Elliott Smith and Sam Coomes have an amazing chemistry. If haven't checked out Quasi, then I recommend doing so. I think Elliott actually produced one of their albums.
I love Elliott Smith, but I'm not sure why everyone is saying this a great performance. The lead guitarist screws up at :33 and Elliott isn't hitting the notes.
I dunno about that, it kinda sounds like he (lead guitar, not Elliott) muted the wrong string on accident but overall i thought it was a pretty outstanding performance.
Plus whenever and artist / group fucks up live and recovers. I believe if anything that adds to their greatness... Thats when you know its real music.
My favorite musician ever. Look at that shot of the twin towers at the end. So sadly ironic that Elliott and the towers - both of which were graced with a stunning, unique, and irreplaceable beauty - are gone forever.
@mussman717word: the Beatles definitely had a big influence on his songwriting, like so many other great musicians. Elliott had such a great ear for melody

@JULIAtalk Agree with you. How could he tone-deaf and be a guitarist and songwriter? His stuff is raw & honest. Technically, his singing is wrong with bad tone, scratchy, breathy and sometimes flat. But if you're too busy comparing him to Pavarotti, you just don't get it. Or maybe the studio should just "auto-tune" him and get it over with? Would that girl like that? Probably needs a good drum loop as well & a guest solo from Eddie Van Halen?

@senordroolcup1 - so we're in agreement, perfect. Thanks for the apologetic response (even if you then told me to 'calm down', which is a perfect way to guarantee that I won't). :)
@senordroolcup1 - also... if his own band affects his 'vocal element' then maybe you should reevaluate your definition of "good". and maybe he should have stuck to studio performance.
@jennymmmm Wow, no need to get so worked up; I prefaced my observation by making it clear that it was just that. I never claimed to have an "insider's perspective" or know anything about you, I was just trying to have a friendly discussion. Calm down.
@jennymmmm Looking back over my comments, I guess I did come off a little condescending. Sorry about that (although I maintain that taking about 30 seconds to glance through someone's profile before initiating conversation is a far cry from "stalking," but whatever... :P).
@jennymmmm lol. you think you can do better than elliot? go ahead. sell millions of records. and well see if they have a parade for you at your funeral..
@MrEnjoiLife1 - I think elliott smith did himself in because of drugs...
@senordroolcup1 - stalking a strangers favorites on fuken youtube hardly constitutes an insiders perspective on taste, life or anything for that matter. How do you know I don't have those as favorites for other ppl, a project or a comedic bit?? You don't know what I'm 'building' so stop trying to pass judgment on me by my online, youtube profile... which you didn't bother to ask about, just judge and guess.
@link182ava44 listen wacko, dont come at anyone on the net (implying you have any idea about what I've lived through) and judge me. in the simplest of terms- f u
isnt this tour when he found heroin? hedef looks like it here,. poor smith i wish he had all of his characteristics except the manic depression i know it helped write amazing songs but manic depression is damn near impossible to escape. all you utubers helped me find elliott smith and i will admit i barely listened to him in 05 but im a music addict myself and its strange the world you step in, it transforms you, &spits u out a new mind/body/& if your sensitive your soul. RIP SMITH u R amazing
this guy's life was all over the place. as was his music. but he never got the respect he should have. a talent that should been with cobain, hoon, stayley. rip me for the 90s guys, but i first listened to elliott in the 90s in heatmiser. all creative dudes that are now dead. what a sad story.
@jennymmmm While I actually think this is a good performance, having to compete with a full backing band does seem to put Elliott somewhat out of his vocal element; check out some of his solo acoustic performances before passing judgment, although the fact that you register his voice here as "flat" makes me wonder if your ear might be the problem.
@jennymmmm I glanced through your favorites (out of boredom, not creeperness) and noticed you're into a lot of glossy, hyperproduced mainstream pop; without meaning to sound snotty, I think you might have become so accustomed to autotune and its ilk that a voice as genuine and endearingly unadorned as Elliott's sounds alien.
P.S. "he sings from his throat"? Uh, where else does one sing from?
@senordroolcup1 the most correct way to sing (unless in head voice or falsetto) is from your chest. That's why Elliotts voice sounded strained at points. But I totally agree with the rest of your comments. Elliott always has and always will be one of my favourite singers and songwriters.
@jennymmmm that's great but this comment proves my last one, obviously you've made a snap judgement in seeing this and never bothered to listen to anything else of his or you'd have known he's been dead for 8yrs.
what??? really!?! are you effin kidding me??? his voice is flat, he sings from his throat and can't you tell that he's tone deaf!? jebus, I could do better and I know I can't sing... especially on Letterman. He should have lip-synched. F
@jennymmmm WOW--if you can do better than go ahead--let's see it! seeing just this one performance you've decided he 'sings from his throat' and is 'tone deaf?? i've seen dozens of his performances and listened to countless songs by him and he is NOT tone deaf and even if he did sing from his throat who cares cuz it sounds amazing...can't believe i'm even taking the time to respond...oh, and REAL musicians don't lip sync and i'm sorry you listen to those that do...so sad
@deathdayparty2 wtf are you talking about, I listen to lip syncers??? when the fuk did that come up?? sorry you spent the last 6 months on this video trying to find someone to listen to you. Im getting tired of having to delete all your spam messages about this stupid fuking terrible performance. so kindly stop.
You do not know what tone-deaf is. If you had, you wouldn't have used that term here, at all. A misapplication of a term doesn't change the nature and the beauty of something. But it does reveal one's piteous mindlessness.
There's a distinct difference between human voice and computer voice; you seem used to the latter. That is why you said "flat voice". Dynamic vocals in pop songs are auto-tuned and very rare in live reality, except for great opera or musical singers.
I'd like to see Eric Clapton try to play Rachmaninoff (search Elliott Smith Rachmaninoff). This guy was an artist, and I think his troubled life affected his subject matter but he would have been a genius even if he were a happy happy kid growing up.
Love it. What a song-writer! People tell me that his music "lacks balls" but i think he's one of the ballsiest performers I've ever seen. Playing music publically that's this personal, and about such sensitive topics is one of the ballsiest things a performer can do. Those that don't think so obviously have never done it!
@dressrehearsalrags you're totally right, his music definitely has 'balls' because he started making music when grunge was every where and no one wanted to listen to a softer sound. but he played the way HE wanted to, not to conform to the mainstream to line his pockets or become famous. So i think going against the grain the way he did definitely takes 'balls'. The only reason he even played at the Oscars was because his record label said if you don't play it then we'll find someone who will!
WHO THE FUCK LET FRANKENSTEIN OUT OF THE CASTLE.
Seriously though, who is that guy? Does anyone know? He seems like he would have good other music.

@JULIAtalk haha any1 who says he's tonedeaf is probably tonedeaf themself
kingdavidjapan 1 year ago
@JULIAtalk Agree with you. How could he tone-deaf and be a guitarist and songwriter? His stuff is raw & honest. Technically, his singing is wrong with bad tone, scratchy, breathy and sometimes flat. But if you're too busy comparing him to Pavarotti, you just don't get it. Or maybe the studio should just "auto-tune" him and get it over with? Would that girl like that? Probably needs a good drum loop as well & a guest solo from Eddie Van Halen?

@JULIAtalk Who the hell would call Elliott tone deaf? They obviously never heard his melodies.

I think this is a fine live version. Rougher than the studio version, but that's what one would expect
darrynray 1 year ago
To me, Elliot Smith with a backing band really sounds like Brian Eno with his old band The Grays.

@senordroolcup1 - so we're in agreement, perfect. Thanks for the apologetic response (even if you then told me to 'calm down', which is a perfect way to guarantee that I won't). :)

@jonyboulder2 really jony? but the guy that calls all women lesbians and tells them to 'die' and 'hope they get raped' isn't?? give me a break.
jennymmmm 1 year ago
@senordroolcup1 - also... if his own band affects his 'vocal element' then maybe you should reevaluate your definition of "good". and maybe he should have stuck to studio performance.
jennymmmm 1 year ago
@jennymmmm Wow, no need to get so worked up; I prefaced my observation by making it clear that it was just that. I never claimed to have an "insider's perspective" or know anything about you, I was just trying to have a friendly discussion. Calm down.
senordroolcup1 1 year ago
@jennymmmm Looking back over my comments, I guess I did come off a little condescending. Sorry about that (although I maintain that taking about 30 seconds to glance through someone's profile before initiating conversation is a far cry from "stalking," but whatever... :P).
senordroolcup1 1 year ago
@senordroolcup1 - one sings from the diaphragm!! Poor singers sing from their throats because they don't know any better.
jennymmmm 1 year ago
@jennymmmm lol. you think you can do better than elliot? go ahead. sell millions of records. and well see if they have a parade for you at your funeral..
IamSmokeyMcPot420 11 months ago 3
@IamSmokeyMcPot420 Record sales mean nothing. ES was a great songwriter, but mass appeal had nothing to do with it.

You don't know what I'm 'building' so stop trying to pass judgment on me by my online, youtube profile... which you didn't bother to ask about, just judge and guess.

isnt this tour when he found heroin? hedef looks like it here,. poor smith i wish he had all of his characteristics except the manic depression i know it helped write amazing songs but manic depression is damn near impossible to escape. all you utubers helped me find elliott smith and i will admit i barely listened to him in 05 but im a music addict myself and its strange the world you step in, it transforms you, &spits u out a new mind/body/& if your sensitive your soul. RIP SMITH u R amazing

@jennymmm you have to be kidding me
You have to be on drugs to think that Elliott smith is bad
MrEnjoiLife1 1 year ago
this guy's life was all over the place. as was his music. but he never got the respect he should have. a talent that should been with cobain, hoon, stayley. rip me for the 90s guys, but i first listened to elliott in the 90s in heatmiser. all creative dudes that are now dead. what a sad story.

so sick of people always comparing musicians.. its music not sports!!

ah fawk, now I read that he's deceased... not meaning to speak ill of the dead... just commenting on his talent.
jennymmmm 1 year ago
@jennymmmm While I actually think this is a good performance, having to compete with a full backing band does seem to put Elliott somewhat out of his vocal element; check out some of his solo acoustic performances before passing judgment, although the fact that you register his voice here as "flat" makes me wonder if your ear might be the problem.
senordroolcup1 1 year ago
@jennymmmm I glanced through your favorites (out of boredom, not creeperness) and noticed you're into a lot of glossy, hyperproduced mainstream pop; without meaning to sound snotty, I think you might have become so accustomed to autotune and its ilk that a voice as genuine and endearingly unadorned as Elliott's sounds alien.
P.S. "he sings from his throat"? Uh, where else does one sing from?
senordroolcup1 1 year ago
@senordroolcup1 the most correct way to sing (unless in head voice or falsetto) is from your chest. That's why Elliotts voice sounded strained at points. But I totally agree with the rest of your comments. Elliott always has and always will be one of my favourite singers and songwriters.
marcreevesmusic 1 year ago
@jennymmmm that's great but this comment proves my last one, obviously you've made a snap judgement in seeing this and never bothered to listen to anything else of his or you'd have known he's been dead for 8yrs.

what??? really!?! are you effin kidding me??? his voice is flat, he sings from his throat and can't you tell that he's tone deaf!? jebus, I could do better and I know I can't sing... especially on Letterman. He should have lip-synched. F
jennymmmm 1 year ago
@jennymmmm WOW--if you can do better than go ahead--let's see it! seeing just this one performance you've decided he 'sings from his throat' and is 'tone deaf?? i've seen dozens of his performances and listened to countless songs by him and he is NOT tone deaf and even if he did sing from his throat who cares cuz it sounds amazing...can't believe i'm even taking the time to respond...oh, and REAL musicians don't lip sync and i'm sorry you listen to those that do...so sad
deathdayparty2 1 year ago
@deathdayparty2 wtf are you talking about, I listen to lip syncers??? when the fuk did that come up?? sorry you spent the last 6 months on this video trying to find someone to listen to you. @jennymmmm
Good luck

I'd like to see Eric Clapton try to play Rachmaninoff (search Elliott Smith Rachmaninoff). This guy was an artist, and I think his troubled life affected his subject matter but he would have been a genius even if he were a happy happy kid growing up.

Love it. What a song-writer! People tell me that his music "lacks balls" but i think he's one of the ballsiest performers I've ever seen. Playing music publically that's this personal, and about such sensitive topics is one of the ballsiest things a performer can do. Those that don't think so obviously have never done it!
dressrehearsalrags 1 year ago
@dressrehearsalrags you're totally right, his music definitely has 'balls' because he started making music when grunge was every where and no one wanted to listen to a softer sound. but he played the way HE wanted to, not to conform to the mainstream to line his pockets or become famous. So i think going against the grain the way he did definitely takes 'balls'. The only reason he even played at the Oscars was because his record label said if you don't play it then we'll find someone who will!
