@hebrewgod Spawn is BLACK and he is one of my favorite heroes however the guy who made this vid has a point about most black super heroes not having real superpowers(at least one I mean there are only a few black heroes that do and they came wayyyy later and then they gave all the upgraded powers to everybody else including aliens)!
I feel where you're coming from. You grew up in an era when black superheroes didn't get a lot of respect. Your video based on superheroes in your childhood makes sense.
Not to mention that Apocalypse (allegedly the most powerful mutant) was an ancient egyptian/nigerian whom we all know beyond a reasonable doubt were black people, he is never regarded as a black man. Even as a villan (albeit powerful) Marvel Comics refuse to adknowlege this blackness. Why ? Remember : if one can no longer use racism as an excuse for failure then one should also fail to excuse racism PERIOD. But.... I digress.
You are definately right. If marvel was keen enough to make magneto malcom x to xaviers MLK they should have known that Africa has the greatest degree of genetic diversity on the planet & there are more black people on earth than white, so the majority of mutants would be black or asian as 1 in 4 earthlings is an Asian of some sort. Africa having the greatest degree of divergent or genetic variance would be MOST likely be cradle of not only human kind but mutant kind as well.
I understand what he is trying to say. While Cage and T'Challa are important now, they were not as respected or powerful in the 70's and Cage only became a lil more powerful than Spidey in the 90's run after a power boost.
Yo JC I loved this vid I hope you don't mind but I'm reposting it on my fb and everywhere else! When I was a kid I grew up reading comic books & my Uncle had all these! I'm a little younger (31) and this was Hilarious. I just had to repost though because I recently had a huge argument about discrimination. How it doesn't have to be overt & full of epiteths in order for it to be there. We are tacitly conditioned to believe certain things about people of color & it's just wrong. Thanx 5stars
I agree JC, it's too bad there are barely any good black superheroes to look up to, though it has gotten a little better since those days. I gotta disagee on Black Panther though, he's awesome. The guy has smarts, can fight, and is royalty.
I have to go back and read some of my earlier Black Panters. Just keep in mind that I'm talking about the 70s and early 80s for the most part. I seem to remember Jack Kirby doing a few that I thought were really odd. I like what they've done with both him and Cage in recent years. Thanks for posting!
great vid. i will disagree on luke cage, his "powers" were pretty cool. also he fought spiderman (marvels flagship character) to a draw, so he got some respect.
but you left out one of the lamest. brother voodoo!
Yes he was strong, but they all were. I'm talking about "POWERS." Flying, cosmic energy, super speed, eye beams, anything. And don't worry, I have plans for Brother Voodoo!
All of you guys saying "what about Spawn? what about blue marvel?" are completely missing his point. he's talking about the black heroes of his childhood (the 70s), not today in modern comics.
I'm glad you got what I was trying to do. But it's my own fault for not naming it "Confronting the Black Superheroes of my childhood that was basically from 1973-1980 when I was 10-17 years old and Storm and Spawn hadn't been created yet." I'll know better next time.
for the record im a big comic book fan Marvel specifically and i co-sign 100% yeah i could name some ppl you left (ie storm, spawn, etc) but i get your point moreover you really did hit the nail on the head in the end about the jobs they had. good job overall you have yourself a new subscriber
your a dumb ass the black panther was a super heroe of heroe he was a king he keep a whole city safe from the word by hisself, luke cage was the original wolverine his comics sold so good they had to make a white version and in the luke cage comics they promoted diversty ...what your saying is cool and all that but alot of it is not true...i guess you thought us poor niggas didn't read huh brother
this is very true, some black heroes are good and work with what they have of course, but where are the big movies and merchandise with the cartoons, We got Blade(wow) and hancock is new but the overall movie wusnt that good, its good point was the fact that it was will smith and still, where iz the cartoon and coffee mugs???
Black panther was a king and engineer (like Anthony Edward aka Iron Man) with a extreme positive morality sense of justice
Black Thunder had the powers of LIGHTING!!!
Black Racer was like the silver suffer
Nubia was a dimensional wondering woman that had the same powers as wonder woman.
STORM! Enough said. only to name 1%
You're just looking at the whole thing in a negative light because you want to feel victimized. Their is a lot of white superheroes that suck so leave it be.
True but our percentage is MUCH higher so it stands out more. Even if there were 1000 white superheroes and 900 of them suck, you still have 100 cool ones. But if you only had 10 to begin with and 8 of them suck, that's a BIG difference.
I thought he was pretty cool. I read the comics and used to watch it with my kids on Sat morning. Then fact that there were not action figures to buy them is a whole 'nother story.
Hell yeah , that's true ! But Storm held it down on the Female side of things. Hmmmmmm maybe THAT was by design too ! No wonder they got the jobs today!!! Good video Brother

hey,man every time i need a good laugh i watch this.just wondering if you saw handcock i haven't seen it yet but he looks kinda powerful...but he's a drunk.guess we gotta take what we can get huh? oh,by the way aint will smith saved the world like 8 times in all his movies? he needs his own comic!
Pretty funny. And sad at the same time. This type of sh*t is exactly why I decided to make my webseries... The comic and cartoon industry...even videogame industry has a serious problem recognizing people of color even if we do contribute largely to their success.
Good stuff I feel the pain. This is how i felt when I watched blade 3 with the white ppl aka the Nightstalkers (wannabe Buffys) taking over the film. Yeah we had no decent superheros. But marvel did try to make a black team of superheroes, but the comic didnt make it past issue 8 ? why ? It had Warmachine, the truth(the 1st guy 2 have the Captain America serum), and some other random ppl I can't rmbr. But one of my favorites was Battlestar, where is he now but he was the sidekick of USAgent.:(
man this is so funny, sad and true they don't want no powerful black people. but i have to say brothers gettin "bit raidoative spider "we'd step on that thing! " bombed with gamma rays" man was too slow run! and the fantastic 4 they just now letting black people in space! but ironman could have been black, or any x men but no.just a few.funny vid man i have been saying "man the pink panther can throw rocks" all week!
At least you guys get some cool superheroes. try naming two asian superheroes that dont use karate, kung-fu, or some other asian stereotype. I cant even think of one.
I feel your pain. Off the top of my head, I remember a mutant named Sunfire, or something like that. Then there was Coleen Wing who hung out with Misty Knight. HOWEVER, that being said, you've completely taken over TV animation in the last dozen years. I gotta go all the way back to Hammer Man :)
Malcom x man! HAHA! thats great! But I do see your point. There are some good black heroes out there like Bishop, Blade, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Warmachine, Steel, and Storm.
That's actually one of my favorite parts of the cartoon. It was done by a friend of the family. He's 84! I asked him to "try out" and to my surprise he said yes. I'm glad he did. "Chump owed me $6" just wouldn't have been the same without him!
Head to head they didn't let their strongest black hero (Luke Cage) beat Spider Man, or Nighthawk. They even made Nighthawk superstrong. Sam Wilson (the Falcon)was a social worker until the reinvented his past, stuck him in a "pimp suit" and made him a cheap hood, called Snap Wilson. Wazzup with that. Yeah felt jilted definitely. And you brother did make some good points. We didn't know much better back then.
You're definetly right on most of what you said. Cage didn't get called out because he was the exception. He started off as some kind of disco stereotype, but they gradually changed him, and his powers were up there with the best of them. Even his new version comics I grew up with he was kickin the asses of marvel's best. There was also the short lived Milestone trading cards with nothing but powerful black superheroes. But you're talking about the majority, and you're definetly right.
Thanks for writing. I'm 44, so this was waaayyyy before Milestone. Strength and muscles were never an issue. I'm talking about being able to fly without a suit, or shooting beams from your hands or eyes naturally. With the exception of Storm, I can really think of any, can you?
Oh I get what you're sayin. It's like a tokening type of thing. 2nd rate and all that. Hero without the true super. I got ya. Well there was Cloak, but I don't remeber anything special about him except that ridiculously oversized cape. I think he could camaflouge or something. Thanks for making me think!
Great video. Still though, another good black superhero is probably War Machine, aka the second Iron Man. He was around for a good long while, and was even in the big Marvel crossover, the Secret Wars.
I liked it a lot, but your conspiracy conclusion does kinda make me laugh. the idea that dc and marvel met in a smoke filled room to discuss "how we can keep the black children down", heh, heh. more likely it was a bunch of nerdy white writers watching a bunch of epoisodes of shaft and soul train trying to write black characters and didnt know any better.
but it brings new meaning to stan "the man" lee. i mean "the man" is always keeping the black man down.
Hey, good comment. Definitely don't think that there was a closed door meeting, but it's just like when I sit on the train and no one but other Black passengers sit next to me. Was there a memo passed around that morning? No. But there is definitely a collective consciousness that makes folks act the way they do. Not something you'd ever be away of until you experience it. Thanks for writing.
At the time I was reading Captain Marvel went from a Silver and Green suit to that red and blue one. I missed that whole Black Woman era? Same with Storm.
i guess im a little younger. but i did like your video and i do get your point.
but im from prague and theres still never been a hero from eastern europe (lots of villians, tho) so at least you had something. we were commies and radiation powered baddies.
THIS IS SOME SERIOUS SHIT!! This very much articulates what I felt as I read comics as I grew up. I knew I was upset about something, but I couldn't articulated it until I was older. Excellent presentation, Brother.
The worst in my opinion was the White Puma, the only Puerto Rican hero I can recall marvel coming up with. He had a magic necklace that endowed him with some marginally enhanced physical ability. And the choice feature of it was if he removed it he became severely sick. You know, shakes, cold sweats, dizziness. Sound familiar? But I bought the books just like everyone else...
That's a riot! Except I think Black Panther's cool. and boy, are you right about Black Goliath. I bought one issue, and he was humiliated in a fight with the Stilt-Man. No wonder it was cancelled so fast!
All I'm saying is, Luke Cage is stronger than Spider-Man. That's official. And he keeps saving Daredevil and Iron Fist's asses. I mean... that's something...ain't it?
well, i can't say the black superheroes suck, cuz they are actually getting better nowadays. Black goliath sucks of course. He got killed by a Thor clone, made by mr. fantastic, during the Civil War series...
when white/albinic people choose the name of a character thats white/albinic they are not motivated/need to identify the character as white/albinic.
But when white/albinic people choose the name of a character thats black-melinin they are motivated/need to identify the character as black-melinin and they also decide the attributes of the character.
And black-melinin people are excluded by white/albinic people from access/ability to make/design/define characters.
This is like the best thing I have ever seen on youtube. Somebody actually placed my frustrations on film! Great job. I think everybody can appreciate than one. On a side note, I think the first black, jewish, and Italian(ethnically identifiying charecters that is) were in Nick Furies Howling Commandos. Pretty FResh! The Italian dude was based on Dean Martin lol.
Yes! This was great, you just got yourself another subscriber. Rant vids normally have me turn them off after a minute or so, but this had me in stitches till the end ;-)
Funney... up to the point when you had to make it all about how it's aplan to keep the black man down. Jesus, go write your own commic abuot a black due with powers. Or read soething that isn't DC or Marvel, i'm sure you'll find there more black superheroes out there.

Very funny, very hilarious cartoon that made my eyes water from laughing. I'm glad to see that a number of black heroes are breaking out of their stereo-typical roles and gaining prominence. Take Luke Cage for example becoming the leader of the New Avengers, a team that includes heavy hitters such as Spiderman, Wolverine, and Dr. Strange.
Cage wasn't the only Marvel hero who went to jail, by the way. The Punisher also went to jail, and he was a white guy. I should also point out that while the more racially-themed characters' comics languished in the comic shops, black and Hispanic kids bought a lot of Punisher comics back in the day. Give a black superhero a more mainstream appeal the way Marvel did with the Punisher, and we white people would buy his comics too.
Eh, well, Superman shouldn't be the superhero measuring stick in my book, he's too powerful to root for and too dumb and jerkish to like. I'd go for pretty much any big-name Marvel hero, or maybe Batman, though jailbirds are way more interesting than billionaires-by-inheritance.
There are Black villains of that day who were more deserving of your wrath, many of them in Luke Cage's rogues' gallery: Shades and Commanche, Cockroach Hamilton, MR. FISH!
Kurt Busiek's Astro City is indeed great stuff, and Jack-in-the-Box II is a wondeful Black superhero. So he looks like a clown! That's his hero shtick, like Peter Parker and spiders.
Oh yeah, now it's MUCH better. On TV you had Static, although I could never buy my kids a Static action figure! Every other character on the Kids WB had an action figure! And I love Cyborg from the Teen Titans. And Vixen from the Justice League cartoon. In comics there is Storm and TODAY'S Black Panther, Black Goliath just got killed so he's out, Luke Cage... Plus independents like Blackjack, Brotherman, Witch Doctor... check out the Museum of Black Superheroes website for more.
The lack of merchandise is precisely why Static Shock! ended after only four seasons. Animation costs more to make than mere advertising revenues (or, rather, the production company’s share thereof) can recoup, even for higly-rated kids’ animated series. They count on merchandising to make up for it.
And Static Shock! won in the ratings BIG time — RERUNS of S.S.! would often beat NEW EPISODES of Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, considered the ratings powerhouses of the time.
And there is the great tragedy. No one would make merchandise. And without merchandise, kids' animated series cannot afford their production costs, no matter how good their ratings. The producers had to cancel the series because they couldn't afford to keep making it. The network wanted more, but there was just not enough money.
DC wouldn't even commission a Static DC Direct figure, but Beppo the Super-Monkey got one!
You do know that Static was a comic book character long before he was an animated cartoon character, right? The whole line of Milestone Media comics were awesome! And, by the way, I'm a middle-aged Southern white dude.
Went looking for a good black role model in comics for a kid a while ago - all the black characters were either in adult comics where the black guys do a lot of drugs and are criminals, or comics where the character rides a skateboard. It's like most comic writers have only seen black people on TV.
...And I love how everybody brings up Storm. A hundred X-Men from around the world, about there's one black girl on the team, amongst white people from every part of the globe.
Same here. Like x men is called "storm", white folks that are in denial always say storm and know damn well if all the chars from x men died except storm, the whole freakin franchise would be ruined.
Yeah, the one white hero even lamer than most black heroes wore orange and green. He was LITERALLY a joke before he was revamped by Peter David. I mean LITERALLY, as in he was the punch line to a Saturday Night Live skit: "Aquaman, you go talk to FISH! BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!"
There's Gabe from Sgt. Fury & His Howling Commandos who was the only other black person along with the heroes you mentioned, plus Storm that were the only black heroes at the time I was reading comics!
so you're saying there are no dark skined or "black" people in Egypt? thats an ethnicity not a race, A lot o jews are white, but go on about jew this and jew that, big difference between ethnicity and Race
Let's see: Black Panther's married to Storm, Luke Cage is leader of the New Avengers after Civil War, Black Lightning is in the JLA, Black Goliath is dead and Falcon is Lord knows where.
Yeah, that's now. But what were they doing when I was 12? I still remembering buying 5 copies of Black Goliath #1 when it came out. I think they're probably worth less now than the $1.25 I paid way back when. Thanks for writing!
Black Goliath clicked dislike 11 times.

This was so funny and ture. Falcon sucked.
Luke Cage was kind of sterotypcally. And the cut in their shirts were kind of "Girl wearin' a skirt as a shirt."

JCmamasboyz 3 years ago
Malcom x man! HAHA! thats great! But I do see your point. There are some good black heroes out there like Bishop, Blade, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Warmachine, Steel, and Storm.
someUtubeguy 3 years ago
True, but they weren't around when I was 12. I would have killed for a Static Shock cartoon!!!

The voice for Luke Cage trips me out. " Once I got my money, I was kool and the gang"!
mazaradiflash 4 years ago

But you're talking about the majority, and you're definetly right.
manabower 4 years ago
Thanks for writing. I'm 44, so this was waaayyyy before Milestone. Strength and muscles were never an issue. I'm talking about being able to fly without a suit, or shooting beams from your hands or eyes naturally. With the exception of Storm, I can really think of any, can you?

Oh I get what you're sayin. It's like a tokening type of thing. 2nd rate and all that. Hero without the true super. I got ya. Great video. Still though, another good black superhero is probably War Machine, aka the second Iron Man. He was around for a good long while, and was even in the big Marvel crossover, the Secret Wars.

The John Stewart Green Lantern is cool and Cyborg also. The rest of DC's black characters are lame.

I liked it a lot, but your conspiracy conclusion does kinda make me laugh. the idea that dc and marvel met in a smoke filled room to discuss "how we can keep the black children down", heh, heh. more likely it was a bunch of nerdy white writers watching a bunch of epoisodes of shaft and soul train trying to write black characters and didnt know any better.
but it brings new meaning to stan "the man" lee. i mean "the man" is always keeping the black man down.
good video
smithryansmith 4 years ago 2
Hey, good comment. Definitely don't think that there was a closed door meeting, but it's just like when I sit on the train and no one but other Black passengers sit next to me. Was there a memo passed around that morning? No. But there is definitely a collective consciousness that makes folks act the way they do. Not something you'd ever be away of until you experience it. Thanks for writing.

But I bought the books just like everyone else...

when white/albinic people choose the name of a character thats white/albinic they are not motivated/need to identify the character as white/albinic.
But when white/albinic people choose the name of a character thats black-melinin they are motivated/need to identify the character as black-melinin and they also decide the attributes of the character.
And black-melinin people are excluded by white/albinic people from access/ability to make/design/define characters.

FISH!

At least Black kids a few years ago got a few years of a truly good Black superhero role model: Static!
COMALiteJ 5 years ago
Oh yeah, now it's MUCH better. On TV you had Static, although I could never buy my kids a Static action figure! Every other character on the Kids WB had an action figure! And I love Cyborg from the Teen Titans. And Vixen from the Justice League cartoon. In comics there is Storm and TODAY'S Black Panther, Black Goliath just got killed so he's out, Luke Cage... Plus independents like Blackjack, Brotherman, Witch Doctor... check out the Museum of Black Superheroes website for more.
JCmamasboyz 5 years ago
The lack of merchandise is precisely why Static Shock! ended after only four seasons. Animation costs more to make than mere advertising revenues (or, rather, the production company’s share thereof) can recoup, even for higly-rated kids’ animated series. They count on merchandising to make up for it.
And Static Shock! won in the ratings BIG time — RERUNS of S.S.! would often beat NEW EPISODES of Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!, considered the ratings powerhouses of the time.
COMALiteJ 5 years ago
And there is the great tragedy. No one would make merchandise. And without merchandise, kids' animated series cannot afford their production costs, no matter how good their ratings. The producers had to cancel the series because they couldn't afford to keep making it. The network wanted more, but there was just not enough money.
DC wouldn't even commission a Static DC Direct figure, but Beppo the Super-Monkey got one!
COMALiteJ 4 years ago
You do know that Static was a comic book character long before he was an animated cartoon character, right? The whole line of Milestone Media comics were awesome! And, by the way, I'm a middle-aged Southern white dude.

Went looking for a good black role model in comics for a kid a while ago - all the black characters were either in adult comics where the black guys do a lot of drugs and are criminals, or comics where the character rides a skateboard. It's like most comic writers have only seen black people on TV.
...And I love how everybody brings up Storm. A hundred X-Men from around the world, about there's one black girl on the team, amongst white people from every part of the globe.
hankmad 5 years ago
Same here. Like x men is called "storm", white folks that are in denial always say storm and know damn well if all the chars from x men died except storm, the whole freakin franchise would be ruined.
