There are three genders in Russian: masculine, feminine and neuter.

You can usually determine the gender of a noun by its ending.

The words of feminine gender mostly end with "а (a)" or "я (ya)"

thank you! now i got it. i`m from romania, and here, in rural areas there also is this custom. we have family names such as :stephan`s:. we also have nicknames like that. i have some questions: how official is this "renaming"? I mean if a guy with a family name 'ivanov ' will marry a girl, that girl`s name will be by default ivanova;? on the husband`s official id card, will he be called "ivanov" whereas his wife will be called "ivanova" in her id card?
