  • @haterz7621 bro ur name fits u perfectly. Hendrix is by far one of the best guitarists to have ever lived. Just because u don't have an open mind doesn't mean that there isn't the slightest possibility that this was inspired by Hendrix. And if u think differently then u have obviously never listened to little wing.

  • TAKE IT BACK

  • R.I.P. Stevie Ray.

  • If you think pearl jam guitar riffs sound anything like Hendrix you don't know shit about music!! You can hand a five year old an electric guitar an he can make the same. Noise Hendrix does!! Get the f@#% up out of here

  • @haterz7621 no it's just that the riffs in this song sounds like they are inspired by JimmiHendrix

  • My wife loves PJ, what can I say, she knows her jams.

  • when he says make me cry its not just him its everyone

  • i don't want to wait on a box or a bag. nothing to do with boxers.

  • Today this song came on while i was washing my Bullitt Mustang and the sun was shining so bright it was such a clear day. i swear i just stood there and just stared at my car and smiled. Thank God for cars and Pearl Jam

  • Pearl Jams best Hendrix cover :)

  • Of about 570,000 views, about 500,000 are mine.

    Nuff said.

  • 3:50 to end, the most beautiful guitar riff ever composed PERIOD!

  • Gave me goosbumps and made my eyes itch with soft tears..... amazing song. explaines alot.... makes me happy

  • long live eddie vedder and pearl jam!!!!!!

  • <3

  • Yeah, what's Lil' Wayne? I'm sorry but I listen to music not noise.

  • If you're here because of a movie that came out in 2011 when this song has been around for about 20 years, get out, you're not a fan.

  • @MiG2theL what movie was this song in?

  • @hallez96 Came on during the credits of 50/50

  • Comment removed

  • @MiG2theL fag!

  • @MiG2theL I've loved Pearl Jam since 1993, when I was 4 no joke, and haven't stopped loving them since. They are incredible, and Eddie Vedder has thrown away the notion of narcissistic lead singers out, being one of the most down to earth, caring people in the entire industry. I love this band with all my heart and will do so till the day I die. But as die hard Pearl Jam fans, I feel we should embrace all love shown for our band, rather it started with Ten in 1991 or 50/50 in 2011.

  • i liked this song cause it somewat sounds like jimi hendrix castle made of sands...

  • i personally think this song has no lyrics at all, but hes just speaking gibberish into a microphone, and letting everyone else just guess what he's saying and what it means. either way its an awesome song

  • @freshsneakers759 My sentiments exactly.

  • @freshsneakers759 Wikipedia says it's about Eddie Vedder's friend whose brother died in Desert Storm. The vocals were improvised on the spot.

  • this is one of my all time fave bands no doubt. But all you guys saying lil wayne sux. Really? Listen to anything he did before 05-06 it's actually pretty good. My music tastes vary like crazy cuz I like a lot of genres. But if you don't like rap don't say you think he sux cuz he raps. I agree he sucks anymore but so does a lot of musicians after they've put in as much work as him. Listen to i'm me, b.m.j.r, or it's time to give me mine. I can go all day really with his good songs but I wont.

  • This is probably one of the most soulful, beautiful songs in existence. That, or it's a guy having a seizure into a microphone.

  • If you don't love this song and Pearl Jam in general then you have no soul.

  • loved pearl jam for years cant believe i'm only getting into this song now!

  • @slimsanta same here

  • THE LYRICS HARDLY CORRESPOND WITH THE SONG

  • I liked this song better back when I thought these lyrics were just mumbled drunken gibberish. Because these are ridiculously bad lyrics. Good song, though.

  • Love this song... two thumbs up for this classic song!!!

  • 50/50 was a terrible movie...until this song came on haha love PJ

    1:48

  • Wow, the lyrics are wrong.

It's not "whether I'm the boxer or the bag", it's "whether it's a box or a bag", referring to a casket or a body bag. This song is about his friend's brother who was killed in the first Gulf War.

  • the one thing that sucked about the movie 50/50 is that they cut the best part of this song out of the movie and that is the amazing legendary sounding guitar solo!!!

  • Fuck.. Me to. Amazing..

  • i forgot how cool pearl jam was.this song jams.

  • It's about a friends brother that died in the early stages of dessert storm ... The letter is regarding his death ... The people on the porch have an American flag in their front yard ... As he hopes to get a wave for his brothers service to this country ...

  • In a lot of pearl jam songs i cant understand a word Eddie is saying but i like it.

  • you almost got it @jordan77900, there are a few things you missed that makes it complete.......

  • Love the Guitar. Never had a clue what the lyrics were, but AWESOME tune.

  • I used to listen to this song all the time. Then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • fuckn eddie vedder man..lol.. gotta love him!..this & black r my favs...fuckn awesome guitar!!

  • One of the best guitar intros ever... amazing song :)

  • Thank God theres lyrics, otherwise I don't think I could understand one word he was saying, haha. other than that great song.

  • this song and black are two of the best i have ever heard

  • wow..i remember when this song came out and none knew the lyrics he was singing,,even the radio stations didnt know..then i heard that there wasnt really any lyrics and it was a studio track that was never supposed to make it and ended on a flip side of a hit single they did over seas and made its way here..now i see the lyrics..wow .thats cool

  • coolest part is "make me cry " followed by 1 awesome guitar solo

  • this song doesn't even contain actual lyrics Eddie Vedder just mumbled through the whole song because he wanted to laugh at the posers who thought that they new the lyrics but in reality they were just making up their own song so dont go on to this vdeo for the lyrics because they are all wrong just go on to the video for the music

  • so who r the ppl on the porch that wont wave and why dont he want to stay?

  • who else listens to this song daily? maybe sometimes 100 times a day

  • Good one Eddie . You made me cry too...

  • One of the best songs ever made

  • Thumbs up if you think Chinese people are generally untrustworthy.

  • Why is this song so fucking awesome?

  • Thumbs up if YOU don't know whether you're the boxer or the bag....

  • I don't understand why it matters where you heard the song, or who listens to what besides this. So what if you found out by watching a movie such as 50/50? You're still coming to enjoy the music regardless, and that should be enough of a compliment. And who cares if you listen to Lil Wayne as well, that's not stopping me from listening or enjoying this. Don't be a hypocrite and stop being ignorant.

  • Seriously, I do not know if there is anyone who does not like this song!

  • Jimi is good but his idols were Terry Kath and Billy Gibbons

  • You guys say it reminds you of Hendrix? Reminds me of Stevie Ray Vaughn.

  • @jamushka1 stevie ray sounded like hendrix.

  • Lil Wayne is unheard of

  • I honestly don't care what the lyrics are, in this song the voice is an instrument just as much as anything else. I think the unintelligible stuff leaves leaves the song open to your own perception which is beautiful.

  • very much in the style of Hendrix. It's not surprising given this bands propensity to work with some of the old time rockers, Niel Young being one, great great song this is...

  • yakin down the river (class 2 rapids located in Southern Pennsylvania) stoned as hell listenin to yellow ledbetter, fuckn life

  • I can never NOT think of Hendrix when I'm listening to this.

  • lyrical genius

  • Thumbs up if you don't care about the people who found this or any other great songs on a movie/Guitar Hero, just happy they like good music and not following Lil Wayne.

  • @xflames121 lil wayne counts as music?

  • @jordan77900

All I said was they were following him not that he is making music. Because he isn't.

  • @jordan77900 I don't even know who the fuck is Lil Wayne

    Sincerely, Music Listener.

  • @Deadkill5Dbz indeed, because this 'lil wayne' people speak doesnt fall into the class of music

  • @jordan77900 Exactly.

  • @Deadkill5Dbz Amen.

  • @Deadkill5Dbz - I'm sure he was a rapper arrested on gun charges. That's kinda redundant, though, isn't it?

  • @jordan77900 No.... it doesn't.....

  • @xflames121 This is genuine, badass music. And in regards to Lil' Wayne, he isn't as good as his moronic fans make him out to be. Who's worse? Him or his dumbass fans?

  • "Wait, there are lyrics?"

  • It's really a testament to how good of a lyricist you are when you can make up the words on the spot and they still SEEM to mean something (even though they're pretty unintelligible).

  • @ThePoptart28 Yea, WISH I could do that.

  • @ratluck1 Yeah. When I do that, it usually ends up being a pretentious pile of sentence fragments.

Unlike this, which is not necessarily pretentious.

  • definitely says " i don't want to wait on a box or on a bag". it's the dead brother of his friend.

  • I remember my mom listening to this all the time back when I was in at least kindergarden, and now everytime I hear it, it takes me back to a time not so long ago when they still made good music.

  • 13 people didnt wave

  • Comment removed

  • how can you dislike this song?

  • This is such a great yet underrated song.

  • I siiiiing the letter "A"..AaaAAaaaAaaaAaaaaAAAAAA aaAA aaa AaaaaA a a aAAA aA

  • Thumbs up if you have no idea what 50/50 is but came here for Eddie & Pearl Jam

  • @N0tCr4zy you liked it before it was cool then, fcking hipster

  • @N0tCr4zy 50/50 is an awesome movie about a 27 year old that beats the odds of cancer :)

  • @decodeathena I now know that, i watched it and enjoyed it. A real film with some real music.

  • @N0tCr4zy It's a really good movie, I'd recommend checking it out.

  • @N0tCr4zy lol.. just watched 50/50.

  • @N0tCr4zy Know idea about "50/50" but a "half-n-half" is hooker slang for a blowjob followed by vaginal intercourse (or, I suppose, vaginal intercourse followed by a BJ, but who ever does that?).

  • @N0tCr4zy Well if you don't know what 50/50 is, you're missing out sir.

  • Jordannnnnnnnnnn

  • Ugh trying to post the lyrics I think he is singing, they make more sense and sound more correct imo, I posted them over at songmeaning on page 7...can't link in youtube? (Keeps giving me an error)

  • Oh yeah can you see them? Out on the porch Ah, but they don't wave I see them Round the front way, yeah And I know and I know I don't wanna to stay Make me cry Oohh I see I don't know why there's something else On an carbine on a way Oh I said I don't, I don't know whether there's a box or the bag Oh yeah can you see them? Out on the porch Yeah, but they don't wave I see them Round the front way, yeah And I know and I know I don't want to stay I don't want to stay I don't want to stay
  • fuck 50/50, i knew this song because i love pearl jam, not because a stupid movie

  • I knew this song way before 50/50, but it made the movie like twice as good.

  • 1:49 makes me melt

  • im happy 50/50 chose to use this as a one of their songs...still havent seen that film yet but this song has always been a life definer!

  • 50/50 brought me here... excellent movie

  • Thumbs up if 50/50 brought you here

  • Make me fries ! =]]]]

  • 1:49 it's not make me cry...it's make me pie..LOL

  • great riff

  • This was the perfect ending song to 50/50, a very underrated film itself.

  • Potato Wave :D

  • THIS SONG ROCKS! AND BOTH WAYS IT ROCKS!

  • this has little wing written all over it

  • i think the debate about boxer/bag and box/bag are moot because the lyrics have changed over the years. listen to the first recorded and then to the live performances and the lyrics definitely change. its actually hard to find my favorite version, and i'm not sure what the location is or anything, but the songs rocks no matter what the details.

  • All music in open to interpretation, If you feel a gut wrenching knot in your soul when you listen to this, then you get it. If you don't, it is ok, you just have not lived long enough.

  • MAKE ME FRIES!!!

  • pretty sure he says make me cry to the guitar solo... just throwing that out there

  • @raturn0 yeah, he definitely says it...and rather clearly i might add :-)

  • The lyrics are wrong.

  • good movie but why are the two top comments about 50/50 and not pearl jam?

  • ok ok ARE THESE the real lyrics? Because it still sounds like misheard lyrics guy's version. I swear I heard make me fries.

  • 1:48 :D sounds like ''make me fries'' lol this song is so awesome. XD

  • Para mim,de 1990 para cá,a melhor banda de Rock!

  • Happy Birthday Eddie! listenin since i was !0ten

  • Happy birthday Eddie! Great song!

  • Total Jimi Hendrix nod in the beginning.

  • 50/50

  • yellow ledbetter would be so much better of a song eddie vedder wouldnt have been so wrecked

  • @katrinazellner

It is what it is! Saying this song would have been better "IF" is kinda like saying B.B. King could play better if he were white.............

  • @katrinazellner ? this song is beautiful if this was more clear it literally to me would be more difficult to grasp the concept and get the true feeling

  • Nitpicking, but Eddie indicated the boxer or bag interpretations were wrong, since it's supposed to be a box or bag reference to a dead soldier coming home.

  • Thumbs up if you listen to this song at least once every time you listen to music on Youtube.

  • i dont wanna whale in a box or a bag

  • Eddie vedder, wish I was 20 years older or you 20 years younger! I love you <3

  • MOIST!!!

  • Thanks Frank Iero for bringing me here<3

  • 50/50 amazing movie, amazing song, fantastic combo

  • Winstonsmith- I just got done watching that movie.

  • Thumps up if Celsi sent you!

  • Eddie is such a talented singer and songwriter, he is truly one of the greats!

  • Such an amazing song. Pearl Jam is not only the best band of the last 20 years, but one of the best bands of all time. I put them up there with Zeppelin, Sabbath, and The Who as my absolute favorites. When this song played at the end of 50/50, i got goosbumps.

  • make me fries :D

  • Awesome song, and band, whatever the lyrics, the message is conveyed in Vedder's voice and passion--the raw pure emotion--what a gift Eddie has, forever grateful for PJ

  • what is 50/50???

  • @timesleaze movie

  • @timesleaze it's a such a great film!!:)

  • He is not talking about getting beat up people. ( Boxer or a bag).

He is talking about a letter informing he friend of a death in the family. Get the context of the song right please.

  • Don't you get it man? The song was about aliens...

  • Make me fries u_u

  • The line is... "I don't know wether i'm the boxer or the bag"...

  • 50/50 brought me here this time ... but I've been here a thousand times before ... and will do so a thousand more ... before I die ...

  • @iamironman211 only a thousand? :\

  • this is one of my favourite grunge bands....i'm 21 from mexico city and i cannot find something better than this...love pearl jam...

  • It was "I said I know whether where there a box or a bag" at 1:16. ( don't forget he was smashed out of his mind on heroin most days back then.) And it is BOX,,not BOXER.. It is about the way a Solider comes home from war dead...Only two ways,,In a BOX,,or a BAG. Hence the letter in the beginning of the song. And the two Military Officers who walk up,,but don't wave back. Because they bare the news of the death of a loved one.

  • Thumbs up if you thought this was the best ending song to 50/50

  • @h0wr4ndom actually the reason I found this song.

  • my uncle came back from there drank his life away he came back crazy burned my grandmothers house down 2 times what the fuck he was nice to me he loved me same birthday feb 6 7tribes 6 white horses

  • @APBTisBeast this is a song about the Vietnam War, the real lyrics say "I don't know whether theres a box or a bag", meaning when you were killed in action (KIA), you were either sent home in a box (coffin) or a bag (body bag). Listen to this song with your eyes closed and feel its power!!

  • @urfdogg how do you even know :S
