Blues - the slide work in particular.

  • i love ian and the rest of tull. great music. but iommi belongs with sabbath. and actually this does remind me of a Zep song... Bron-Y-Aur Stomp off of III

  • My favorite guitarist with my favorite band, wtf

  • Tony left after 4 days :P

  • @MrOrion92 who cares martin is a better guitarists anyway

  • Better for Tull yes, but Iommi is just as good in his own right.

  • @louosman I think Martin is better for progressive music, but tony is probably way better playing hard rock and early heavy metal stuff. He is a "Riff-Master".

    sorry for my bad english.

  • I think this band itself doesn't get enough credit... good band alone... different than Sabbath but they influenced their schedule.

  • This is from Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, isn't it?

  • Good Tull song, by the way. This is the territory Zep finally entered in 71 on IV.

  • how funny just read aboutt his in ozzys new book , the video,,

  • i'm so glad tony iommi went with sabbath cause man this just does not sound like tony iommi at all

  • mothra1000 Yer right bro, Nov '68 at the Rolling Stones RocknRoll Ciorcus

  • I can't believe people are arguing about this. It's Iommi. The song was synced, except for the vocal. Tony just faked it to Mick Abraham's recorded guitar part. This is well known.

  • @lonelyboylv yes and ozzy wrote aoubt this in his new book said iommi had on the white hat,,

  • Is this true? The song on R&R Circus does sound different than the recorded version. Not sure if you're correct. The show was live for sure.

  • hippie music. poster is an idiot.

  • so awesome that tony was in this big name band at the time and left after 4 days to go back to sabbath or earth as known then, because it wasnt his scene and wanted to make his own music...now thats fuckin amazing man!

  • Tony played a left handed strat before it crapped out during the recording of the first Sabbath album. Wicked World was the only strat song on that album, then he switched to his now infamous SG guitar.

  • @mothra1000 American Strats can be smashed --whammy abused total torture ans NEVER crap out--unless its a fake or a korean--look at the attacks SRV Hendrix Rory G, Joe Perry Yngvie Malmsteen Blackmoore, myself(own 4) try to abuse any other axe like a srtat and its done. Strat will be loyal to you and in most cases just need a tuning!

  • I know wacmac, but that is part of Sabbath lore. His Strat crapped out. Maybe Ozzy stepped on the neck or something.

  • LOL

    possible explanation

    :)

  • They sound like the Kalishnikovs of Rock.

  • It's Tony dudes!!!!!! Read the history of Sabbath! This is Tony! This is '68 or 69 when he joined Tull for 2 weeks.

  • S U P E R ! S U P E R ! S U P E R !

  • whats the date of this? i've heard he was in it but i didnt wanna believe it hahaa

  • read the book "i am ozzy and it talk about why this happened..man i gotta tell ya tose 4 blokes in sabbath were a hell of a team!!!

  • Jesus Christ, read my subsequent responses before responding!

  • hell yeah it was tony. he;s left handed and this was when he was with jethro tull for a stint.he sure holds the guitar like him and looks like him too. and he had a STRAT before the pickup gave out and he changed to an sg before the first album was finished.this was most likely a lip synch though.

  • Not a lip sync bro

  • @salamonetalton strat gave out right after recording of wicked world

  • That is Tony.

  • That's not Tony Iommi - that's Mick Abrahms. And it's not hippie music - check out "My Sunday Feeling" from the Isle of Wight festival and you'll see that Jethro Tull KILLS! They had a new guitarist by then, though . . .

  • tony iommi is featured in the end credits of this movie. also it is a fact that he spent a short stint with tull. if this is not him then where in the movie does he make an appearance?

  • After I posted, I did some research on this - after all, this is the Rock'n Roll Circus, so the story on this Stones production can't be lacking in info, right?

Indeed, that was Tony on guitar - how I never heard that before, I just dunno. But as someone else pointed out, he's not playing live for the camera . . . . mea culpa.

  • This was from the RS Rock n Roll Circus. Looking at pick hand of this guitar player, he sure holds the pick like Iommi .

Messed up production that gets released 35 years later....

  • @rosenb37 Abrahms plays guitar right-handed. The guitarist in this vid is playing left-handed. Iommi plays left-handed. I'm certain it's Iommi.

  • You missed my mea culpa, Skippy!

I must say I'm dyslexic, so I never would have noticed an obvious subtlety such as that. :-)

  • so weird seein tony in here. sounds like sum country bumpkin shit you hear down at the bayou lol

  • This sounds like country to you? LMFAO!!!

Only an ignorant bumpkin would dare to critique Tull.

  • Tony so doesn't suit with a Strat, I mean I know it was his prefered choice originally but it's weird not seeing and SG

  • Please tell me Jethro Tull is in the rock and roll hall of fame ! I just found out neil sedaka was so...don't ruin my day ; }

  • Tony was only in the band for about two weeks so it's very fortunate that it just happened to be at a time they were filming Rock and Roll Circus.

  • The bass player lives next door to my drum student!

  • @paistecat what the adress ! !

  • Oh, brilliant! I was just going to say, "look at the bassist earning his money." Is that Glenn Cornick? Tell your drum student to tell him he still has fans.

  • Glen Cornick? Cool.

  • I can easily imagine Tony Iommi's fuzzy guitar sound on songs like Aqualung, Cross Eyed Mary and My God.

I guess Martin Barr's guitar style just *is* Jethro Tull, though.

  • Holy Shit! Tony Iommi is that funky white hat. Hey, pimp daddy. Don't go to the Devil -- there's no future in it.

  • Tony, all decked out in black, no suprise here... But I laugehd so ahrd at the white strat and matching hat. I never knew he played a strat! Haha. This made my day. :]

  • not surprised=)), but cool surprise

  • I hear that was his original guitar and the pickups went out on so he had to play his backup guitar. A hellspawned sg crafted from the bones of sodomists and drunkards. Capable bringing kings to their knees and oceans to a boil.

  • I laughed when i saw the hat.

  • hippie music...???? Never read a so wrong definition of Jethro Tull music...

  • this is the first time i've seen tony's strat, i've only read about it, I guess heres the proof lol

  • Phoenix: This is "Song for Jeffrey" from Tull's first album, This Was.

  • Though Iommi was not the guitarist on the album version.

  • The song is mimed by everyone but Ian Anderson, so it IS the album version. Your seeing Toni but your not hearing Toni.

The track was recorded by Mick Abrahams.

  • This is fucking rad! What song is this? Does anyone know? Which Jethro Tull album is this off of?

  • @PhoenixDerHamster the album is called "This Was" I suggest you buy it!

  • @PhoenixDerHamster A Song for Jeffrey on the album This Was

  • in a way Ian Anderson made black sabbath he showed tony how to get everyone involved in the band and for that they made great music but tony did most of the work:P

  • @iommi0

You do know Tony was already in Earth (later to be renamed Black Sabbath) when this occurred, right?

  • after this ....Tony went back to his mates ....in Brum ...and went on to play in some unknown band called Black Haddock....

  • Hey man, What you trying to say? Jethro Tull play hippie music? Excuse me,but this is progressive rock.Hippie is that crap of Mamas and the Papas.

  • omg, i wanna live at 60s -70s

  • this is some good ass "hippy music"

  • Can I copy and paste Tapes?....lol...This tune rocks!...if ya just want hits?....listen to your fav internet or radio station...but, always play your guitar....ya never know how good you can get!

  • Feeling...How ya feel?...Well I felt a head of lettuce once....Ooooooohhh...howd it feel?...Well....Felt like music! ( apologies to Monty Python) Love any tunes :)

  • Tony looks so different, and is he playing a fender???

  • At least in this video, Ian Anderson kind of sounds a little more like John Anderson.

  • I see this discussion it still going! :P As many already pointed out, this IS Iommi doing playback to Mick's guitar on the studio track. So all you "this is not Iommi" idiots, will you get your facts straight once and for all before posting, please and thank you!

  • @staaarboy

Why would Tony mime over somebody else's guitar? I know it isn't live, except for Ian Anderson's voice, but he did play for Jethro Tull for awhile.

  • I can identify a lot of pitiful individuals in this comment section. It's best not to even read these comment sections because they tell a lie. They tell us that the world really is bad off and that most human beings are at the level of a dumb beast with no regard for courtesy and little or no compassion for fellow humans beings. There is a lot of good in the world but you won't find much of it in these comment sections. So fuck every motherfucker that insulted someone here. Fucking fucks.

  • Lip Synched...

Good thing Tony lost that dumb white hat an the Strat.... and thankfully he want back with Sab... wise decisions all around.

  • Me gusta esta cancion! Ohh i like this song!!

  • Can someone tell me what is the harmonica key?

  • I don't know, but the song is in G. You can try...

  • This is Tony Iommi. You dumb shit,

he have played a little moment in Jethro Tull.

He had a Stratocaster o_o, prefer with his SG :D .

  • its iommi, here was only in the band for this filmming then he went back to his band earth which was later changed to black sabbath.

  • are you dumb? he played with Jethro Tull, it's not some kind of a joke

  • it is toni iommi you dumb shit

  • You're stupid.

  • At 00:15 Anderson looks like the famous Charles Manson tee-shirt photograph! LOL!

  • I can't see a slide on tonys finger, maybe he's using his metal tips as a slide. Thats fucking cool man!

  • no ..

this video was taken before he lost the tips of his fingers. Tony played with JT

for the short while during the brief time in 1968 after Mick Abrahams left but before Martin Barre joined. This video was for the Rolling Stone Magazine's "Rock and Roll Circus" - the truth of the matter is Tony hated it and basically quit straight after that

  • As Skullie pointed out, this is the 1968 version of 'Song for Jeffrey'; Jeffrey Hammond being a good friend of the band. The STUDIO version of this song -- for the 'This Was' album of 1968 -- features Mick Abrahams at guitar (not Lommi), bass and harmonica are played by Glen Cornick, drums by Clive Bunker, and flute and vocals, of course, by the front man Ian Anderson.

  • this is not hippie music!

    PSYCADELIC AND GREAT MUSIC ;D

    ian the master

  • Rishloo, right on! Good band and rare to see a fan of them in the wide world!

  • this was for a birthday party for Twiggy I believe..the recording was done on a giant Karoake machine from Iommis' backyard and Mr Tulls flute got flooded with slobber so they had to quit playing

  • The guy playing the flute is Ian Anderson. There was no one name Jethro Tull in the band.

  • No That's Mr. Tull I'm sure...That is Mr. TULL. I like at about 1:32 when you can see his reaction to a bug crawling up his leg...squirmy squirmy..............I know that's Anderson my friend..I's a just playin' around (a giant Karoake machine?!)Laters

  • This is the studio recording. lol

  • Dear Tony ditch these tossers and get back to Brum ...get down the pub with your mates Bill geezer and that mad singer Ozzy ...and go create rock history

    yours

    Ravensmead

  • this is wrong, having tony play music like this is like having martin barre play with black sabbath, it just doesn't work

  • their all pagans at heart. ahahahaha

  • lol

  • Having briefly looked at the comments, it doesn't appear that anyone has pegged the fact that this was done in 68- it wouldn't be until 70 that Sabbath released it's debut. That's kinda cool.

  • get a life and appreciate it for what it is a piece of real music

  • I bet noone knows tony isn't even playing here.

one, the only live part of this was ian anderson's vox, that's it. the rest of the band is playing to the studio version of song for jeffrey.

    two,

look closely and you'll see tony's gtr chord isn't even plugged in. tony was so nervous about doing this on the rock n roll circus that he grabbed that fedora @ the last minute to shield his face

  • this was for a movie idiot.....it wasnt for live perfomance thas why Tomy dont have it plugged in....wow ur truly idiot. This movie still exists i think tho its old.

  • What is a movie idiot? Someone who doesn't know about movies?

  • what movie man?

  • i asked the name of the movie fucking idiot

  • What is your aim with the foul language?

  • Yea, I saw that you asked the name of the movie. You still haven't learned to use a comma. That's not cool.

  • I want to draw a cartoon character of how I imagine you. You'd be a dreadful, frail thing with crooked limbs, arthritis, and other ailments. You'd also live in some dimly lit basement where you grumble to yourself about "fucking idiots", but no one else is around. The only "fucking idiot" is a product of your imagination.

  • im dying for him to crank into sabbath bloody sabbath mid flute solo

  • Iommi himself also states that he just couldnt handle the uncomfortable atmosphere in the band caused by Ian's isolationist attitude off stage and left to re-join Sabbath, who were a friendlier bunch

  • Unofficially the story goes that due to an old hand injury, Iommi had a unique style of playing which proved incompatible with Tull's style. He had only just been drafted in at the time of this performance and was miming. In fact Ian is the only one performing live.

  • too bad there's no recordings of Tony Iommi with Tull.... this recording is from "This Was" and Mick Abrahams is playing guitar.

  • are you sure?

  • I bought "This Was" right after I got their 2nd album "Stand Up". I know this recording like the back of my hand and it's straight off the album, even the vocals- every word is the same delivery and the mix is exactly the same. Story goes the tech crew spent so much time getting the sound right for the Stones no one else got a soundcheck. So because Iomi was a last minute fill-in for the gig- they mimed it. I think Iomi did pretty good miming a slide. Martin Barre was hired a week later.

  • I prefer Aqualung so far

  • That's when Sabbath influenced them.

  • stupenda

  • What's name of this great song? please

  • "Song For Jeffrey".

  • Thanks .-)

  • Great video! the term "Hippie Music" sounds degrading. This is great, pre-progressive rock song demonstrating the blues roots

  • hippie music?? what the hell? it's just a good old English folk rock band

  • If you compare Iommi's soloing on the first Sabbath album to Mick Abrahams' playing on Tull's This Was, you can hear how touring with Tull and playing Abrahams' parts influenced Iommi. He was the interim guitarist between Abrahams and Martin Barre. Too bad Tull never recorded anything with him.

  • this song is one of the best from jethro tull and they will eve stray forme

    old school forward

  • Tony really inspired that BucketHead KFC guy, didn't he? You can see where he had his fingers cut, fashioned an extended finger tip that allowed him his own unique playing style

  • From the movie 'The Rolling Stones Rock n Roll Circus' from the 60s!!!!

  • Yup, this is the record.

  • Haha,

I read that Iommi recorded much of the Album "Black Sabbath" using a white strat until it broke and he picked up a SG. That's it right there.

  • Jethro Sabbath

  • The guitarist on this track is Mick Abrahams.

    He was Tull's original guitarist

    Iommi never recorded with Tull

He is faking it for the stones movie that this is from

    Go look it up..

  • Listen to utacctcs! He´s right! Quit giving him thumbs down, ignorant fools!

  • I did look it up and you are right. They mimed this at the Stones request (to cut down on rehearsal time) while they looked for a replacement for Mick, says Wikipedia. I didn't know that. Good one, dude.

  • It seems that not a lot of people know that Iommi was in Tull before he was in sabbath.

  • oh yes good.thank you.now i know.

  • its a awsome song

i think its one of the best from jethro tull

  • Both Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull are monsterbands!

  • Both Tony Iommi and Ian Anderson are genius and have accomplished a lot in their own styles and with their own and bands.

  • well you people are morons who don't know shit about this music, and there for,not worth of arguing,...and,one thing-FUCK YOU DOUCHEBAGS.jethro tull rules

  • I love Black Sabbath, but you are wrong: Jethro Tull is a great band.Ian Anderson is a crazy man...geniuos!

    Sorry for my english :)

  • he is pretty crazy,i just like sabbaths music better i guess.its all good.

  • You are an absolute wanker.

  • dude, they weren't hippies...they were progresive rock band, way better than anything sabbath can accomplish... Iomi is nothing special

  • haha sabbath accomplished much more than fuckin jethro tull

  • actually they didnt.. but nice try

  • they definetely did black sabbath created a music genre tull didnt

  • LOL, I can't believe all the ignorant comments about Jethro Tull. You morons don't have a clue what kind of music they play. Ever heard of Aqualung?

  • I love Jethro Tull and I love Iommi and Black Sabbath and I think its good to try something else sometimes plus hes still great

  • jethro tull is a prog rock band, stupid

  • harmonica and bass at the same times, thats cool :)

  • From the Rolling Stones RnR circus. Excellent Dvd.

  • It's Progressive Rock beautifull song

  • Ian didn't do drugs. Very up front about it. He was a proponent of meditation.

  • the guy must be really high!

  • He has never taken drugs in his life.

  • wikipedia: 'This concert is the only footage of Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi performing as a member of Jethro Tull; he was a member for this show only as a favor to Anderson while they looked for a replacement for Mick Abrahams. The band mimed to the album version of "A Song for Jeffrey". This footage also included some of Ian Anderson's first attempts of his now famous flute-playing position, with one leg in the air.'

  • right sound...where are all these bands today?

  • fuck i agree...you know what.. technology fucked over music. now everything is computers not enopugh sole ... fuck now anyone with a dog can make an album

  • Jethro Tull wasn't hippies. That's the reason why they didn't want to play at woodstock.

  • why did they play isle of white then 6 month later as that was the UKs version of woodstock.

  • hippie music doesn't mean anything.

Jethro was part of progressive rock.

  • The Who, and Hendrix arnt hippies...

  • Comment removed

  • BS had nothing to do with hippie music....and also i think so about JT

  • If you know much about Sabbath in the old days, you'd know they had many hippie leanings, and though they weren't full blown hippies they were closer than most people think.

  • shut up!

  • WHAT HAPPENED TO MUSIC!?!?!

AHHH I hate the fact that if Jethro Tull came out today they would be too "weird" for people! True music is this. I see that sh!t on the radio as jingles trying to sell something... "Applebottom jeans.... boots with the furs....." WHAT THE F*CK IS THAT SH!T AHHHHH!
