Sinkholes are just that. Places where the land due to various reasons has sunk underneath the level and created a hole to the surface. Water erosion, gas pockets tons of reasons. If you think these are some form of "god sent punishment" then you've clearly never been to the beach side and played in the sand as a kid. I pity you.
