hey i have the 11" macbook air and i bought a 32" tv and with an hdmi adapter and i have it working but the screens will randomly turn light blue.. im assuming there refreshing is there a setting or app i can download to help me fix this??
how much does all of that bog down your mac? I'm looking to do this for sound engineering and running parallel would be really helpful, wondering how well it would work? - i have the i7 on my mac lol.
I wouldn't really consider this video's title accurate. This isn't what most users think of as dual monitors, at least its certainly not what I was looking for. When I say dual monitors, I want two monitors hooked up to my computer. Not a laptop screen and 1 monitor.
(NOT SURE IF I AM POSTTING IN THE PROPER PLACE FOR QUESTIONS)Thanks for the video Jon, it was helpful. However, I have a question... I am interested in having my macbook air (11 inch) in clamshell mode- and then use 2 other monitors. How would I do this? Since the screen is quite small with the 11" - I'd like to put it in clamshell mode - and then use 2 separate monitors. How would I do this? you can email me @ rgaetano AT me dot com. if that is easier.
I've set up this configuration for a while now but couldn't find how to change the menu bars. It was very annoying that they we're not in my large monitor ;)
i am trying to use my external screen to watch a movie in full screen but at the same time i wanna keep using my pro but everytime i just click something in my pro the full screen will stop? so how can i use fullscreen in one screen and use the other screen at the same time?
i've tried everything. But i've now come to use my Macbook keyboard so in the end i can't close it. Would be cool tho to put the laptop screen in sleep mode and use the Secondary Monitor as the main monitor.
Can you have the top menu bar in both screens? I just set up my monitors and I don't like having a program in one windows and having to go to the other to click file or edit etc.
@eggzeck Erm yeah it is. Macbook air have a screen witch is called monitors and when you have 2 monitors it called dual monitors. Hope i explained it good enough.
@Shaun4karate Come on It's not rocket science sherlock!! he's sitting in front of a window in natural sunlight without a light in the room. It's not the monitor that's for sure...
@BattlescapeFreak acually dude he said a dvi port and pointed to the dvi dongle so he was right because the mini display port has multiple female ends vga, dvi, etc
I use my active screen corners quite a bit so having a dual monitor system (hanging on the wall in front of me) makes it difficult to arrange my screens in the display menu. the external screen shows as larger than the monitor screen in the display menu. Because of this, both screen corners are unusable because I mouse over to the external screen. In the display menu I would like to resize my display sizes but can not get it to stick, any thoughts?
@ jon4lakers I also have a question- how fast is the external moniters refresh rate? I've used a program to use Firewire to do the same thing, but it was slow. What I'm trying to do is use an external to play movies and such (watching movies on a 13" isn't very impressive) and have my laptop screen to do other things. Is it choppy like with VNC or Firewire or is it smooth? Thanks if you answer this!
To work in clamshell mode a little easier, you can use a program called InsomniaX. What this does essentially is prohibit sleep, so the transition between dual to external-only and back would be really smooth.
I'm trying to get 2 external monitors on my macbook pro. I have a 27 inch but it isn't big enough for me to do audio editing and my macbook pro is only 13 inch. Is it possible to do 2 external monitors? I already have two 27 inch monitors and it's what I did with my desktop before.
Alrite mate how are you doing?? i was just wondering if it is possible to connect my standalone mac screen to my samsung lcd to run cubase music production prgram to split the program between the two screens.. what cables do i need?? cheers steve
Yes, you can. Google ViBook. You can use it as an adapter to hook up 2 monitors to the MBP. That's what I will be doing when I get my second monitor.
@xtinaschampion make sure your monitor is set up, then unplug the monitor from the computer, then close the laptop then plug in the monitor. it will start up as the monitor as ur bigger monitor
I think that they want to use the mac monitor as the secondary and the screen as the primary. Unless the person is talking about the clam-shell display which doesn't use the mac at all.
If you're using a Mac, go to your system preferences, then display settings, and if you have your other monitor hooked up, you will see it set as "2". You can then check it as the "main display" and position it according to where it's placed by your mac.
Can you use only the alternative monitor and not the MB Pro monitor yes use the keyboard on the MB Pro. Of course this doesn't work if you use clam shell mode because it is closed. Thanks
@soccermania1000 Actually you would plug in the keyboard to the MB/P. Clam shell mode means that the laptop is closed and that the built-in screen is off. The computer itself is obviously still on (not sleeping) since you can still use it.
@soccermania1000 Actually it would work with the keyboard plugged directly into the MB/P. Clamshell mode means that the laptop is closed, but not off. The only thing that happens is that the computer goes to sleep, wakes up but leaves the built-in display off. So the computer itself is still on (not sleeping), which is essentially like having a Mac Mini or Mac Pro (or any desktop computer) plugged in.
I did this with my tv so i could watch hulu on my HDTV, but is there a way so that everything is viewed on the alternative monitor as opposed to two different screens?
@MasterHasbar25 Lol, i posted that comment before i saw the whole video. Thanks man. I just closed the laptop screen, and now i can watch all my shows on my mac, using my tv as the main screen. Awesome vids man, keep it up
I had a MacBook Pro, I am sharing my hardrive with Windows XP. To switch to Windows XP I have to re-start or when I turn on my Laptop I have to press the key (alt) OPTION to get windows icon and click. Question: My external monitor it's going to work the same when I switch to Windows XP?
Its a setting on Mac OS X, When you want to change the wallpaper the window to do so is on both montiors, which you can select diffrent wallpapers on diffrent screens.
Yeh works with my 2nd monitor, drag the VMware window when its running to the second monitor and click full screen, Then youll have your primary monitor on Mac and Second monitor on windows

This isn't dual monitors.. it's a laptop with a monitor attached...
i'm glad you've taught us how to do what is perhaps the easiest thing on the planet to do.. you plug the fucking monitor into the hole and it comes up as part of your desktop.. it's a mac you shithead.
haha.. yeah. right. that why towers have (bear with me im just talking from vague memory) two 2.66 Ghz processors, four separate tb hard drives, up to 32 gb RAM.. come on. macbook pro is what..? max 500 gb hard drive, an available upgrade to a 3.06Ghz processor (only one) and 4 gb RAM? i have an imac, not even a tower and it would wreck any macbook. 3.06 Ghz, 1tb hard drive, 4 gb RAM.. come on dude. books are made to be portable, not to compete with a fucking mac pro tower. theres no comparison.
-Graphic cards Imac has a bit better graphic card but nvidea is better than ATI if it goes to gaming, and the macbook has two of them, and do can both work at the same time. But ofcourse ati readon is newer, so bit better.
-1 tb If you buy an extra external hard disk, it's the same
-3.06 GH SAME
SO, macbooks are almost the same as IMAC, but mac pro owns every computer.. just being realistic (exept super computers xD)
macbook pro upgraded to 3.06Ghz and 500 gb hard drive is an excess of $2,700. Whereas my imac with 3.06 Ghz, 1tb hard drive, and upgraded GC (ati radeon) cost me $2,150+ tax. not bad. expecially considering buying a 500 gb ext. hard drive to get to the equivalence of my tb in my mac would raise your mackbook's price a min. of $150. also, very inconvenient to carry around a hard drive because your computer doesnt already have it. all in all, for a book equivalent to my mac, you spend $800+ more.
To: bboynijntje... I DONT CARE WHERE YOU LIVE OR HOW MUCH IT COSTS THERE! If your macbook with all those upgrades only costs $2200 there, the imac will still cost less than that. imacs are better. get over it.
yeah but obviously if the tower is more powerful the laptop CANT do as much as the Tower, plus the only laptop that can really fit in a Manilla Envelope is the Macbook Air which just sucks. do to the crappy processor inside it
When I close the lid and hit a button on my external keyboard it doesnt seem to work. Plus when I have it on the highest resolution on my external monitor there is a massive black boarder.
You turn on your macbook pro, (make sure you have it connected to your acer before all of this and is turned on) and then you close the lid. This will immediately transfer your display from your Macbook to your Acer.
For the previous generation White/Black plastic MacBook, you need to get a mini DVI to DVI adapter, which if I remember correctly comes in the packaging...or mini DVI to VGA for analog video connections.
For the unibody 2008 MacBook you'll need the MiniDisplay port to DVI or MiniDisplay port to VGA connector.
Do you know how we can watch a streaming video (BBC i player/F1/Snooker etc) while still be able to carry on working on another screen. At the moment as soon as I click on any other application mail/photoeditor/excell the full screen video on another screen srinks down.
i've done this before..and ive done it with my macbook closed.and only use the monitor..my question is can i add 2 monitors and have the macbook closed?? your set up is kool..mac makes me proud..haha yes mac all the way'
dude nice vid , i have a 2008 macbook and 2008 imac , and i was wondering can i do this ?? i heard i can't but any advice would be greatly appreciated . thanks
Yes. BUT you can only hook one up with a mini-display port (these were the ports on the older models, I don't know about the newer ones). You will need a Mini-Dvi-DVI or Mini-Dvi - VGA converter (you can buy them at the Apple Store). Plug the converter into the mini-display port and on the other side of the converter you hook up the VGA or DVI port and then the remaining end of the cable goes into the monitor.. and voila. (I hope this was a clear post... lol)
fooking awasomw wish i could get a mac mainly an imac as it has a bigger screen i hate using small screens and the glarem on the macvbok is irratating
Think you can have the camera farther away? It's not far enough now.

-4 Ram SAME
-Graphic cards Imac has a bit better graphic card but nvidea is better than ATI if it goes to gaming, and the macbook has two of them, and do can both work at the same time. But ofcourse ati readon is newer, so bit better.
-1 tb If you buy an extra external hard disk, it's the same
-3.06 GH SAME
SO, macbooks are almost the same as IMAC, but mac pro owns every computer.. just being realistic (exept super computers xD)
Srry for bad gramm
bboynijntje 2 years ago
And besides, if upgrade your macbook pro to 3.06 gh, both cores will be upgraded, id ont know why u think only one will be upgraded, but oh well ^^.
But for the price of approx 2000macbook pro and imac are realistic. What do you want as a person with 32 ram o_O
Im dutch and im still going to school so thats why i have a bad sense for grammar xD
bboynijntje 2 years ago
macbook pro upgraded to 3.06Ghz and 500 gb hard drive is an excess of $2,700.

Wow, dude
Un live (I think) isAmerica...oih well
I live in holland zo is costs 2200
bboynijntje 2 years ago
To: bboynijntje... I DONT CARE WHERE YOU LIVE OR HOW MUCH IT COSTS THERE! If your macbook with all those upgrades only costs $2200 there, the imac will still cost less than that. imacs are better. get over it.

laptops are good if you travel a lot but towers own them in power.
captainclayman 2 years ago
to each there own u know
palmlanecg15 2 years ago
Yeah, but while a notebook hold Core 2 Duo, Towers can hold 32GB of RAM and 2 Quad Core Processors
LoliciousXD 2 years ago
yea but can it fit in a manilla envelope?! i dont think so... lol
NICKST3R182 2 years ago
yeah but obviously if the tower is more powerful the laptop CANT do as much as the Tower, plus the only laptop that can really fit in a Manilla Envelope is the Macbook Air which just sucks. do to the crappy processor inside it

When I close the lid and hit a button on my external keyboard it doesnt seem to work. Plus when I have it on the highest resolution on my external monitor there is a massive black boarder.
Any help would be appreciated.

You turn on your macbook pro, (make sure you have it connected to your acer before all of this and is turned on) and then you close the lid. This will immediately transfer your display from your Macbook to your Acer.

wich cable do i have to buy exactly for any monitor i have a 13inch Macbook laptop
thx anyway
kalkanciii 2 years ago
It depends on which model of MacBook you have...
Good luck :)

Hi Jon,
Do you know how we can watch a streaming video (BBC i player/F1/Snooker etc) while still be able to carry on working on another screen. At the moment as soon as I click on any other application mail/photoeditor/excell the full screen video on another screen srinks down.
Thanks, Roy

A brief monitor question, if anyone can answer it:
I currently have a 17" laptop running @ 1440x900
If I buy a 22" monitor @ 1680x1050 and try to dual screen with my laptop (extend my desktop) will windows get messed up as I drag them across?
What is your reccomendation for dual monitors at different resolutions?
Any help is appreciated
Thanks

Hi John,
i've also got dual screen set up with an intel iMac and a HPw2228h (almost the same as your display!) but I have 2 problems:
1. Ever since changing my wallpaper after going dual screen my system NEVER goes into automatic sleep no matter what I do
2. Whenever I select full screen during a QuickTime movie it always goes full screen in my secondary window (the iMac) and not my main display.
Do you think you can help??
Many thanks

will any monitor work with a macbook
skipper9712 2 years ago
Yes. BUT you can only hook one up with a mini-display port (these were the ports on the older models, I don't know about the newer ones). You will need a Mini-Dvi-DVI or Mini-Dvi - VGA converter (you can buy them at the Apple Store). Plug the converter into the mini-display port and on the other side of the converter you hook up the VGA or DVI port and then the remaining end of the cable goes into the monitor.. and voila. (I hope this was a clear post... lol)

hey Jon great tips! I have a Dell laptop and an i-MAC.
Can I do this with those and what cable should I get please?
I want to use it for photoshop so I can have my tools on one side and work space on the other.

unfortunately, you cannot use an iMac as a second moniter.
:(

I did this today, and it's a great way to make your mac better. It works so good, and it's cheap.
