After the events of "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children", more than defining romance, Cloud continues to live with a pride in which he appreciates all the people who have impacted him in a great manner, who have made him who he is - which I think includes AVALANCHE, and most of all, Aerith, Zack, Tifa, Denzel, and Marlene.
I think what Tetsuya Nomura intended was not for Cloud to solely love one person, but to love many people, as when Sephiroth asked him, "What is it you cherish most?" Cloud thought of not just one person only, but Aerith, Zack, Tifa, Denzel, and Marlene.
To everyone wondering in this video about Aerith being a mother figure, Cloud may have called out, "Mother?" at the end of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, when she placed her hand on his head, but I don't think this entirely defines Aerith completely as a mother figure to Cloud. I think it demonstrates that she possesses a gentle and motherly quality that drew him to her. We can interpret this as romantic or not, we may never know, but all we know is that she is someone important to him.
It's stated over and over again Aeris was not seen as a mother figure to Cloud. Cloud care for her and started to fall for her before she was killed. Watch the movie again Satankight141 then maybe you'll understand. Aeris is not in love with Zack she liked him a lot but not loved.

@DonutRawr KH is an AU; in the extreme sense. The characters from FF don't have the same past as they do in their FF of origin. Their homeworld is completely different and they live completely different lives. So while it's the same characters, they aren't the same Cloud and Aerith in FF7; it's a completely differenet universe with the smae characters. In this universe Aerith doesn't die :) Hope that helped, if not say and I'll try to explain it in a better way.

It's supposed to be Aerith but in the original game whoever translated/wrote the transcript got it wrong (really there were some appauling mistakes made; 'this man are sick' :roll: ) When KH was released they tried to correct the mistake by putting what her name is actually supposed to be. This has just lead to thousands of fans getting stupidly anal about the whole thing.

He mainly thought about Aerith through guilt because at the end of advent children , she walked away with Zack. And Aerith said "See...Everything's all right." Meaning she's back with her true love. He didn't even look jealous , just relieved from guilt. Cloud really doesn't like anybody , it seems , but in time Tifa could be the one or he could die alone.

Zack was a very minor character except for in Crisis Core, and even there I didn't care much for him.

okay...please don't kill me for saying this, I mean I never really played through KH series, but...why is Aeris there if she had died (someone please explain the name change to 'aerith?'* It wouldn't make sense as an AU (?) cause in KH2, everyone is wearing clothes from Advent children, signifying that they are from AFTER she had died. or is it just that the old outfits were too inappropriate? am I overthinking, or is the game just one big time paradox...?

@DonutRawr KH is an AU; in the extreme sense. The characters from FF don't have the same past as they do in their FF of origin. Their homeworld is completely different and they live completely different lives. So while it's the same characters, they aren't the same Cloud and Aerith in FF7; it's a completely differenet universe with the smae characters. In this universe Aerith doesn't die :) Hope that helped, if not say and I'll try to explain it in a better way.

@DonutRawr It's Aerith because Aeris is a mistranslation. It's supposed to be Aerith but in the original game whoever translated/wrote the transcript got it wrong (really there were some appauling mistakes made; 'this man are sick' :roll: ) When KH was released they tried to correct the mistake by putting what her name is actually supposed to be. This has just lead to thousands of fans getting stupidly anal about the whole thing.

And the reason why the name is changed, as jmercuryuk said aeris is a wrong translation. I think Cloud only saw Aerith as a mother figure. And since he had part of Zack's memories he mostly felt Zack's love for her. He mainly thought about Aerith through guilt because at the end of advent children , she walked away with Zack. And Aerith said "See...Everything's all right." Meaning she's back with her true love. He didn't even look jealous , just relieved from guilt. Cloud really doesn't like anybody , it seems , but in time Tifa could be the one or he could die alone.

Cloud is SUPPOSED to look like Zack, because Cloud THINKS he's Zack, he wears the same clothes, carries the same sword, he fights like Zack, that's exactly the reason why Aerith feels he looks like Zack, and she says he reminds her of Zack. But she never calls him Zack. And please, the creators feeling sorry that Cloud is the main? if they wanted Zack to be the main, the would've made him the main.

@Zazychan you are so wrong. i already explained about the ass who changed everything. NOW the creator don't feel sorry about the game because they think "hey why not ride the groove of success" and cloud is so like sephiroth's groupie and that's why he went back to his home because he was all cry cry about him dying

@LysergIY And why would they feel sorry about it if the game is such a succes? You know the creators ACTUALLY said? They did say that originally they wanted the main charactor to have black hair, because that would be opposite to the villain, sephiroth's white hair. But they changed their minds because someone told them blond hair was more popular. But I think that hairstyle is no argument to say Zack = main. And btw, you can't use early ideas as "arguments" as it being the truth. Because:

@LysergIY As I said, because at the beginning Tifa was going to be a minor character, and they wanted a cutscene where it is suggested that Tifa and Cloud had sex. BUT they found it inappropriate so decided NOT to do that. Conclusion: very normal that when making a game/movie/book creators have many alternatives, change their minds, change the characters, etc....But that is NOT what happened in the game. So...
