  • One of my favorite pedals. Really great smooth overdrive in first mode. Figured I'd like mode two more, but for the money paid, this is an excellent little pedal.

  • This video went viral on Harare

  • whoa i was just listening to testify!

  • Is the pedal turned ON at the beginning of the video?

  • getting this soon! its a right old one anoll its proper done in but sounds awsome!

  • Got a vintage Japan version for $20 off of Craigslist, and it kicks ass.

I got a steal for $20, but it was badly beaten up...

  • I got the black label japense one off e-bay for that crazy price as well but it had the crap beaten out of it! I have to replace a knob, get a new spring for the on/off pedal part and re-wire a cable :) works perfect now and its a very nice pedal, one of the best sounding Boss pedals ive heard, the vintage ones rule

  • can someone PLEASE explain all these pedal differences, i know the basics, but i cant get the big deal about different pedals like METAL, OVERDRIVE, DISTORTION... all them sound the same? can someone, whos played with all three, explain what is so different about them?? thanks

  • Overdrive is a somewhat mild distortion. It's what you use in blues-rock and the likes.

Distortion is what you use in heavy metal.

  • if you play rock, first you set the distortion from the amp or pedal, and then you engage the overdrive for solos or whatever you want. helps you on sustain and makes the distortion more SWEET AND PUNCHIER.

  • there isn't a difference. all "drive" pedals do the same thing which is to boost the signal and make it "clip" or distort. the only difference between overdrive and distortion is the amount of gain and the different EQ circuits used.

  • there is different types of clipping in overdrive and distortion, so its not the same

  • METAL pedals are usually Extra distorted rather than toned DISTORTION pedals - used for heavy metal and grunge. OVERDRIVE is basically AC/DC, Led Zeppelin etc.

  • Type in worldmusicsupply demo here on youtube, they demo many pedals

OD is not as extreme, sounds like an old tube amp being cranked to 10, check out the bd-2, and od-3 for examples.

Distortion is not supposed to sound like a cranked amp, its supposed to be more harsh and heavy, but it sounds even better into a cranked tube amp. See the DS-1 to hear this sound.

Heavy metal is distortion with mid eq sucked out. See the metalzone for a demo.

Fuzz is worth checking, type in big muff pi.

  • the metal zone is actually not a scooped pedal. Its got a huge mid hump in it that makes it kind of wah-ish (but you can change the frequency of the mids and cut/boost them). Which is why people give it a bad rep. BUT they dont understand its a pedal released in 1991 and the circuit hasnt changed then. Think of what was popular in 1991 and before.

  • @davo171 the old DS 1 doesn't squash the guitar signal but it gets too fuzzy for my style and so like the fool I am , I sold it to some kid who wants to make punk noise.

  • Overdrives are to simulate a cranked tube amp or to push a dist amp further. So, usually the sound is fairly smooth. Distortions are more to simulate a certain type of diode clipping (sharper edged waveforms), which allow for a more dramatic version of an overdrive. Distortions generally are meant to be used in from of clean amps (say if you dont like your dist channel). Metal Pedals usually take distortion further, often spotlighting a specific eq setting (mid scooped, more mid etc)

  • Take the Metal Zone..it came out in 1991 and was geared towards late 80's metal and hard rock. So, they shaped the eq in the pedal to have an inherent mid range boost, which was popular for classic metal (late 70's-late 80's). Now take the Metal Core (came out in '07), it was geared towards modern, down-tuned metal, which is more lows and highs and the mids scooped. It was meant to work with that style. This is why its important to choose what gear is for what, and to buy gear for YOUR style

  • Awsm<33 5/5 star

  • There are 4 different gain settings I could notice...first one goes from 00:00 to 0:32 - the third one starts at 0:55 and finishes at 1:11. Then the fourth and heavier kicks in. So I was wondering, how did you dial to get the second and third ones, considering the first one is all at 12 o'clock.

    Anyway, GREAT sound!

  • bit more gain for the second one about 2 o clock, and i think the gain may be dimed on the third with the turbo off. but i think i may have changed the pickup position too.

  • man you can really play...nice!!!

  • i have one, i only wish it would have more volume, otherwise its a great sounding pedal

  • i agree, i wonder if there is a mod you can do?

  • sounds great!
