The greatest thing about this performance is that Peter Ustinov actually could sing and here he was singing like a douchebag with no ear at all. And that is not easy to do. You do have to concentrate.
What a way of meeting people and get to see their talent. At first was reluctant being on youtube, but getting to do this has brought me into the houses of some very special people. You are one of them. Life; isn't it wonderful!!! Keep up the good work. Have A Splendid Day!!!!
Can't get much more hilariously and brilliantly camp than this in 1951! It's too bad he didn't do more animated stuff. He was brilliant in Robin Hood. Mother! *Sucks thumb*
Nero was in Antium when the fire started According to Tacitus, upon hearing news of the fire, Nero rushed back to Rome to organize a relief effort, which he paid for from his own funds. After the fire, Nero opened his palaces to provide shelter for the homeless, and arranged for food supplies to be delivered in order to prevent starvation among the survivors.
Here are the lyrics: Oh Oh oh lambent flame oh oh oh force divine oh ominipotous power hail None is the swifter to bring destruction Yet carefree as a child Thou with wild breezes play The old Troy shall be no more because of thee Thou harvester that strips the soil for men to sow new crops Oh Oh oh lambent flame Oh Oh oh force divine Oh ominipotous power hail
What a brilliant performance by the great Ustinov. Unrivalled after almost 60 years. To personate a maniac Nero that way requires intelligence. A play of features in an exemplary manner.
This is one of the most underrated films, in American Film History - I think Ustinov was robbed of an Academy Award, fer this (tho - NOT fer his "singing"!)...
I think I saw part of it on TV once. It was the part where he was talking to a woman and said something about him and her being gods. We thought partsof it were very funny and me and my friends tried to immitate him all evening
I LOVED this scene..even if I thought nero was such an asshole! :) wow.. I haven't seen this in about 20yrs and lord knows I've sung this damned song a couple hundred times in my life :)
@Allocator2008 no it is omnivorous (not omnipotent), it's a joke within the film because earlier when nero is composing this very song petronius corrects nero and says omnipotent not omnivorous, and nero comes back and asks is "nomnipotent is better"
it's so true!! I stumbled onto this film and couldn't get over this scene, the jokes within the film are a riot!!!! Peter Ustinov plays pathetic (amazingly)....
darn! this woman who playes the unfatefull!! wife! of nero she was beautiful! to but allso dangeres!!! looking her looks make's me think of a black panter who is ready 2 strike! eeeeuuuui scarry cat looking eyes! who is she?? i dont know this actres?! does anny one know??:))

In fact, Nero could sing very well, but this film shows us the version of historian Suetonius, which hated Nero and make him a band singer in his histories.
That's one theory. However, what is not a theory is the fact that for an Emperor to tour the Mediterranean basin singing to who would ever listen was most unusual.
German synchro was equal at the VERY least, I`m now pretty sure he did it himself, he could speak German well, in Germany during his lifetime Ustinov was one of the most popular actors and his part as Nero is THE congenial classic
He does look rather omnivorous.

Do you have any information on the piece Nero sing while Rome burns? Was it composed by Rozsa or is it ancient like this one? Thank you very much!

Nero is my favorite vocalist. haha. A bastard, but a good singer...haha

You could put the lyrics in the video description, along with the "Epitaph of Seikilos" musical reference ;)
The more we know, the better!!

The melody is taken from the Epitaph of Seikilos, the oldest piece of sheet music from Ancient Greece. Cool detail.
