@Barricade360 I don't where she is right now but this past summer she was being put back into running condition in Port Clinton, Pa at the Reading and Northern's headquarters
Watching a Barrett .50 caliber field gun chewing up the boiler on this steam locomotive would be a fun event. Steam, water & fire blowing through ever puncture & pieces fall off & break would be thoroughly amusing.
Thank you for for the very flattering compliment. I sincerely appreciate it.

get it rite N&W 611 was built in 1950. thats like ummmm.......two years later than 1948. hmmmmmmmm. i think I am correct. propoganda is being used heahhh. I am just a country boy. dont know much
if you think thats advanced then search the A1steam trust they built 60163 tornado the worlds first newly built standard gauge steam locomotive since 1960
@whoohaaXL No, the 614 (C&O Class J3a) was always a 4-8-4. It has a similar appearance to Lima built 2-8-4 Berkshires, but it is a larger, more powerful design. The 614 produces a good 1000+ more horsepower than any of the Berkshire types, and has a top speed of 125 mph vs. 80 mph for the Berkshires. It was the pinnacle of passenger steam locomotive design in the U.S.
@Conrail6370 You are correct with the build date of N&W 611. Whether or not it matters that 614 was built by a commercial builder (LIMA) and the 611 by the N&W shops I think the statement that Ross was trying to make (that dmncau got confused with) was that the 614 was the last steam passenger locomotive built by a commercial builder. Yes, a 4-8-4 is a dual service engine although most all were acquired to do passenger work and wound up on freight in their final days of service. Nuff said
614 was not the last steam locomotive built in the usa, it was built by the lima locomotive work!! and they built the last steam locomotive which is a berkshire class locomotive No. 779 in 1949 NOT the 614!!! Ross get your facts straight
@dmncau If you were listening to what Ross said he said it was the last passenger steam locomotive built in America. The NKP 779 was, and is, a freight steam locomotive. FYI: It was the narrator that got it wrong not Ross. If you still doubt what Ross has said do some Internet research. It's all there.
allegheny48, 614 was the last Passenger / Freight steam locomotive built in the US, not the last main line Steam locomotive that was the Norfolk & Western Class J No. 611 built in 1950.
@Conrail6370 Did you once have a video on You Tube of 614 called "The Geese Are Restless"? I have that bookmarked since it was a great video but when I try to access it I get a message that it's private. If it is yours is there any chance of seeing it again? Thanks.
I don't understand why Ross calls the power reverse the johnson bar. I thought that once the locomotive was in forward gear you could go as fast as you want without backing off of the steam.
@Bassfanatic94 The Johnson Bar limits the time (cuts off) how much steam is let into the cylinders. You have to back off on the timing of the steam entering the cylinders as the locomotive accelerates to keep the back pressure in check, or the locomotive will not accelerate any faster. Plus, trying to force more steam than the cylinders can take is very fuel inefficient. That's why steam locomotives become constant HP machines (just like diesel-electrics) above 20 to 30 mph.
I love steam locomotives but could someone please tell me the name of the one at the start to 04:18, sorry I`m usually very smart with trains but I cant find any of my freaking books.
@geordi1231 You must be a very young uneducated white boy ,probably a homo too. When I travel to Canada or Mexico the customs agent will never or have never asked me at the airport & port of entry (Are you an American)..
What they do ask is (Are you a United States Citizen ?) Because they are educated to know America is a continent/ Therefore we say United States ( of America) ..
@Rhino011 you know i remember i read when i was a kid that they wanted a connection between Boston and Buenos Aires and that had to be finished by year 2000
i wish i could own that #614 and run it. Russ Rowland is incredible and very serious about that locomotive. If i was a billionaire, i would buy a big Burlington Route passenger steamer and the ex C&O 614
The 614 was the last commercially built passenger steam locomotive. The 611 was built by the N&W shops in 1950. However, the 611 was built to the 1940 Class J design and is not as advanced as the 614. The C&O 614 has a larger boiler and a better running gear design than the 611. The C&O 614 also produces more HP at high speed than the 611. Ross is very correct in stating the C&O 614 is the most advanced passenger steam locomotive in the world.
Yep, three Garratt locomotives steamed every day in Bulawayo to work the shunt. Dunno what they shunt but they do. But only a couple of fitters left now and the railroad is really on its knees.
125 MPH would be correct. However, finding a railroad in the condition needed to run it safely would be another story, then they'd have to agree to it.. Yes, Amtrak has tracks under wire in the eastern U.S. where 150 is reached, but a lightweight electric exerts far different (and less intense) stresses on the track than a 434-ton steam engine does. So many factors to consider. Railroading isn't quite like getting a license and driving your car wherever you like. Still fun though!
@joshb094 actually LNER A4 pacific #4468 mallard is the fastest steam engine in the world it reached 126.3mph on the 3rd July 1938 descending the stoke bank near Grantham in the UK
@battlegiraf The Union Pacific 844 (steam) regularly does in excess of 80 MPH in the south, occasionally going up to a 100 mph in some stretches. The machine simply looks awesome.
Yea they got lots of moving parts and they are just massive big and powerful, they make lots of noise and they were complex machines, but they ate up lots of resorces to run. still my grandpa engionered them before he died in 1953 even got to drive the train when president ike was campaigning and got to meet him when grandpa appologised for bumping the train and causing esenhour to spill his drink on himself. but its from a bygone era when they represented american know how and better times.
