Bronze, silver or gold, Joannie's spirit shines through her performance, skating from her heart. Beautiful, graceful, exciting to watch. So courageous after everything she went through.
WOW incredibly courageous and inspiring, and she got a bronze out of this, when some people said she wouldn't even skate. WOW. doesn't matter that the medal was a bronze; in my mind, her medal is gold. incredibly determined and as scott hamilton said, a superhuman amount of courage
You are my hero! I'm 46 yrs old. I could never do that in ANY capacity, never mind losing my mom! You get EXTRA points in my "book". , just for competing, never mind WINNING a BRONzE medal in the Olympics!
LOVE the choreography of this program. When I first saw this at Canadian Nationals (on youtube, I'm American) I thought it was the best choreographed of all the frees. I''m so glad she nailed it (except for the flip) here!!! Love her.
A very pretty, inspirational performance! I think that mirai had a better skate (personally) because of the elements and energy, but joannie had a lot of courage to go go out there and I 100% support that! Great job!
Joannie truly earned her medal, all personal stuff aside.
Her only big slip-up was when she stepped out in the long program.
I'm Canadian, and not biased...in my opinion (for what it's worth) she placed in the appropriate spot.
The South Korean and Japanese competitors were more technical, and gave more polished performances.
To hell with all those who claim that Joannie won a medal due to her Mother's passing, and gained favour from sympathy...the footage speaks for itself, right?
@funwill I agree! She EARNED that medal the olde fashioned way...hard work, determination and some help from a another great lady up above! I think if she hadn't stepped out of that triple, she could have very possibly got the silver....I just hope we see her again in '14. :) I'm American but I love Canada too!!!! VIVE North America :)
That was a beautiful performance. She really deserved to win bronze. And so brave to get out onto the ice and skate after losing her mother. She would be so proud of her daughter. Inspirational!
i never got the chance to watch her skate because my power went out just before they showed her live! shes such a fast strong skater and hits nice positions. thats amazing how on earth she managed to skate so well in all the greif of her mothers death, i certainly wouldn't have been able to pull that off if my mother had died just days before! well done :)
What I loved about the Top 6 ladies of that night was that none of them had a flat out fall. Sure there were doubled/singled jumps here and there or the occasional wobbly landings; but everyone stayed on their feet and gave a fantastic performance; unlike the 1992 Olympics were EVERYONE had fallen at least once. Not to knock on Yamaguchi or any of them; it was just rare to see a final group that consistent.
amazing performance, just proud to see what she has done, in spite of everything she was going through...this is the same music that Kristi Yamaguchi used in her 1991 Worlds win.
I have to give credit to this woman. She is a master of the program components. Had she done her planned double axel + double axel sequence, she would have won the silver. Congratulations on the bronze medal! Well deserved!
artistically, this was my favorite 2010 olympic performance in the ladies field...the music, the choreography, the dress, joanie's mature style...it all came together beautifully. Her bronze was well deserved!
@laudese I feel the same, watching Joannie compete here in Vancouver. Joannie worked and worked so hard, and got some worthy senior medals. Then, her mother arriving in Vancouver to give support....her mother collapsed and died. I cannot imagine the loss and pain Joannie felt... But, she went out and skated 2 very good programs, which earned bronze medal. She deserved every point she got from judges. Joannie's mother supported her and loved her. Joannie skated for this love....
She is the best and most complete skater in the circuit today. Competition result/medal doesn't matter. We see what we see. Very ideal technique and artistry. I think all the time and many think Canadian skaters always have the best artistry, presence, positions, expression, choreography - very unique and dance-theatre-like. it's so true, just watch the Canadian skaters.

It is nice to watch it without the intrusive commentary. I still would like to see less repetition of spin positions, something not unique to Joannie (nor to her fault -- skaters are doing what the point system rewards). But the same sit-spin position done over and over loses its effect. How about a nice layback?
@Dylvente The skaters at this level will always do what earns them the most points. The ISU recently changed that rule, so from this season you can only repeat a difficult variation of a basic spin position only once per program. Which is imo a good rule.
Let me just say that who ever thinks this was a "pity" medal, is seriously inept. If this was a "pity" medal, than why was she ranked second in the world before the olympics? The 2009 worlds would have played out exactly like the olympics (Kim yu-na gold, mao asada silver, joannie rochette bronze) had Mao asada not fallen during the worlds. Instead Kim took gold, joannie silver, miki bronze and mao 4th. :)
It was an amazing performance!!! I think it would have been better if peoples heads weren't in the way but that's unfixable. It's too bad she fell though. It must have been hard with her mother passing away. I love her, she's had better performances but this was fine.
This was an amazing performance, no matter what way you wanna cut it. Even if it was a medal "won out of pity" as egodiegoego put it, I'd like to see someone else pull out of that sort of mental devastation and deliver the best that they can give. Not many can do it.
Her ice coverage and speed was unmatched.... with the exception of Kim Yu-na of course. I also much perfer her solid jumping technique rather than pre-rotation or flutzing. I'm sure she's even more exciting to watch live!
