@iluvpurplestew Moral is defined by the current state of mind of the human civilization, so basically, all or none is a good moral cause for a "crusade"

LoL it's amazing how many people talk of things such as common sense when sense really isn't; just take a look at those who declare it to be. It's as if they thought of the idea themselves. Nowadays Virgo is also desirable sign to be because of dry intellectuality
I think I know why TAA wouldn't feel good if he was at a family reuinion and nobody paid attention to him. I think TAA doesn't want attention because he knows that if people pay attention to him for whatever reason, he wouldn't be able to maintain the energy required to keep that attention. He knows if people were giving attention to him, it would be phony, he would be phony, and eventually get discovered, and thus, the attention would end up being a bad thing because there would be backlash
does everyone becoming ''different'' through the same means constitute difference,or does this false sense of difference contribute to a ''hive mind'' mentality defeating its original meaning. (ie. ''eccentric'' mass-produced modern fashion, music, etc) Do you think to be different you have to not care about trends or things like that, or should you deliberately seek to be different in that shallow way?
Howard how important is it in your opinion to stay plugged in to E news keeping up to date on all of Hollywood's favorite sluts because as you have described we need a fair amount of social interaction and one of my friends says celebrity gossip can be a substitute for friends i am not sure if this can be feasible half of social interaction is your input the other half is your friend or whatever you interact with with your half completely gone how can you live a healthy social life like this?
Howard, you've got me thinking about some recent developments in my life. I've always thought myself to be quite the fool, but at some point not too long ago I noticed that the same qualities I respected and lauded in a select few people were the same ones I hated in myself. Looking back on myself with the same eyes I looked at others, I found something resembling a sense of self worth. I'm still trying to figure out if this is ultimately helping or impeding my development. Any thoughts?
The show Lost. I didnt get, didnt like it. Watched the first season, hated it. This was the only tv series I ever saw which made no sense all the way from the beginning til the end. It had no actual direction, or general outline of what was to happen. All you knew was these guys were plane wrecked and wanted to go home. With scary smoke and polar bears in a jungle. The show was fucktarded. And when every person gave their own version of the ending episode, it proved just how bad it was.
I agree with Howard on almost everything except Michael Jackson. Sure, he was a holyy jolly nice lad. But after painting the guy with a holy brush, like you did, would you leaver your 10yr old with the man? Im not saying he was actually involved with these boys sexually, but just on the basis of thsi subject being raised (more than once) would make me reluctant on this bit of trust.
Then there's the massive Michael J Statue made of himself. Not very humble is it, Howard. I wonder what ...
Howard, what purposes do phenomenon such as homosexuality serve for society as a whole? From what I understand, evolution cancels out most of the things that humans don't use so there must be a purpose. Would you happen to have an explanation for it like you have an explanation for everything?
I'm up for space mining and all, but do you really think it's going to happen? You say make a campaign for it, but with all the problems that we have, will the president, or whoever, actually spend resources on this? This isn't just a present time thing either, because we are always going to have plenty of problems. I guess what I'm wondering is if there's ever going to be a time when someone with the capability decides that we are going to expand in space.
Would an organism begin to subconsciously 'self-destruct' if they have had no interaction with others?
Imagine someone who has been completely removed from the species in a room, others are outside the room and can observe the person inside and give them the necessary resources to survive through a tube connected to their arm, but without the person inside having any knowledge of similar beings helping them. What would happen to this person?
Do you beleive life is likely in the universe? Also do you believe there are other intelligent organisms in the universe who have civilizations that are lesser, greater, or equal to us in technologicol achievment?
Please answer my questions ive bought Genius of the beast (havent started reading it yet though)
What would be the 'best' ( i use the term loosely) type of society for humanity to be productive and progressive socially, geographical and possible biological evolution?
here's a fluff question, What is your favorate story and why? (TV,book, youtube video, video game , anything really)
Regarding the multitasking research report.. I wouldn't put all my trust on a single journalist to interpret scientific reports. Unless that's their field and training. I can quote other reports saying also that "internet users become more efficient at finding information. And players of some video games develop better visual acuity." and also "other researchers were unsure whether the muddied multitaskers were simply prone to distraction and would have had trouble focusing in any era."
This is a great video. But why do we even put a slide on the IQ test every 10 years instead of just leaving it as is so that we don't have a disagreement that we are getting dumber? I mean yeah now I get that insecurity is a good thing, if we knew that we were getting smarter I don't think we would improve. I have to agree you can always improve.
Mr. Bloom, do you believe that Japan would be a good society to live in? A society that puts a person to shame if they do not contribute a great discovery (or at least try to make a great discovery) that will not benefit themselves, only society as a whole. In the United States (the old United States), people lived to enjoy their own lives, not the life of the entire public. That is the type of society that I would like to live in. (out of characters, message me if you have a question).
Howard still never explained the other side of spectrum - those who do not have the desire to fit in or meet another person's approval. TJ simply said something along the lines of, "well, if I was normal, I would enjoy being the center of attention at that reunion."
How can you start on that premise? You're not explaining those who are not in align with the field of science being examined in this video. Not everyone gets a boost from being the center of attention.
not really a question just want to mention something related to the IQ average.
One of the implications of IQs increasing overtime is that some people on death row can escape the death penalty by adjusting their IQs to the new standard which makes them retarded and thus not responsible for their own actions
@1Haze1 I suppose one question would be have either of you heard of a british tv show called QI? Because its probably the most educational yet funny things i have seen on tv
Hmm i have a question for you Mr. Bloom, im just curious what you think of Canadian Politician? like what your Opinion of people like Stephan Harper, or Micheal Ignatieff? and what do you think of pass Prime Ministers like the The Right Honorable Pierre Trudeau? thanks (:
I liked the part about the steady increase of the IQ standard, but it raised a question for me.
I once heard someone say "In our minds, we haven't left the caves." Do you agree with this? Has our species become more intelligent with time, or do we just think that because our technologies have advanced so far that we ourselves have advanced along with them?
f-ck Howard looks creepy in the graphic for this vid. New one for the next show? Great show by the way. Very interesting for the bits I understood, the rest was a little too abstract for me.
Howard, I am curious to see what your opinions are on using ethanol as an alternate energy rather than solar energy. The reason I pose this question is because I feel that since one of the primary components in ethanol is corn it will help boost the economy in the united states, considering that the untied states has some of the most abundant farmland in the world. if you oppose it Is it because ethanol is more of a short term goal i.e. solar energy is better for space use, or some other reason?
I had a thought about the Flinn Effect. Maybe people that take the IQ test tend to be scholarly intellectual types but working class people that never take the test are staying just as dumb as ever.
I've heard people say that all Howard does is regurgitate common sense. Even if that's true, isn't there value in someone who can take in huge amounts of information and repeat them in a way that it's easy for other people to comprehend them? What I know is that, after watching these Howard videos, I think about them for days afterwards. There are new thoughts in my head because of him. So his critics can suck hog wieners. :)
Do you believe it is possible for us to function as a truly egalitarian society? Our inherent xenophobia aside, is it possible for us to break free from the pyramid structure of wealth/work distribution which we currently have, and what would you think would be the best way to achieve this; if you indeed find it would be desirable in the first place? It seems to me that while we have discarded the lord/serf structure, it has been replaced by the manipulative intelligent vs. the gullible stupid.
Howard: Do you ever fear the idea that the group evolution model will be misused by politicians in the same vein as Herbert Spencer and social darwinism?
By the way Howard I feel the people who Chastise you calling you smug and what not fail to see that in every possible answer no matter how simple or complex lies another question.
Howard, the more important question How do we really mine in space? newtons first law shows that using explosives could be catastrophic as A piece of rock could hit the earth and we could have cause a global disaster. What mining techniques could really be relevant in space? One more Question about space. How, even if we put solar panels in space to harvest energy from the sun. what would it be stored in and brought back down to earth with? Some sort of giant battery?
Dear Howard; It seems to me that all the major religions in the world, come from where all the major drugs in the world come from. (i.e. opium Hinduism, marijuana monotheism) since they are accepted and used in India and the middle east or formerly or currently by the religions themselves, why has the western philosophy been so opposed to these substances? Is there a future for mind expanding drugs for recreation or learning?
'Everything in excess is a poison.' Very good quote though I think that everyone has their own limits and some go farther than others and also people have different needs. It would have been great if you went into more depth about that.
lol I remember reading that particular spam that you read first. XD
Howard: Are humans slowly developing a hive mind? I mean, look how powerful a tool the internet is? And It's only going to keep getting better. People are getting smarter and it's happening because we're so connected. How does identity fit into all this? Can identity be maintained in a super hive mind society? And is identity and individualism necessarily that important?
Dear Howard: If the goal of a genetic machine is to replicate and spread life to places that don't support life. Why does life function to bring chaos into order. Also, do you see an end to this phenomenon ever in the future? Also... If life were to spread EVERYWHERE in the universe and it developed a really sophisticated form of long distance communication, would that make the collective universe a living organism of sorts?
Howard, why would the cosmos create predators and prey ? Is it evolution that has led them to see other creatures as nutrition and thus they have evolved such or has the cosmos created an enemy(ies) to work against and create new things. An arms race of sorts.
The first kid is always the bad kid from my experience and from what I've seen. I always thought that the youngest kid gets the most attention not the oldest kid and doesn't the bad kid get the most attention? I guess it depends on the family dynamic and a million other things. I think the theory about the kids was way too simplistic. About the spirituality thing I think in order to talk about it we must define it. If we are talking about awe for this universe then doesn't everyone have it?
You mentioned videogames and you also mentioned control, perhaps the correlation between videogames and why we enjoy them so much is the fact that we have "control" in them.
I get that you go into space, mine some moon dry, bring millions of tons of minerals to earth, and use parashots to drop the ore and stuff to earths surface. My question is how you keep all that stuff together? Chunks of unrefined ore dont really stick together well. How do you drop millions of big rocks to earth and keep them together for a parashot to work?
I'm at 0:32:31 and I'm thinking Howard was lied to by some theist reviewers about what's in Harris and Dawkins books, especially Harris. Harris was very concerned with spirituality. Dawkins had a place for it also. He hasn't read their books.
The generalization that people who see themselves negatively resulting in the pushing themselves to improve themselves further isn't the only way to improve.
Many people who arrogant and over confident push themselves to become better than they already feel they are.
I have question for Mr. Bloom, what is your view on the recent breakthroughs in the creation of artificial life an do you think the creation of artificial life will be beneficial to society?
Forgive me if I've misunderstood this but you've mentioned multitasking and you make it sound as if it has benefits other than the fact that you can do more things at one time. I'm really surious baout this due to the fact that I've recently discovered I'm good at it and am usually doing several things at one at most times during the dat. I apologise if I misunderstood, hope you answer. Thanks.
SPSS is years from practicality, it's an elegant solution but right now, FAIL (NASA,95). Colonization is a great idea, but you've got to solve the radiation problem, not just for people but for electronics as well (SciAm,09); your idea is? Have you read R.W. Bussard's work on space and alt fuels? If we can build the ISS, why not a true spaceship, how's that for a start? Lastly, how would you respond to the suggestion that your glasses are US flag coloured, and so are your ideas?
Howard Bloom, you say WW3 is inevitable, but according to some, such as the book World Changing A Users Guide to the 21st Century, state on state warfare is fast becoming obsolete, and will be replaced by state vs nonstate warfare, and so called open source warfare. What do you think of that?
I would like to add something to the videogame part: Later in the conversation it is brought up that being in control of something is good for us in many ways. I think this is, amongst other things, what makes videogames so interesting for us. We do have the controle over what happends on screen. If we want little Link to swing his sword it will happen.
@snuffsan You know, I've read that in Wikipedia. Yet, there seem to be a lot of pictures of lepers without noses or fingers. Did they just become so useless that it was better to amputate or what? I'm kind of confused about this disease at this point.
@TheAmazingAtheist My guess is because they are more prone to becoming damaged. Seeing as leprosy pretty much kills one's sense of pain and hampers your body's ability to heal itself properly, the loss of fingers, toes and noses is most-likely due to repetitive damage. The pretty much disintegrate.
"Destruction of the nerve endings causes the the affected areas to lose sensation. Occasionally, because of the loss of feeling, the fingers and toes become mutilated and fall off, causing the deformities that are typically associated with the disease.
@TheAmazingAtheist That or the the infected area is just simply viewed as unappealing, of course i have no first hand knowledge on it or the physcological effects.
@TheAmazingAtheist I think it's because (not feeling any pain) the people afflicted with this disease cause regular limb and sensory damage to their body parts, which over time of being diseased and probable nonfunctional decays the connections to these body parts and thus they fall off.
I'm from Pakistan and had some Parsee friends, and they had these old journal entries of people who used to treat leprosy patients, or rather took care of them. Really interesting disease
@TheAmazingAtheist Leprosy itself doesn't cause noses and fingers to fall off. Its a side effect of the numbing from the disease itself and the infections contracting threw the skin lesions that are caused by the disease. They are basically bed sores.
@TheAmazingAtheist If you don't feel pain, you're much more likely to cut yourself and not treat it. Infection comes, and you only notice when it's too late to do anything but amputate. Sound speculation?
@TheAmazingAtheist In Carville, Louisiana, just under an hour's drive from New Orleans, is a leper colony [not sure if it is closed yet] overseen by the Sisters of Charity, and it was there the cure for leprosy was discovered. I think it was called San Gabriel. If you are interested in leprosy, research the Carville colony. I'm not sure, but if the nerve damage is bad enough it might cause gangrene.
What is Howard's stance on mass drivers? Are they a viable way of transporting payloads into and outside of the earth's orbit compared to other cheap alternatives like space elevators?
Considering Howard's opinions on space and colonizing different planets, how would he suggest dealing with other species of intelligent life we come in contact with, such as aliens.
Howard, why, do you think, has the treatment of clinical depression and anxiety disorders by medication still a bad reputation? Scientific studies sugget that it works. Many so-called "rational" people that reject the concept of a god and superstition in general fall back into prejudices and scaremongering when it comes to this particular subject.
Howard, in the Genius of the Beast you talk about Jericho as the first city and that it was established before agriculture. Why would mankind build a city without an agricultural system already in place? What archaeological evidence is there to support that claim? It was the only part in that book that didn't make sense to me. Did I misunderstand the concept? or were u using Jericho as a metaphor.
Bloom lounges on islands of wisdom and continents of facts, but he has a tendency to build phantom bridges and assert that there are connections between completely separate concepts.
Bloom tries to draw connections between totally separate ideas. Like his assertion that negative self image improves cognition, and improved math scores in Japan. Self image has nothing to do with it. They've simply grown up in a culture where from birth they are told that it is their responsibility to excel. In america, kids are told that they have the right to think whatever they want and they only have to study what they want to. He's building bridges where he shouldn't be.
@grimsprice there are studies which suggest neg. self image leads to lower crime rates, but nothing to my knowledge about cognition. Your critique is accurate, there is a difference in teaching styles b/n US and Japan which may account for the effect. Asserting that neg. self image doesn't have pos. effects for society as a whole is innacurate
@xKCBEx Of course i made no such assertion. And that was just one example of the "phantom bridges" Bloom made in his rant. There were plenty of others, such as "Americans lived longer than the soviets because they were a more socially united people. and hence, won." Which is totally bunk. He pumped that sand up our ass's just to try and prove his ultimate point that social interaction is beneficial for you. I don't mind his hypothesis, i just don't like the way he goes about backing it up.
All of these goals seem decades if not centuries away. It seems impossible to get to any of them without some sort of stepping stone. Does Howard have any ideas on what can be done in the near future?
I gotta say. I watched this for 8 minutes and 32 seconds and then looked at the player bar for the progress of the moving picture. And I just cant sit through an hour of this right now. Extrememly interesting, though. I will be sure to keep watching it later.
Great stuff howard. You know your facts and have collected them in a great manner.

Im not saying he was actually involved with these boys sexually, but just on the basis of thsi subject being raised (more than once) would make me reluctant on this bit of trust.
Then there's the massive Michael J Statue made of himself. Not very humble is it, Howard. I wonder what ...

Have I missed the point of the hypothesis?

Regarding the multitasking research report.. I wouldn't put all my trust on a single journalist to interpret scientific reports. Unless that's their field and training. I can quote other reports saying also that "internet users become more efficient at finding information. And players of some video games develop better visual acuity." and also "other researchers were unsure whether the muddied multitaskers were simply prone to distraction and would have had trouble focusing in any era."

Why?

Contrary to folklore, leprosy does not cause body parts to fall off
snuffsan 1 year ago
@snuffsan You know, I've read that in Wikipedia. Yet, there seem to be a lot of pictures of lepers without noses or fingers. Did they just become so useless that it was better to amputate or what? I'm kind of confused about this disease at this point.
TheAmazingAtheist 1 year ago
@TheAmazingAtheist My guess is because they are more prone to becoming damaged. Seeing as leprosy pretty much kills one's sense of pain and hampers your body's ability to heal itself properly, the loss of fingers, toes and noses is most-likely due to repetitive damage. The pretty much disintegrate.
Arcterion 1 year ago
@TheAmazingAtheist On this topic, I saw a page on Answers . com.
"Destruction of the nerve endings causes the the affected areas to lose sensation. Occasionally, because of the loss of feeling, the fingers and toes become mutilated and fall off, causing the deformities that are typically associated with the disease.
Not sure about this, but it's what I saw.
BokuwaFdesu 1 year ago
@TheAmazingAtheist That or the the infected area is just simply viewed as unappealing, of course i have no first hand knowledge on it or the physcological effects.
IAmMike512 1 year ago
@TheAmazingAtheist I think it's because (not feeling any pain) the people afflicted with this disease cause regular limb and sensory damage to their body parts, which over time of being diseased and probable nonfunctional decays the connections to these body parts and thus they fall off.
I'm from Pakistan and had some Parsee friends, and they had these old journal entries of people who used to treat leprosy patients, or rather took care of them. Really interesting disease
taimursheikh 1 year ago
@TheAmazingAtheist Leprosy itself doesn't cause noses and fingers to fall off. Its a side effect of the numbing from the disease itself and the infections contracting threw the skin lesions that are caused by the disease. They are basically bed sores.
ryans32123 1 year ago
@TheAmazingAtheist If you don't feel pain, you're much more likely to cut yourself and not treat it. Infection comes, and you only notice when it's too late to do anything but amputate. Sound speculation?

@TheAmazingAtheist In Carville, Louisiana, just under an hour's drive from New Orleans, is a leper colony [not sure if it is closed yet] overseen by the Sisters of Charity, and it was there the cure for leprosy was discovered.
Katoi5 1 year ago
This is possibly one of the most massive displays of pattern recognition gone mad.
Some times i can't tell exactly what Howard is rambling on about, but i do think i heard the following:
1: Americans lived longer than Soviets because we were a better unified society.
2: America's decline in Math and sciences scores was because schools were not teaching kids information, but self confidence.
3: Leprosy makes people lose their fingers because they run them into the backs of chairs.
lol.

Bloom lounges on islands of wisdom and continents of facts, but he has a tendency to build phantom bridges and assert that there are connections between completely separate concepts.
grimsprice 1 year ago
@grimsprice What you've written really doesn't mean anything. Try harder for clarity next time, and use examples.
petterutiful 1 year ago
@petterutiful
He's building bridges where he shouldn't be.
grimsprice 1 year ago
@grimsprice there are studies which suggest neg. self image leads to lower crime rates, but nothing to my knowledge about cognition. Your critique is accurate, there is a difference in teaching styles b/n US and Japan which may account for the effect. Asserting that neg. self image doesn't have pos. effects for society as a whole is innacurate
xKCBEx 1 year ago
@xKCBEx Of course i made no such assertion. And that was just one example of the "phantom bridges" Bloom made in his rant. There were plenty of others, such as "Americans lived longer than the soviets because they were a more socially united people. and hence, won." Which is totally bunk. He pumped that sand up our ass's just to try and prove his ultimate point that social interaction is beneficial for you. I don't mind his hypothesis, i just don't like the way he goes about backing it up.
