this is good info. if my girlfreind and i ever split i would live in a tent and travel. live it up instead of just sat in your house thats skinting your pocket for every penny you have its ridicules. only problem is im in the uk and its freazin most of the time lol.
If you are young and very inexperienced at wild camping then I would suggest you take some one with you who has experience or go on a course first. Its very easy to become hypothermic in cold weather.
Hi Sean, been watching your vids a for while their awesome! I was camping in the Cotswolds just outside of Bath in early summer. Had nothing but a thin sleeping bag, ground mat and bivvy and suddenly the warm day became an arctic night! I froze in the end i turned my trousers into a turban, ate all my chocolate and did press ups to get through the night. From now on i always carry a survival bag.
hi sean gr8 vids! just wondering where abouts you wildcamp? thinking about going soon and still not sure wether to get a hammock or just rough it under tarp! thanks.
sean just wanted to say that me and my motorcycle club (tartan tally) have recently changed to camping with hammocks and i have use a lot of your tips for setting up our gear and i have found that everything you said to be VERY VERY helpfull so thanks you DA MAN
Dear Sean, Please could you tell me want you use as bedding when you sleep out? I understand that you don't necessary use a sleeping bag. Perhaps you could direct me to another one of your excellent videos on this subject.
@Oksendal5 It will depend on the terrain where I am camping. Basically any materials that will keep you off the floor. So leaf litter, pine/spruce bows, grass, etc. I have used Rosebay Willow herb stems. You need to make a mattress about 12" thick.
Sean, I have to ask a bout the leggings you're wearing in some of your vids. What are there purpose? We have plenty of snakes in Australia so something like that might make sense....
you should make a video on how to make gaiters btw i think all the info given in your vids is very useful and i appreciate all the time you spend to explain your techniques thanx a whole bunch
I agree with you, thats why I have been in the woods every weekend since January. I didnt always get to camp out there but I was always there for the dawn.
Yes, sounds nice! I realize I am fortunet to own a small plot of land next to others who like the forest area so I can step out into by yard and be in the forest. We walk in it everyday... but my wife is not into sleeping outside which is why I came up with the idea of building the shelter... I got some really good ideas from your winter survival camping videos!
Hi, i am living in the netherlands and your movies are very interesting but sometimes a little to long, i think you can make the movies shorter with the same information. The audio should be better sometimes but i am not perfect allso. Try to buy a wireless microphone to wear at your sweather, it will make your movies more interesting and better to follow. Greetings, Dion.
How about taking your sleeping bag poke a hole in the base just big enough to slide the connecting rope through like the way a hennesy hammock has a snake skin this way you gt in the hammock and pull the sleeping bag up to your headzip tight and use some velcro to take up slack or something to pinch it off to trap the air.
Have watched "Into the Wild" now and i must say this movie is one of my topp 10 list, a really great and true storry, feel like that guy in the movie all the time but cant seem to tagle my self out of the society, well.. one day ! ! .
Oh man, I wish I had seen this video before I went sleeping in the woods last winter :D I had a way too big of a sleeping bag, I slept directly on the frozen ground. Never been that cold in my life.
I really enjoy your videos. I'm a graduate student, and sometimes I feel like a lab rat; forever encased inside a building. Your outdoors videos are very relaxing, they make me feel like one day I'll get off this perpetual treadmill and get back to nature.
No he's one of few people who know how to live outside their house. That's not crazy in a time like this i think. Maybe you don't see the benefits of this yet.
oh sry, didn't understand and still don't exactly, maybe i'm a fool then. What i DO know is that the society i'm living in here seems to have little/no room for things like this.
Excellent, winter camping is great. There are not as many tourists about, and now the country side is starting to wake up. Both the animals and plants. Great times ahead.
BTW, if you have never had a large Buck "snort " near your shelter in the middle of the night, you may want to pack an extra pair of underwear as well! Until you know what animal it is it can be rather unnerving. ;)
Everything you said is spot on. That is exactly how I do it. I just spent a night on the Appalachian trail near Front royal, VA. I had a 8x10 tarp, a Marmot Aspen sleeping bag rated for 40 degrees, and a military wool blanket. I wear under armor as a base then layer from there, no cotton. I made my shelter as small as possible. It got down to 25 that night and I was fine, could have went to the teens with no problem. any colder I would want a better bag. Extra wool socks are vital!
wool will keep your feet warm all day even wet but it has very little wicking properties. i avoid cotton and wool socks like the plague because once you cool off you are doomed, i use cycling polyester socks as a liner and gortex socks with thinsulate. when sleeping outdoors in colder conditions you can dig a 12 inch deep trench that is 6 feet long, bury hot rocks from your fire and cover with dirt and then bedding, you will stay super warm in under freezing conditions all night.
I have heard of the fire pit method for keeping warm but have never tried it. Mainly because the rocks where I live shatter when you heat them up. Thanks for the message, I might try it when I camp else where.
The other advantage of using the firepit method is that there will be embers even in the morning so starting the fire again is a breeze. The only downside is that if the ground is very wet or the water table is high it won't work.
I used to have a vietnam-era jungle hammock. Pretty tough if you sleep on your side! But great if you sleep on your back. killer when you set it up like a tent on the ground too.
Good advice. One question -- what do you do to keep your back warm when sleeping in your hammock? This is a problem I still haven't solved satisfactorily.
I am normally a ground dweller and have only just bought a hammock. I like your tree huggers. I might make some of them for myself. Great design. I am intending to make my mattress out of leaf litter. Also I feel that by keeping the hammock closer to the ground it will reduce the amount of air flow under neath. If you can mount your tarp as a wind break and peg it to the ground on the wind side and angle the other side over the top of you. Plus a long fire you should be sorted.
Sean another good vid.Still I feel I must point out that the hammock was invented in the tropics as a method to keep the sleeper cool in steamy nights.Further I'd recommend just as you layer your clothing have a sleeping bag that has layers.Break up the soil where your bed will be.Check for rocks & roots.Put down a tarp, then leaf litter 4-6" thick then fold the tarp over, sandwiching the leaf inside it.Place you bag on this bedding build a reflector behind you & the other side of the fire.Toasty!
be careful you don't get shot!

What about folks like me who are allergic to wool? :-(
rawannelise 5 months ago
@rawannelise -- you can always put a layer on under the wool or try merino/smart wools which are less likely to cause allergic reactions.
