Depends where you are. Our family has a piece of property pretty close to Thunder Bay and the grouse won't let you get anywhere near them. They are usually flying by the time you see them so all you can get is wing shots. I guess there a lot of dogs running around there so they cause them to be really spooky

normally I just drive up and shoot them that close out my window with my 10 guage shot gun with a BB magnum goose load while they sit there on the ground or up in trees. the BB mags just mince them and I leave them there, the meat sucks and they are a waste of time. I just like to kill them cuz they are stupid. I do the same thing with rabits. yesterday I shot 6 rabbits and 12 grouse and took out 4 mule deer in a guys field with my 45-70. 1 of them was gut shot really bad and it hobbled away.

@STEELDEEL12 i live in northern Canada i hunt this way many times for years, i say hunting with slingshots is far more fun than easily killing them with a shotgun. You should give it a try. But we mainly walk around and hardly use trucks unless we see them along the main road.

male ruffed grouse can be extremely territorial. they will take on a bulldozer if it gets in their way (actually happens with loggers). shooting one off wing even with a slingshot is inhumane and completely non-sporting. You should be ashamed. Might as well have been shooting a rooster in a barnyard.

I shot a grouse with a shotgun at less than 20 yards in a tree. My dad and I left a pond (We were trying to find ducks).As we head back to the car in a different path I chose, I heard a grouse flu in a tree on my right and killed it in 1 shot (I always never miss) This was the first bird killed with a shotgun.I like the shotgun, But I prefer to use a .22 long rifle for grouse, (I only use a shotgun when I flush birds)o_o
