  • this is like sub machine gun. not quite jimi's machine gun!

  • LOL If his pants are bothering sum1 they need to go listen to less advanced music because they are missing the whole point LMAO...

  • Im tired of reading peoples arguments about who's the best. I know some of you guys praise SRV, and i do too. but, he's not alive anymore. neither is Jimi. someone had to carry one where they left off, and that guy is John.

  • @marKism69 Its funny that you say it, because I can play very note that Joe Satriani and Steve Vai have ever played. And I'm not saying that with arrogance, guitar is my thing. Now back to JM, there are kids I know personally that have been playing less than 8 years that will perform technically twice as good as JM on his best day. I swear on my life on a scale of 1-100, JM is about a 60.

  • Would that be a Roadhouse Stratocaster? Anyone?

  • and BTW - 3:52 is a perfect example of his Fail-playing poorly...

  • @Feverdream7777 whatever, as you say. i like you guys to see the solos performances of OUT OF MY MIND, BOLD AS LOVE, and GRAVITY.

after you saw all that videos, i like you to come and tell me again he plays "poorly".

look, and maybe if you could do his songs probably it's beacuse you are a good musician, but that doen't mean he plays poorly.

  • some sweet pants if anything

  • Comment removed

  • amazing..

  • F*ck he's good, can't believe people aren't more psyched, at least in my country.

  • I'm not sure what it is about his technically very good guitar playing that completely fails to move me, in exactly the same amount that Derek Trucks' guitar playing utterly moves me. Could it be that he is trying to hard? That the emotions that he is trying to muster in his instrument just don't seem to be there in him? Not sure.

  • @marKism69 Yeah. Stevie took the Hendrix influence and yet had his own distinction. Everything about Mayer, including his Bass player being seemingly locked up behind the drum riser, his lack of communication with band members and, frankly, his bandmembers reserved playing, seems to shout: "Look at me, I'm great". Hendrix and STV all did new things and remained humble. I don't see that here. Good player though; much better than I'll ever be.

  • @nottwozero Hey I give thumbs up to this comment for sure. There are a few moments where I can point out Hendrix had done the same...but that was a time when nobody had ever been that good before. With Mayer being this talented at rippin guitar he could really collaberate with other great musicians and create something phenomenal, instead he's just being really good on his own.But yea better than I'll ever be too..that is unless it gives me inspiration past humanity but I don't see it happenening.

  • @nottwozero

    yup...nailed it.

The greats are greats because they did their own thing.

Mayer is a good player, but he'll never be considered a great because he's just regurgitating SRV...poorly.

  • @Feverdream7777 ok, right. so you are saying that only because he made few covers of srv and hendrix?

he has an extremely personal style, he is awesome. oh and "NEVER BE CONSIDERED GREAT BECAUSE HE IS IMITATING SRV POORLY"??! yeaaaaaah, sure. for your information he is conisdered the new GUITAR GOD of this generation, by the rolling stone magazine. and he plays stevie covers PERFECTLY.

so make us jm fans a favor, and if you don't like him get your ass out of here!

  • @karenn11jm

Hun, I'm a JM fan myself. I sing all his stuff, I can play every note. And I'm telling you he's not that good... more than that, I'm saying that you people that think he's some kind of phenom are basically ignorant to real guitar playing.

It's like Hamburgers... McDonalds makes a pretty tasty good hamburger...but, it's shit compared to like... In and Out, or 5Guys burgers or Chili's or something... ya know what I mean???

...and frankly, I love his music...

  • @Feverdream7777 Im not a JM fan but have to disagree with you here. I think he is a very talented player - good improvisationist too. He is also respected by many very good talented players. So unless you are better than Clapton, Joe Satriani etc. you are probably not in a very good position to say that his playing "is not very good". My main problem is his playing is vain, and he seems somewhat of a poser. But technically, he is very good. I just don't care about technically.

  • @marKism69

it's a matter of attack dynamics.

His dynamics kinda suck for the style he plays.

  • Those pants be killer.

  • i just wish that he would put more focus on other parts of the guitar neck. he stays a bit too stationary here for my taste; it's mostly open, or pentatonic on 12th fret

  • Amazing video I'm so glad you caught this.

  • Without Jimmy John doesn't excist but, John is a motha $#%^ing Shredding!!!

  • Jimi Hendrix machine gun jam in the beginning, followed by voodoo chile, sweet.

  • I think some people read too much into this. It's just a bit of fun/improv with several huge nods to various Hendrix moments thrown in there. There's a few riffs worth nicking which is the main reason I trawl through all this stuff.

  • I agree with the "tutu" comment... This was truly a phenomenal instrumental improv. Would love to hear a professionally mastered live cut of this. Hint hint, John Mayer. Whadaya think? It MUST exist, eh? Keep on, keepin' on.

  • John Mayer is pretty much the modern day Jimi Hendrix on guitar... but better!

  • @nebogina I am sorry to say this and it should not be coming from me, but you are fucking retarded.

  • @Augustwi How exactly does a comment like that make me retarded? Do you think If I was retarded I'd be capable to comment on this video? Congratulations you are dumb!

  • @nebogina How does a comment like that make you retarded? Well thats quite easy to answer actually. While JM is a great guitar player he is no where close to being the guitar player JH was let alone doing anything better than him. If you said what you wrote to JM's face he would call you very kind but laugh right in your face and call you retarded for believing it. Also side note retarded people are very capable of writing comments just look at the internet in its entirety for references.

  • @Augustwi It's just kind of sad that you'd take youtube comments so serious... Don't you have anything better in your life to do?

  • @nebogina I am not taking it seriously at all really. I just saw that you were grossly inaccurate and misguided so I thought I would tell you where you strayed. Also nice try on the "get a life" nonsense this literally took a minute to write out. Considering I am not a fly that minute is not much a time commitment in comparison to my lifespan.

  • @nebogina The mirror reflects!

  • hate to sound mean...but it sounds like they didn't practice at all....the band is not good at improv.....total mess....John is amazing...love that he went into Voodoo

  • He is very, very good, but let's go easy with the "one of the greats" comments - especially when you consider this entire riff is a variation on a theme - then a direct cover - of a truly great Jimi Hendrix tune. I wonder if any of the teenie boopers in the crowd even recognize this?

  • Comment removed

  • His playing is really run of the mill. Poser all the way. Actually his pants say it all. Jimi is rolling over in his grave.

  • I wonder how he is on guitar hero....

  • You people with negative comments about stupid shit like cargo pants. Most of the GREATS don't and didn't give a fuck about what they wore or what you thought about it. Get a fucking life and get off here if you don't have anything positive to say

  • If I could play guitar like this I would go onstage in a tutu!

  • sorry for the obvious statement but he's GOOD!

  • All you people commenting on his pants, for god's sake, shut up. No one comments on your choice of clothing. This video wasn't shared because we're critiquing his personal style, it's because he is an amazing guitarist/singer/songwriter.

  • @amtreyn I know but it screamed out more than the guitar at the beginning...

  • @greenuns Jimi would have been proud no?

  • @amtreyn Whta's wrong with his pants? Why are people commenting on them?

  • @TheLateralusParabol I don't see anything wrong with his pants. but apparently people are "losing respect" because of his choice in clothing.

  • @amtreyn

he's not an amazing guitarist...he's alright.

  • @Feverdream7777 that's your PERSONAL opinion man, im sorry, but if he plays with clapton, bb king, buddy guy, etc i don't think that he is "all right", he is much more than that.

  • @karenn11jm

hun, he plays with those guys because he packs houses full and he looks up to those players as influences... not as equals.

  • WOW THEM PANTS JUST MADE ME LOSE ALL MY RESPECT FOR THIS DOUCHE

  • @pickaguitar id like to see you play one note as good as this, but know this guy u prob dont play guitar

  • Skip to 14:08 if you cant handle the amazinness

  • It sucks. I hate to be that guy but it does. Leather cargo capri pants? WTF.

  • @pickaguitar Congratulations, you've won the award for "most obnoxious comments on a single YouTube video."

  • That was strictly badass. All Fourteen minutes.

  • Them pants are gay. Great playing tho.

  • Leather cargo capris

  • clown

  • Leather cargo pants are now cool

  • are those pants wet? O.o

  • Reincarnation of Hendrix

  • Machine Gun then Voodoo Chile. One of the few mainstream players who has covered Jimi well. good stuff

  • Dude why are his pants wet?

  • unbelievable

  • KEITH CARLOCK PLAYS DRUMS FOR JOHN MAYER!? WHAT!?

  • 0:30 "is that a silly band"

REALLY!? this man is making beautiful art from his guitar and you're going to talk about SILLY BANDS!?

    art is dead.

  • like a boss .i love how he doesnt second guess anything and just hits everything like he means it

  • cuba gooding junior on the keyboard

  • John Mayer is a pussy, charging his girl fans money to take a picture with him. What a douch bag in the highest order.

  • @spicecrop Lol if you're referring to the video of him charging a girl 10 bucks for a picture, that was a joke. I hate that people mistake his sarcasm as being a douchebag.

  • @spicecrop haha no he doesn't

  • this video should be only allowed to be viewed at 1080p..

  • He is all skilled, no doubt he is great!!!

But....Because he is "free" it's okay for him to wear capris? Okay. I asked for opinions.

I guess that's the answer. Because he is free in a way I don't know about. Now I know.

Last I checked anyone is free to wear chick knee high capris.

I wish I had his skills - no doubt. Pants? Nah!

Maybe when you have people around you telling you everything you do is good, no one stops mid stroke and says... Wait are these chic pants my "stylist" gave

  • 10% skill

90% power harnessed from that v neck

  • John Mayer can play the guitar, I wish I was him BUT

BUT... dude, he is wearing capris.

2 things. Pay attention. Either I live behind the times, or John Mayer and my girlfriend are wearing the exact same pants.

Vote up if I am right. Let me know if I am wrong. I obviously dont know, because I didnt know guys wear those!!!!

  • @DecemberSean when you have that much money and your that good...you can wear anything you want

  • @DecemberSean

dude, he's john mayer. he can do whatever he wants. he is free in all of the way you are not.

  • Dude, he is so amazing on the guitar I would have his baby.

    And I'm male.

    And I'm straight.

  • @Narfdog john mayer is my man crush hands off :{P

  • @DonBallin Dude, I already gotta try and fend my wife off of him; now you're telling me I have MORE competition?

  • @Narfdog Keep telling yourself that! If YOU think so lmao

  • @Narfdog Keep telling yourself that lmao

  • @Narfdog That's impossible you don't have the reproductive organs OR the hormones for that!

  • Ending killed me. Hoo shit.

  • This a Hendrix Cover btw. "Machine Gun". Listen to the original

  • Same licks and guitar he uses at the crossroads festival of 2004...so so so so awesome

  • This has become my favorite YT video. Whenever I want to just get lost in Johnny's wailing guitar, I come looking for it. Please don't EVER take it down!!

  • then Stevie said "Let there be John"

  • @guitarguy476 Hahahah, YEAH.

  • @guitarguy476 YOURE A MORON! SRV WAS BLUES TO THE BONE!!!...MEANING, HE GOT FAMOUS ..PLAYING BLUES!!! JOHN MAYER DID NOT!!

  • @JackDawsonRMS its just a reference to John's primary influence, Stevie Ray Vaughan. I know what each one got famous for, I listen to SRV religiously and John Mayer is an amazing guitar player. There's no reason to get a big dick over who got famous for what, bro.

  • HE'S LIKE A FUCKING PROPHET

  • This guy is one of the all time greats. His timing, perfect notes, feeling, interpretation, ability to cross genres, ect. Real guitarist all love this guy.

  • I don't think anyone who dislikes him has any clue he could play like this.

  • Nobody does a cover of machine gun like mayer does, we are lucky someone decided to study hendrix/srv this close after they passed, so their story can be passed along for generations to come... Mayer is definitely the most meaningful pop artist of our generation.

  • where do you get those modern day mc hammer shorts?

  • charlie lost his shit when voodoo chile started

  • Voodo. Fucking. Child!

  • i guess its better that i was not at this concert...

the whole crowd would have been full of jizz. :X

    this is godlike

  • what song is this??

  • @TeddyGram32 3 minutes in is Voodoo Chile by Jimmy Hendrix.

  • and keep in mind that this is a crowd that was mainly consisted of teenage girls, who only came to hear "your body", especially when he first started. can you imagine that in todays world and in a time when there's such bad mainstream music in the US, one of the biggest mainstream stars is just having a 14 minutes long jam over some hendrix classics? and on top of it, that he absolutely kicks ass...

  • This may be the best thing ever. It sounds like the SRV version of Voodoo Chile

  • i was there

  • is this a song?? i have the exact same intro on my ipod but a different version.. and I think ive heard hendrix play this once.. and isnt this the same john played at crossroads 2004?

  • @FreaquedeMusique He starts with Hendrix's Machine Gun, and then when it stops and starts again, he is playing Voodoo Child, also by Jimi Hendrix.

  • I was literally crying tears of joy as he went from machine gun to voodoo child. Multiply your amazment by 1000 and you'll begin to come close to how great this show was and how genuinely happy I was after it. Truly one of the top 10 greatest moments of my entire life. Thank you, John... Thank you.

  • charlie wilson at 2:54

  • the drummer had to me sooo tired:)

  • his pants:) haha

  • @12.28 Jack Black impressions hahaa

  • crazy, but the capris gotta go bro

  • Stevie Ray version of Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo child. Stevie and John 2 distinct guitar players though. They let out signature tones that only they can do. Well thank GOD for Hendrix.

  • @crudestinkyjoe excellent ear...there would be no SRV without Jimi as there would be no Mayer without SRV...Don't sleep on Chuck Berry the Godfather lol and so on and so on...but imho modern electric blues/rock & roll starts and ends with the innovator, the often imitated, and certainly not duplicated Jimi Hendrix

  • hendrix is still alive!!!! he will be so proud!

  • now i know why all the walls in my house are white..

  • Machine Gun Hendrix

  • UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

  • @alittleinbetween Believe it! =]

  • @amtreyn AMAZING comeback :)

  • Is there only one guitar on stage ? or three like usual

  • @antony5linteau hi / only one guitar (jm at work), a little bit of organ (quartett), normaly played as trio (like Jimi rip),greetings from big jm-fan (germany)!

  • hes this good at guitar but his music is so commercial..

  • @certifiedchillin420 Just wait for his next record. :D

  • @certifiedchillin420

Well first of all he said he can't create this sort of stuffs, it dosen't feel like him as such

Secondly: you're not a very good musician if you doubt his skill even when listening to his albums, all the back to Room For Squares there are so damn awesome chord progressions and spectacular pop riffs. I'm not trying to offend you, rather than forcing you to expand your mind and learn that it takes hell of alot of talent to sound creative

  • @certifiedchillin420 exactly. Most of the people at his gigs would never hear tunes like Voodoo Child if it weren't for his commercial success. Thank god a generation is growing up with a standard bearer like John who can get young people into more "honest" rootsy music.

Mayer is a pop star: and Hendrix was a pop star. srv was a pop star. :D

  • @TobyEllisSongwriter you go ahead and justify his pop music. but i'll stick with quality musicians like the tallest man on earth who is far from commercial and three times the talent.

  • @certifiedchillin420 ok, well done? Good for you? I didnt say you had to listen to his pop stuff, only to appreiciate the good it does for young people as a gateway into getting into real, non-commercial music like what you listen to.

    -----

ontopic: Love how clean and clinical mayer performs, so relaxed, its the power of SRV but even more effortless.

  • @certifiedchillin420 Have you ever looked at the structure of his pop songs? The chord structures themselves are never dull. Besides he manages to keep them creative while still pop songs.

  • I was there! 3rd Row. Awesome time. This guy is my hero and inspiration.

  • what camera did you use to record this?

  • @bchamorro It's a Sony DSC-HX1.

  • How does this not have 100000000000000 views?!

  • @MorDrums young teens don't like Jimi Hendrix, they prefer Justin Bieber

  • @echunmusic Im 15 and i prefer hendrix lol

    -PEACE-

  • @MorDrums Cuz this sucks

  • @MorDrums it does its just not showing mine yet

  • Watching this live was one of the best experiences of my life.

  • Keith Carlock is a madman!

  • Nothing in this world I'd rather do than watch this man play his guitar.

  • @DonnaFirsty I'd rather play with him

  • Comment removed

  • Awesome! Great quality too, thanks for uploading

  • @vallorus your welcome. Thought people would be mad about the camera moving too much.

  • @amtreyn no way... it's too awesome to care about that. Do you have it set so that we can't share it? Cuz I'm trying to copy/paste the URL to show someone, and it won't post.

  • @DonnaFirsty I'm not sure how I would change those settings. If I set it that way, it wasn't intentional. I'll see what I can do about changing them.

  • @DonnaFirsty thanks! you just go into "edit" and there is a setting you can set for allowing others to share it or not.

  • @DonnaFirsty is it working yet? It was already set on allowing people to share it. sorry it took so long to get back to you.

  • @amtreyn No... you know what, I think it's a Facebook glitch, not a YouTube glitch. Thanks for trying though!! And thanks for uploading this awesome vid!

  • all I can say is WOW better and better every time I hear u

  • all I can say is WOW

  • MACHINE GUN!!! :D

  • WOW
