It's not that Elvis is better than Tom Jones or vice or versa, but they have their own 'glory' in the songs they sing. I enjoy them both - Great singers that can grab your heart and make it special.
Like comparing apples and oranges. Totally different. Elvis was fabulous in his own ways. I respect that. Like LOTS of his songs -- his voice was great for lots of tunes that he covered better than Tom.
It would be interesting if Elvis had lived to see if he would have been able to stay as relevant as Tom Jones.
Tom's still touring 200+ days a year (at age 69), putting out new music (not just rehashing standards like some artists his age) - and is still HOT! Still THE VOICE!!
I seen where you also go on the E doing soul singing versus Elvis. You got a point there, but it's vice versa. Tom Jones doesn't hold a candle to Elvis on gospel? Wonder if it's because he poured his soul into it? Hrrmm. Both of these guys could sing better then almost anyone because they both had soul. Tinners couldn't even hit the notes either of these guys could hit, and there normal tone was in the basement. So how about with both just agree that their both great.
Hey m8 its very well known thing that Elvis inspired Tom, but its very well known thing among Elvis and Tom fans that Tom Jones also influenced Elvis, his live performances started look more like Tom was already doing, Elvis also started use more vibrato and lower voice on song bridge points, like Tom always did..
Tom has a black voice and can sing with heart, then he can sing soul, and Tom only sang gospel with Elvis when they were jamming, so u cant say Tom could not... E voice isn't black.
I'm not saying he couldn't. I just never heard it as much as Elvis. Elvis loved Tom, I love Tom. I just really love Elvis, and you really love Tom. Hahaha. Atleast we both know great singers when we hear them. Most people my age of 23 wouldn't like either of the two. Elvis really got me into him vocal simply because his gap in range was nuts. And how he could change singing voices better then anyone. I know he could do that better then anyone for a fact.
Elvis had like 3 stages in his career where he changed his style of singing. Towards the end of his career is the only time I could compare Jones and Elvis' vocals. Because in Elvis' early days. He was more rockabilly then anything, but when he sang a ballad is was probably better then, then it was when he was older. "Don't" and "Anyway You Want Me" are great songs vocally. Then in the middle of his career he had numbers like "Suspicion" that had the pretty boy sweet voice.
Then you move on into 68 where he got a little rougher in his tone with "If I can Dream", which was really soulful. Then you gut numbers like "Surrender" and "Its now or never" where he's hitting opera notes in it. And his gospel, geez man American Trilogy and How Great Thou Art, them is some big notes in those songs. "Hurt" has a big note. So I mean Elvis isn't nobody to knock off man, he was the most versatile singer ever in my opinion.
Now as far as who actually has the most range, I don't know. All I know is Elvis I've studied alot, and I've seen him change his voice so much it is just unreal. He has so many different tones, and regardless of what note hes hitting. He can turn his tone different cues. Like compare "Jailhouse Rock" to "Don't" then think of "Unchained Melody", thats alot of voice changing for one man. You can always tell its him, but I think that is what Elvis' voice so amazing.
And btw when tom was young and in choir, he sang Lords Prayer like Negro spiritual, and he didint know what that was or means... But the teacher got very angry, "why you are singing this like a bloody negro spiritual" so i bet that Tom can sing gospel very good, plus he btw did sang atleast few songs live, there was video of it... and it sounded great.
And for the voice range, Tom is high baritone and his natural voice in upper register, which is higher than elvis, cos tom is more tenor.
Whatever you say. Elvis' tone alone sounds better to my ear. But Tom Jones is certainly a great singer. If I where making a top 10 they'd but be in my top 5, for best singers I've ever heard. You act as if I'm dissing Tom Jones, I am not. I like the guy, but I don't think he's in the same building as Elvis Presley was vocally. Maybe on certain songs, but his gap in his range was no where near a Elvis Presley's. In my opinion. I even like Elvis' green green grass of home version better.
And also has in scale of piano ofc, lower and higher notes, Like High D...
Elvis highest note if i remember right is very very short high c.. And Tom sang high C's alot back in the day..
But yeah singing is not about who can hit the highest or lowest notes, i know..
I love them both, i think that Elvis had lot great recordings, and u cant argue about tastes really Elvis can be King but Sir Tom Jones Is known always as "the voice"
Tom Jones is one of the best singers ever. Elvis is the greatest singer ever. Baritone singer capable of hitting opera notes is just unheard of. Don't get me wrong though Tom is awesome, taking nothing away from him at all. I just like Elvis' version better is all, but both are good. TBH Ray Charles version is the best, but I don't think Ray had the vocals either Tom or Elvis had. It's just certain songs for certain folks that mesh better together.
First elvis can be in ur opinion best, but he is not.
Tom had lot greater voice, vibrato, control, power, emotion, RANGE, he hitted High D's And High C's and lower ones easily... And elvis never hitted so high notes and could not hold them as long as Tom could...
To me...TJ is the white Barry...both so sexy in their own ways...and when you have lived as long as I have and loved as long as I have...you will understand what I'm talking about.....
Tsir Jones, You obviously don't know what you're talking about man, E had more soul than anyone... ELVIS LIVES, Tom jones is great, But there is only one ELVIS,....
Wow...........I can picture it now......a lonely guy in a bar tuning into to the juke box, drinking his heart away........she left him.......nice song....such a powerful voice.
ohh man it is so untrue what you saying..Elvis version powerfull and you just can feel it when he sing it..Elvis can't sing soul music ?? all his love songs are not soul you try to tell me? Love Me Tender , Only You, Are You Lonesome Tonight..plz man Elvis had incredible voice.!
I totally disagree with you E was the white mans soul, along with his southern gospel background in which he received 3 grammys. If you don't think I'm right then maybe you just missed it somewhere. I love Toms and E's music, both timeless entertainers, Tom Jones has more sex appeal, when my 22 year old daughter ask who he is at his age, trust me it's sex appeal. hahahaahhah
Well let me tell you, Elvis is not a great soul singer, noone ever said Elvis is good on soul, cos he isnt soul singer, and didint sound black, like Tom did, tom shouted and gave everything from his entire body..
Elvis didint sang lot soul standards, like tom did cos he can and still sings soul, his new cd is full of proper northern soul...
And Tom is well known as one of the greatest white soul singers.. aka Blue Eyed Soul..
Well dunno but for me its Sir Tom Jones aka "The Voice"
This is the first song I remember hearing in my life, sung by Ray Charles. He was Dads favorite. Think about it, back in the day you had so many great and dynamic singers entertainers, this could have been sung great by a 100 different people. Today too many young great voices are trying to be just singers and not entertainers.
I didn't know this was a competition between Tom's version and Elvis' version. If you feel that Elvis is better why do you come listen to Tom's? To make nasty comments? To try to start an arguement?
oh. my. gosh. you really think some youtube video up here could turn somebody's perspective and passion on some kind of music to the reversed direction? damn.. learn how to proper spell even simple words and build phrases before you even try to mess around with something, you don't know anything about. someone like primo, debris or babu would kick many soundtechnician's ass out there. rap is about respecting cultures and is based upon soul and funk music from the very beginning. show some love..
kinda ridiculous.. stay inside your ignorant bubble made of sarcasm and intended missunderstandings.. i'm outta here. props to tom jones, he's got some damn fine and tight tunes in here but you obviously didn't get my message.
I can't understand these people...they hear Tom sing but they refuse to listen, they look at him perform but they prefer not to see.. come on..... Elvis and charles,, I have a lot of respect respectively.. but these video can attest, they pale in comparison with Tom. (Sigh)Is the truth really that hurt and hard to accept, for some people to be blind and deaf? You can't really argue in terms of taste! (sigh) That's awful!
