When will the Beeb realise that playlists are (deeply) unpopular with increasing numbers of listeners?
I agree with you, doctormozo, 6Music is far better than Radio 1.
Nevertheless, if 6Music is to offer a credible (daytime) alternative to the other contemporary music stations (eg. Radio 1) which churn out playlisted tracks ad nauseam, then it's a pity that the 6Music daytime presenters are not currently afforded the same freeedom of choice as those on playlist-free BBC Radio 3.
If you think this kind of manipulation of what you listen to on the BBC stinks, check out the Facebook group 'Less playlist - more choice on BBC 6Music!' Its aimed at 6Music but it covers other aspects of playlisted radio. The more support we get the more chance we have of getting the message over to the BBC that people don't like this sort of programming. If you haven't listened to 6Music give it a go. Its a lot better than Radio 1, but it still uses a restrictive daytime playlist right now.
Today's Radio 1 is all about business, not music as an art form. A tragedy. A record's quality is not proportional to its outright popularity. You should indeed mention the backhanders the pluggers hand over to get their crap music played.
At least I grew up at the right time and look back in fondness at John Peel and Steve Lamacq for introducing me to some great music - I feel so sorry for today's discerning youth intelligent enough to see what's rotten to the core about Radio 1.
Radio 1 is a DISGRACE compared to the 1990s. Back then you actually served your public service remit, and catered for all tastes. Now it's chav music and moronic chat for cretins during the day, and "specialist" shows which never stray far from bland, commercial stuff.
John Peel would be disgusted. I always knew you would fail to make any effort to replace him with anyone as open minded and independent of your attempts to control the UK's minds.
What's a playlist other than outright CENSORSHIP, a kind of "state approval" of bland, safe music? I assume money changes hands between the major record companies and the BBC, there can be no other explanation why the BBC promotes such bland dross when there is so much great independent
Zane Lowe and Grimmy - "specialist music shows"??! And here was I thinking they were talentless ****s who value their own fame far above music.
This is a highly sanitized account of what happens and why. In fact, this tells less than half the story. Shame.

This video is really badly produced - the bed music is at virtually the same level as the narrating vocal track.

Playlist? Played-to-death-list is a better name.

Playlist is the death of radio

Looking at that video you can see why they won't get rid of the playlist, it takes their power and self importance away.
