His canoe is a chestnut prospector. The most treasured canoe of any Canadian paddler. Bill was a legend and mentor. I Owe all my talent as a freestyle canoeist to Bill and his daughter, Becky. His son Paul taught me incredible technical skills in whitewater. I thank them all so much for opening up the sport so broadly but first Bill with the Waterwalker series.
Bill struggled to make this one and called it the impossible feature. Actually the whole film was made from stock footage from his cutting room floor. Either way it's still amazing.
The music for Waterwalker was done by Bruce Cockburn who was a dear friend of Bill. Bruce is one of the poetic shining lights of Canadian folk, especially political folk.
I have some of Bill Mason's videos but not this one. If you own this video, do you think you could see who did the songs in the soundtrack and what their names are. I really like them.
he was good, just passing on a tradition that was centuries old. HOWEVER, from what I understand, he helped innovate the leaning canoe technique and was laughed at by old timers who thought it was silly. Now it's recognized as a stroke of brilliance.
clearly.......its a hobby for bill....i mean he is extremely passionate about it and probly loves it more than anything but at the end of the day it is for his enjoyment....the native peoples had to canoe to survive
Yup. He was proud to be a Winnipeger, but loved canoeing all across central Canada and up North....wonder what he'd have said about the rise of sea kayakking on the west coast in the 90s...

Is there, or has there ever been, a better paddler than Mason? Perhaps among the native peoples long ago...
