How is this hippy music? This is good dirty Blues at its finest. Not a far stretch from Iommi's background at that time. Evil Woman on their self-titled album is a great rockin' blues song too.
Yes. Blues is at the start of so many things. Metal wouldn't be what it is without Led Zeppelin covering Willie Dixon, without Cream playing Booker T, without Jethro Tull (that would a bit later produce quite heavy anthems), and without Black Sabbath, that was an obviously blues-influenced band. I have a great version of the tune you have mentioned, by Ike and Tina Turner: "Evil Man". From Ike to Toni, there's not so much of a stretch, indeed!
i love ian and the rest of tull. great music. but iommi belongs with sabbath. and actually this does remind me of a Zep song... Bron-Y-Aur Stomp off of III
@louosman I think Martin is better for progressive music, but tony is probably way better playing hard rock and early heavy metal stuff. He is a "Riff-Master".
I can't believe people are arguing about this. It's Iommi. The song was synced, except for the vocal. Tony just faked it to Mick Abraham's recorded guitar part. This is well known.
so awesome that tony was in this big name band at the time and left after 4 days to go back to sabbath or earth as known then, because it wasnt his scene and wanted to make his own music...now thats fuckin amazing man!
Tony played a left handed strat before it crapped out during the recording of the first Sabbath album. Wicked World was the only strat song on that album, then he switched to his now infamous SG guitar.
@mothra1000 American Strats can be smashed --whammy abused total torture ans NEVER crap out--unless its a fake or a korean--look at the attacks SRV Hendrix Rory G, Joe Perry Yngvie Malmsteen Blackmoore, myself(own 4) try to abuse any other axe like a srtat and its done. Strat will be loyal to you and in most cases just need a tuning!
hell yeah it was tony. he;s left handed and this was when he was with jethro tull for a stint.he sure holds the guitar like him and looks like him too. and he had a STRAT before the pickup gave out and he changed to an sg before the first album was finished.this was most likely a lip synch though.
That's not Tony Iommi - that's Mick Abrahms. And it's not hippie music - check out "My Sunday Feeling" from the Isle of Wight festival and you'll see that Jethro Tull KILLS! They had a new guitarist by then, though . . .
tony iommi is featured in the end credits of this movie. also it is a fact that he spent a short stint with tull. if this is not him then where in the movie does he make an appearance?
After I posted, I did some research on this - after all, this is the Rock'n Roll Circus, so the story on this Stones production can't be lacking in info, right?
Indeed, that was Tony on guitar - how I never heard that before, I just dunno. But as someone else pointed out, he's not playing live for the camera . . . . mea culpa.
Oh, brilliant! I was just going to say, "look at the bassist earning his money." Is that Glenn Cornick? Tell your drum student to tell him he still has fans.
Tony, all decked out in black, no suprise here... But I laugehd so ahrd at the white strat and matching hat. I never knew he played a strat! Haha. This made my day. :]
I hear that was his original guitar and the pickups went out on so he had to play his backup guitar. A hellspawned sg crafted from the bones of sodomists and drunkards. Capable bringing kings to their knees and oceans to a boil.
in a way Ian Anderson made black sabbath he showed tony how to get everyone involved in the band and for that they made great music but tony did most of the work:P
Can I copy and paste Tapes?....lol...This tune rocks!...if ya just want hits?....listen to your fav internet or radio station...but, always play your guitar....ya never know how good you can get!
Feeling...How ya feel?...Well I felt a head of lettuce once....Ooooooohhh...howd it feel?...Well....Felt like music! ( apologies to Monty Python) Love any tunes :)
I see this discussion it still going! :P As many already pointed out, this IS Iommi doing playback to Mick's guitar on the studio track. So all you "this is not Iommi" idiots, will you get your facts straight once and for all before posting, please and thank you!

this video was taken before he lost the tips of his fingers. Tony played with JT
for the short while during the brief time in 1968 after Mick Abrahams left but before Martin Barre joined. This video was for the Rolling Stone Magazine's "Rock and Roll Circus" - the truth of the matter is Tony hated it and basically quit straight after that
As Skullie pointed out, this is the 1968 version of 'Song for Jeffrey'; Jeffrey Hammond being a good friend of the band. The STUDIO version of this song -- for the 'This Was' album of 1968 -- features Mick Abrahams at guitar (not Lommi), bass and harmonica are played by Glen Cornick, drums by Clive Bunker, and flute and vocals, of course, by the front man Ian Anderson.
this was for a birthday party for Twiggy I believe..the recording was done on a giant Karoake machine from Iommis' backyard and Mr Tulls flute got flooded with slobber so they had to quit playing

.it wasn't a movie, fuckwad. only tull did this kareoke nonsense. everyone else played, for real, LIVE, in the moment. The Who played A Quick One, LIVE and upstaged the Stoned so badly @ the stones own event that the stones never aired it on TV, which was what they were supposed to do. tony , at the time, was so nervous he FORGOT to plug his guitar in, JUST TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE HE WAS PLAYING. what a fucking idiot. and guess where i got my info from, asshat? one, the only live part of this was ian anderson's vox, that's it. the rest of the band is playing to the studio version of song for jeffrey.
two,

this was for a movie idiot.....it wasnt for live perfomance thas why Tomy dont have it plugged in....wow ur truly idiot. This movie still exists i think tho its old.
I want to draw a cartoon character of how I imagine you. You'd be a dreadful, frail thing with crooked limbs, arthritis, and other ailments. You'd also live in some dimly lit basement where you grumble to yourself about "fucking idiots", but no one else is around. The only "fucking idiot" is a product of your imagination.
Iommi himself also states that he just couldnt handle the uncomfortable atmosphere in the band caused by Ian's isolationist attitude off stage and left to re-join Sabbath, who were a friendlier bunch
Unofficially the story goes that due to an old hand injury, Iommi had a unique style of playing which proved incompatible with Tull's style. He had only just been drafted in at the time of this performance and was miming. In fact Ian is the only one performing live.
I bought "This Was" right after I got their 2nd album "Stand Up". I know this recording like the back of my hand and it's straight off the album, even the vocals- every word is the same delivery and the mix is exactly the same. Story goes the tech crew spent so much time getting the sound right for the Stones no one else got a soundcheck. So because Iomi was a last minute fill-in for the gig- they mimed it. I think Iomi did pretty good miming a slide. Martin Barre was hired a week later.
If you compare Iommi's soloing on the first Sabbath album to Mick Abrahams' playing on Tull's This Was, you can hear how touring with Tull and playing Abrahams' parts influenced Iommi. He was the interim guitarist between Abrahams and Martin Barre. Too bad Tull never recorded anything with him.
Tony really inspired that BucketHead KFC guy, didn't he? You can see where he had his fingers cut, fashioned an extended finger tip that allowed him his own unique playing style
I did look it up and you are right. They mimed this at the Stones request (to cut down on rehearsal time) while they looked for a replacement for Mick, says Wikipedia. I didn't know that. Good one, dude.
well you people are morons who don't know shit about this music, and there for,not worth of arguing,...and,one thing-FUCK YOU DOUCHEBAGS.jethro tull rules
wikipedia: 'This concert is the only footage of Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi performing as a member of Jethro Tull; he was a member for this show only as a favor to Anderson while they looked for a replacement for Mick Abrahams. The band mimed to the album version of "A Song for Jeffrey". This footage also included some of Ian Anderson's first attempts of his now famous flute-playing position, with one leg in the air.'
fuck i agree...you know what.. technology fucked over music. now everything is computers not enopugh sole ... fuck now anyone with a dog can make an album
If you know much about Sabbath in the old days, you'd know they had many hippie leanings, and though they weren't full blown hippies they were closer than most people think.
AHHH I hate the fact that if Jethro Tull came out today they would be too "weird" for people! True music is this. I see that sh!t on the radio as jingles trying to sell something... "Applebottom jeans.... boots with the furs....." WHAT THE F*CK IS THAT SH!T AHHHHH!

hippie music?? what the hell? it's just a good old English folk rock band

Haha,
I read that Iommi recorded much of the Album "Black Sabbath" using a white strat until it broke and he picked up a SG. That's it right there.

I did look it up and you are right. They mimed this at the Stones request (to cut down on rehearsal time) while they looked for a replacement for Mick, says Wikipedia. I didn't know that. Good one, dude.

It seems that not a lot of people know that Iommi was in Tull before he was in sabbath.

wikipedia: 'This concert is the only footage of Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi performing as a member of Jethro Tull; he was a member for this show only as a favor to Anderson while they looked for a replacement for Mick Abrahams. The band mimed to the album version of "A Song for Jeffrey". This footage also included some of Ian Anderson's first attempts of his now famous flute-playing position, with one leg in the air.'

Jethro Tull wasn't hippies. That's the reason why they didn't want to play at woodstock.
FredMalm 2 years ago 3
why did they play isle of white then 6 month later as that was the UKs version of woodstock.
Ayrshirenutter 2 years ago

loscantos 2 years ago
If you know much about Sabbath in the old days, you'd know they had many hippie leanings, and though they weren't full blown hippies they were closer than most people think.
