Mr Smeathers was my first grading examiner back in the day. This is an awesome display of power and technique though some things have "changed" since back in the day...
when i go for pre blackbelt training sessions alot of people in there patterns obviously been shown poorley how to do there patterns .Ive seen 2nd and 3rd dans peform even chon ji and other patterns and made them look terrible the guy who teaches me constanly says how bad the patterns are peformed by most people. He isnt arrogant he just knows his stuff he was basicly one of paul donnelys top student and also learnt under C. K choi he is 7th dan this is how he was shown it too thumbs up from me.
I loved this video. A form performed the way ut was intended to be done. The sine wave theory is nothing more than a false idea of how to make power. I have never seen another MA use or employ the theory before and it has no place in performing forms. And to those who feel it does, well great for you. But ask urself this, have u seen a tkdist use it in sparring or in combat? NO! This form is great and perform very well.
Very nice form. Yes indeed, this is the original way Eui Am was and should still be performed (in my opinion). It is also the most difficult form I've had to learn. The spinning hook kicks are almost impossible (at least for me), however this martial artist was awesome.
I agree. After 37 years of TKD training and teaching I can say that power does not come from the sine wave concept but from hip motion, centering of weight, focus, proper transitions and focus of power.
what planet is shoeytkd on,this guy is a 7th dan and fantantic martial artist and is up there with the best of them, and this sine wave shit is a load of bol**cks how does a mathematical equation got to do with tkd, connetics yes sine wave dont think so....
First off tkdgaz, if you are a student of Taekwondo, you would know that taekwondo is the most scientifically proven martial art! That's great that this guy is a 7th Dan, all due respect to him, but he is not practising the art properly - General Choi Hong Hi, the founder of Taekwondo in 1955, explained that "mathematically, the maximum kinetic energy or force is obtained from maximum body weight and speed and it is all important that the body weight be increased during the execution of a blow"
I would also like to point out here that tkdgaz does not even know how to spell the word kinetics properly (connetics?!)
At this point, it is also explained that "the way to increase the body weight is the utilisation of a springing action of the knee joint" in which "is achieved by slightly raising the hip at the beginning of a motion, or each technique, and lowering the hip at the moment of impact to drop the body weight into the motion, and effectively creating a sine wave action."
Scientifically proven is a term too often banded around with martial arts especially TKD or Choi Kwang Do. The basic principles of TKD are what I learnt at 14 in physics GCSE - hardly in lofty university labs. if you can cite one paper in a peer-reviewed scientific journal with support for any of the claims you have read then fair play until then be open-minded and do listen to what we are saying ie senior grades. Ray Smeathers learnt TKD as taught to us by Rhee Ki Ha which was ALL hip-twist

Great enthusiasm - but, he is not using a sine wave technique between movement as you should! The twisting kick is supposed to be low section, the side piercing kick and the reverse turning kicks are supposed to be middle section, not high. And his stances are far to long and wide. There are a number of technical points where this 2nd dan can improve on, I myself had a couple of these mistakes, mainly the stances, but I have now corrected this error! Good effort though

I would like the usernames mentioned to post a video of themselves doing this pattern, and show us how brilliant they are. They certainly have the mouth of a pro, lets see a little more action please.
Well i suppose my comment cant really count, seeing as im only a red belt , but my instructor has shown me this pattern before, for the fun of it, and I can tell by myself that the stances aren't very good.

This is a true statement. Power is generated by hip movement and proper placement of energy. Old school is the only school.

not very impressed with the level of the pattern, but im in love with his twisting kicks!

I totaly agree, i study with TAGB myself, though obviously if it makes people feel better, then go for it.
just remember its spelt 'sin wave' after the mathematical function :P

@jaydean1988
i know you commented 2 years. dnt even know if you still train
but it is spelt sine wave, as in the scientific principal of.
thanks
the maths principla of sin would have no effect of wave motion

@jaydean1988 Actually "sine wave" is also a correct scientific spelling.

This is an awesome form. To those people who say there are technical errors and flaws, this is the way it was done before the sine wave came along.

Actually, tkd is not the most efficient martial art. Running is XD
