@haterz7621 bro ur name fits u perfectly. Hendrix is by far one of the best guitarists to have ever lived. Just because u don't have an open mind doesn't mean that there isn't the slightest possibility that this was inspired by Hendrix. And if u think differently then u have obviously never listened to little wing.
If you think pearl jam guitar riffs sound anything like Hendrix you don't know shit about music!! You can hand a five year old an electric guitar an he can make the same. Noise Hendrix does!! Get the f@#% up out of here
Today this song came on while i was washing my Bullitt Mustang and the sun was shining so bright it was such a clear day. i swear i just stood there and just stared at my car and smiled. Thank God for cars and Pearl Jam
@MiG2theL I've loved Pearl Jam since 1993, when I was 4 no joke, and haven't stopped loving them since. They are incredible, and Eddie Vedder has thrown away the notion of narcissistic lead singers out, being one of the most down to earth, caring people in the entire industry. I love this band with all my heart and will do so till the day I die. But as die hard Pearl Jam fans, I feel we should embrace all love shown for our band, rather it started with Ten in 1991 or 50/50 in 2011.
i personally think this song has no lyrics at all, but hes just speaking gibberish into a microphone, and letting everyone else just guess what he's saying and what it means. either way its an awesome song
this is one of my all time fave bands no doubt. But all you guys saying lil wayne sux. Really? Listen to anything he did before 05-06 it's actually pretty good. My music tastes vary like crazy cuz I like a lot of genres. But if you don't like rap don't say you think he sux cuz he raps. I agree he sucks anymore but so does a lot of musicians after they've put in as much work as him. Listen to i'm me, b.m.j.r, or it's time to give me mine. I can go all day really with his good songs but I wont.
I liked this song better back when I thought these lyrics were just mumbled drunken gibberish. Because these are ridiculously bad lyrics. Good song, though.
It's not "whether I'm the boxer or the bag", it's "whether it's a box or a bag", referring to a casket or a body bag. This song is about his friend's brother who was killed in the first Gulf War.
the one thing that sucked about the movie 50/50 is that they cut the best part of this song out of the movie and that is the amazing legendary sounding guitar solo!!!
It's about a friends brother that died in the early stages of dessert storm ... The letter is regarding his death ... The people on the porch have an American flag in their front yard ... As he hopes to get a wave for his brothers service to this country ...
wow..i remember when this song came out and none knew the lyrics he was singing,,even the radio stations didnt know..then i heard that there wasnt really any lyrics and it was a studio track that was never supposed to make it and ended on a flip side of a hit single they did over seas and made its way here..now i see the lyrics..wow .thats cool
this song doesn't even contain actual lyrics Eddie Vedder just mumbled through the whole song because he wanted to laugh at the posers who thought that they new the lyrics but in reality they were just making up their own song so dont go on to this vdeo for the lyrics because they are all wrong just go on to the video for the music
I don't understand why it matters where you heard the song, or who listens to what besides this. So what if you found out by watching a movie such as 50/50? You're still coming to enjoy the music regardless, and that should be enough of a compliment. And who cares if you listen to Lil Wayne as well, that's not stopping me from listening or enjoying this. Don't be a hypocrite and stop being ignorant.
I honestly don't care what the lyrics are, in this song the voice is an instrument just as much as anything else. I think the unintelligible stuff leaves leaves the song open to your own perception which is beautiful.
very much in the style of Hendrix. It's not surprising given this bands propensity to work with some of the old time rockers, Niel Young being one, great great song this is...
Thumbs up if you don't care about the people who found this or any other great songs on a movie/Guitar Hero, just happy they like good music and not following Lil Wayne.
@xflames121 This is genuine, badass music. And in regards to Lil' Wayne, he isn't as good as his moronic fans make him out to be. Who's worse? Him or his dumbass fans?
It's really a testament to how good of a lyricist you are when you can make up the words on the spot and they still SEEM to mean something (even though they're pretty unintelligible).
I remember my mom listening to this all the time back when I was in at least kindergarden, and now everytime I hear it, it takes me back to a time not so long ago when they still made good music.
@N0tCr4zy Know idea about "50/50" but a "half-n-half" is hooker slang for a blowjob followed by vaginal intercourse (or, I suppose, vaginal intercourse followed by a BJ, but who ever does that?).
Ugh trying to post the lyrics I think he is singing, they make more sense and sound more correct imo, I posted them over at songmeaning on page 7...can't link in youtube? (Keeps giving me an error)
Oh yeah can you see them? Out on the porch Ah, but they don't wave I see them Round the front way, yeah And I know and I know I don't wanna to stay Make me cry Oohh I see I don't know why there's something else On an carbine on a way Oh I said I don't, I don't know whether there's a box or the bag Oh yeah can you see them? Out on the porch Yeah, but they don't wave I see them Round the front way, yeah And I know and I know I don't want to stay I don't want to stay I don't want to stay

Nitpicking, but Eddie indicated the boxer or bag interpretations were wrong, since it's supposed to be a box or bag reference to a dead soldier coming home.

The line is not ... "I don't know wether i'm the boxer or the bag"...
( listen to it again,and again,and again )
The line is "I said I know weather where there a box or a bag" Now there may be some debate as to the " I know weather where " bit ,,But it is not BOXER people. It is BOX OR A BAG.
It was "I said I know whether where there a box or a bag" at 1:16. ( don't forget he was smashed out of his mind on heroin most days back then.) And it is BOX,,not BOXER.. It is about the way a Solider comes home from war dead...Only two ways,,In a BOX,,or a BAG. Hence the letter in the beginning of the song. And the two Military Officers who walk up,,but don't wave back. Because they bare the news of the death of a loved one.
my uncle came back from there drank his life away he came back crazy burned my grandmothers house down 2 times what the fuck he was nice to me he loved me same birthday feb 6 7tribes 6 white horses
@APBTisBeast this is a song about the Vietnam War, the real lyrics say "I don't know whether theres a box or a bag", meaning when you were killed in action (KIA), you were either sent home in a box (coffin) or a bag (body bag). Listen to this song with your eyes closed and feel its power!!
@haterz7621 bro ur name fits u perfectly. Hendrix is by far one of the best guitarists to have ever lived.
