Stephen was always challenging himself , this song off the CD (album) is off the chart unfortunately live , with a band is one hard mother to pull off well . Sort of like what he did with Blue Bird which just knocks you down as it keeps coming on . Sort of like a good dose of you-know-what. This begins the cross over of rock n roll's influence on country which like America at that time (and now ) needed a face lift , or something badly .
Frickin genius, does anyone know where I can find a clip of Love The One You're With from around this time?, the only ones I can find are all from the 80's and crap!
THIS IS PRICELESS....a great band playing totally live. And if you've never seen Stephen play "Crossroads" by himself on acoustic, you haven't seen anything yet.
Interesting to hear the words and melody for this.I'd only heard the Byrds version (well McGuinn and Hillman were the only Byrds on it but it's on the Notorious bonus tracks) which apparently never recieved vocalo overdubs.Love it,
Stephen looks playing more relaxed than playing in CSNY. He shouldn't have broken up Manassas..but it was different from the "industrial music activity" which the record company needed.
Vis comments about being a part of CSNY or CSN vs, his solo work, =I= say: Listen to his solo work =carefully=. Stills is one the greatest song =and= lyric writers, voices =and= musicians of the 20th century. His body of solo work in the '70s would put to shame that of almost anyone else.
Remember seeing Manassas on the old ABC In Concert tv show. Stills was hammered and the band didn't do very well. This redeems them-I wonder if the In Concer show can be found anywhere?
They are compared quite often by a lot of folks but I can understand where you are coming from.
Seen Stills do FWIW only about 20 times live! A signature song, one that he always does well in its funky version that he went to about 30 odd years ago.
I think it's a Tennessean. The white one is a White Falcon. Verrrry expensive. George Harrison played a Tennessean, Duo-Jet, and Country Gentleman. Greta guitars when Fred Gretsch made them. Now that Fender has the company, they suck canal water.
While I have always admired and enjoyed Stills as a solo musician, the trail from Buffalo Springfield, CS & N, CSN & Y, and Mansssas, have led to believe that he is better as part of a whole than whole alone.
@musiclvr1954 when CSN vocalise and harmonise, it's a little bit of heaven on Earth. All of them are way better than the average troubador when they go their solitary ways to my mind. Steve with a battered old Martin (and a few Tequilas!) is a great solo artist with that emotive and rangeless voice. Add that to a unique guitar style (percussive and melodic)..mesmerising
Ist guitar line - clearly played by the dude who features on Ohio. Classic sound.
Yes, I am glad you suggested I check this out in full. I've stared at the 1st album in stores wondering if it may be a tad too over produced and mediocre lyrically for me to part with money for...but I love Byrds, Burritos, Clark, GP, Doug Sahm, etc and this sound fits so you've convinced me I need to splash out and get it now. Thanks. Pete
Hope you're enjoying it! I missed the Manassas album the first time around, but thanks to XM radio's Deep Tracks, I finally realized I needed it and it's been more or less nonstop in my car stereo since. There are one or two clunkers on it but mostly it's a great album -- a real lost classic of the early '70s. The "new" one, Pieces, is well worth picking up too.
Note the chord flub at 40 seconds in. Then Stills gives Hillman a smile like "Oops, my bad!" Of course, the rest of the song is flawless. This is exactly why I love live music on youtube; it shows the human and the genius of amazing artists.
Always loved that bit myself, then it cuts to Fuzzy with a big grin. This was 'take 2', although I haven't seen the other take I'm guessing they needed to do it again for a reason - lol
"Take the first verse from the first one and the.." *band laughs* lol
Those were the last gasps of Steve Stills, before he drifted into mainstream territory. That said, it always makes me kind of sad to listen to Manassas, even though the music is not bad.
Think the studio allow a small number of the tracks on here for a short time to attact more buyers.. even though they still haven't released it in multi-regional format!
Stills has had his ups and downs over the years (as we all have) but I have been so pleased with his recent shows. Great to hear how good he was and looking forward to seeing him again in the states (saw him 3 times in the last year). I think he really appreciates how his true fans have responded recently. He is much stronger than during the CSNY 2006 tour.
Talent? Yes, many of us feel he was arguably the best overall musician from 1966 - 1973 and beyond in RnR. Even better than Clapton.
How can you compare them. Stills is an icon. Talent does what it can, genius does what it must. Stills falls in the genius category. Seen him do "For What its Worth" solo?
Most of you might not know - they did another take of this song and that is what Mr. Stills refers to when he says "take the first verse from the first one....." at the end of the video. The first take, which is not on the Musikladen DVD, was posted here at one time (I did not know this until after it was pulled) but would sure like to see this here again!....
Always wanted to see the other take..Can't find it anywhere!
Saw Stills on Thursday.. Any doubt we had was quickly quashed! He was FANTASTIC. He looked, sang and played great! Although he had hurt his finger before the show - I've never seen him use a plectrum so much.
Band all sounded and looked great (except Joe Vitale who made no effort with his wardrobe! lol)
Hey Ronnie, This is taken from The Best of MusikLaden Stephen Stills and Manassas DVD. You could pick it up quite easily in the US. I had to import it and even then it won't play on my damn DVD players as it's Region 1 and I'm in a Region 2 country. Must'nt grumble tho as it's well worth owning.
Hey Jasmine, I'm just waiting for the dust to settle before I upload those again. I'm also gonna make another account for those as I don't fancy having this account closed down.
I'll be sure and let you know what they are back up.
I had to import the DVD from the USA as they haven't even bothered releasing it on European dvd format! Had a right pain the ass trying to rip it..as it was the only way I could enjoy this more than once since I can't get hold of a multi-regional DVD player!
I've gotta pull my old Manassas album out now. Stephen was actually at his peak during this period in my opinion. I'm addicted to you channel now misspopanoche :o) -Ron
I'm just about to upload a couple of others from the set - Rock & Roll Crazies/Cuban Bluegrass.. I won't bother with the ones people have already posted as I don't wanna be stepping on others youtube-toes.
