the name of the music is canção do mar ( means song of the sea) by the portuguese singer Dulce Pontes. This song is a tribute to the portuguese history, when Portugal rule the world in the 14,15,16 century, when Portugal were tje richest nation in the world, when brave portuguese navigators with his light sailing ships discover the world. Portugal is one of the oldest countries in the world with a fascinate and beautiful history.

Every time I see this opening sequence I get this incredibly visceral and heady feeling, reminding me that the dark side of humanity is ever present.... a very powerful song that captures the vastness and brutality of the LA crime landscape. Great show too by the way.

anyone noticed they have now in the TNT version cut the Richard Ramirez (the only b/w photo - chilling in and of itself and very telling) photo from the opening sequence.

I also dig the music . .that opening flute section is irish/goth/homicidal/Hitchcock all in a few notes...it is what pulled me into the series.

Yeah i must say NBC made a great mistake but then again, they have made many. They screwed up Leno and the law and order's ratings are falling, because there is no storyline to that. Also to add to this, I must say I'm surprised one of the bigger TV stations didn't pick it up like Fox or CBS. Fox has very little drama shows besides 24, but the current season will be its last season so they will need to replace that time slot but did not pick it up. CBS has3 of almost the exact same dramas, CSI.
