I'm sorry but I dont like it.The reason? Its because well Hey Mikey was made first, and this song is a huge rude copy of hey mickey thats why I dont like it.But good show mate.....By the way Hey Kitty?Really it sounds much like Mikey so I'm just gonna put thumbs down for this add me!!!!!!!!!!Please...
@artemis2470 - Ummmm...I hate to burst your bubble, but you need to think of a different reason why you don't like this. Why? Because this was the FIRST version. As you put it, Hey Mikey was actually the huge rude copy of Hey Kitty. But that's ok with me. I like both versions.
I wish I'd known about this original years ago!! I like the rhythmic whispering of Kitty's name starting at 2:22. It's not in Toni Basil's version and puts a nice twist into the song. I like this version better because it's raw and unpolished. That's how guys are when we're caught up in emotion over a girl. This version is real......Somehow I always knew this didn't make much sense from a girl's perspective. Mickey you're so pretty??? And how many girls have to beg a guy to bring her home??
Today I read about this song being the original song that Toni Basil covered with Mickey. I wanted to hear it, and I found it here. Thanks for posting! Good song!
Glad I found this! Vocals are great. Interesting to see how Toni Basil's version is really very faithful to this in terms of arrangement, vocal styling, etc, despite the point-of-view shift. Of course, she added the wonderful cheerleader chant. Did Racey ever do a video for this? I'd love to see it.
Smash and Grab was the first album I ever bought. I hate 'Hey Mickey' as it was so over-hyped and numb-nuts actually believe it was the original version.
A pity that this version is overlooked, it's one of the few Chinn/Chapman compositions that the Americans recognise outside "Ballroom Blitz" and "Stumblin' In".
@kookooboy Well millions of people thought he could - "Some Girls", "Boy Oh Boy", and "Lay Your Love On Me" were top 5 hits the world over, the first and last topping the charts in Australia.
@kookooboy ....So now I will say what I think I don't like Toni Basil's version and this dude can sing in fact he is my favourite singer ever...!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finding the original version of this song totally makes up for having my GF forcing me to watch bring it on... i searched for the song and discovered that toni basils was a remake... and this is just friggin' awesome! i agree that toni's may appeal to a broader auddience but this version is now my favorite!
Some remakes just sound better no matter what. The original writer may have a great idea, but the way someone else hears it (and subsequently rearranges it) may just appeal to more people at large. Nothing wrong with that.
a friend said this, and i think theres some truth to this, that the version which we hear first will always sound the best.. regardless of whether is the original or remake, and for me 'mickey' is slightly better..
It happens all the time. You tend to think that the popular version of a song is the original, but actually, it rarely works that way. Examples: Roberta Flack's "Killing ME Softly" was originally a folk song by Lori Lieberman, and Peggy March's "I Will Follow Him" was originally a French Instrumental called "Chariot" by Franck Pourcel. Also, "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers was originally by Les Baxter and His Orchestra.
Not only did Racey record this before Toni Basil did as "Mickey" (a tribute to her youthful crush on Monkee Mickey Dolenz, by the way, as Basil choreographed and did a cameo in The Monkees' film "Head"), but Basil herself first recorded her cover in 1979, three years before it became a hit.
didn't even know this is the original..guess Basil's Mickey was to much of an impression to me. Even a cover version, Mickey is awesome. The original doesn't fall much behind! Cool.
I'm surprised that nobody has commented on the original versh of this classic song. This is my favourite Racey song - never fails to get me going on the dancefloor. Pity the clubs don't play this version more enough.
This is one "complete" video. =p

79 was much more 80's than 70s. Just sayin'.
Thurbane316 2 years ago
'79 makes it 70's rather than 80's, but I'm just being pedantic.
Never heard of this song until Toni Basil's version, so her track did some good.

I agree. Toni Basil's opening cheer on "Mickey" always got on my nerves. This
original doesn't have that, and I think this version, by Racey is much better

They did have some material that was also pretty good as well. It really depends; they were a grab bag. 'Some Girls' is really nice, IMHO.

Racey's other material is on iTunes. They were a retro bubblegum pop band, and their material was generally pretty awful.
This is brilliant, though.

Racey were neither Punk nor New Wave. They were a bad 50s pastiche band who happened to work with a great producer - Mike Chapman.

Well, I don't know what Toni Basil did, but she added something...this original version is kinda weak :/
The Basil version leaps at you, and the cheerleading girls really sell it :)
But, credit where due...it's a cover version, so hats off to Racey :/
