What do you understand as gothic?

I think everyone has a different understanding of this notion. Some people are very precise and maybe too regoristic about the catagorisation. Others expand the term according to their individual understanding.

Are you a gothic purist? I am lost in the terms what is gothic, what is doom and what is symphonic. I like to say I like poetry metal. After all the music speaks to your soul and the soul doesn't mind the terms.
