@Andreilg3 you have no idea what your talking about ! Ean is a elite Dj...this makes perfect sense when you want to move from straight beats to break beats (which his style kinda leans towards). the snares will line up damn near always when the 4/4 kicks wont. when spinning d&b you mix on the snares because your bass drums are never the same !
@modmyego so basically the "elite" dj gives a generalized tutorial on how to beatgrid for breaks and dnb without mentioning anything...this wouldn't work for steady beat in the least, so you obviously must be retarded
@JackDjay that case you might need to look for measure cues .... electro breaks, dub some times use another sample or effect as a snare hit or crash .... tricky as hell to mix but once you learn to look for these little clues it will get easier. hope this helps
Using beatgrids isn't only essential for people that just use sync. It's also essential if you want any time based fx in traktor to sync to the tempo of your song as well.
Quick question! is there a way to have my loops and cue points perfectly on beat when im mixing live? vdj has a smart loop option that makes sure what you press stays on beat automatically even if you miss it slightly, but obviously vdj is shit compared to traktor. i recently switched and this question is killing me, HELP!
thanks for this video , it will help me more. this application is same use of virtual dj.. do u know how to make a personalized beat?? or do u have more beats out there for slow jam or else in hiphop beat?? can u share it to me?? email me at denreyes01@yahoo.com smae add with my facebook.. thanks dj
as much as this video is helpful, and as much as i already knew the basic idea of beatgridding tracks in traktor pro, it seems as though such an extensive process towards this is quite chanllenging to do when playing live. botom line for me is, ive got way too many tracks that do not have an accurate beatgrid when i load them in through traktor...is there any quick way to beatgrid tracks or ensure that beatgrids will match most tracks while playing live?
Eventhough i thought it was somewhat selfexplaining, I was surprised to hear that snares often lineup better... I have started re-gridding my songs which has led to a huge increase in accuracy
@kleinpauldotcom well it isn't true. from a production standpoint, kicks are ALWAYS on beat whereas snares are often deliberately set to hit late(for a looser, lazy feel) or early(for a more urgent feel), at least for those tracks in which the producer has attempted to inject a more humanistic feel to the drums.
i'm very surprised that anyone would recommend attempting to quantize anything wrt the snares as it will often result in errors.
I tried your method with "marcel wood - BPM (original mix)" there is a recognizable reduction in tempo, and then it comes back up to the original tempo. is there any way to grid tracks that have a variable tempo through the song?
HELP: Most songs I'm trying to beat match (house/dance) I get the middle all sorted out then i get to the end and match it, then i go back to middle and its all off beat?
is there any reason that when i set a beatgrid perfectly, start playing the track the grid shifts away from the place i set it even though i have locked it? this happens throughout the track and i have to keep starting again??? any help with this would be great
This may sound silly, but what is the point of beat grid? I learned to DJ on 1200's and vinyl. I now have Traktor Scratch pro, and I manage to beat match tracks without really using a lot of the software functions. Is there a way to rabidly beat grid all your tracks? Like any modern DJ, I have countless gigs of MP3's, and it seems like it will take forever to beat grid all my tracks. Any info is appreciated! Thanks!
depends man, to the traditional dj theres probably very little use. personally i do alot of live remixing (check out my channel for my mixes ;) ) and auto sync is pretty much necessary for a lot of those.
i'm switching to traktor soon (just ordered an s4), personally i think i'm just gona beat grid the tracks i use in live remixing and just beatmatch the rest by ear, b/c doing this for every track would just be ridiculous
Big help from the video, but i am finding it difficult to properly set hip hop tracks with break beats. Even if I manage to reset the beat grid, the bpm reading is often still out by some distance. Are there tutorials for this? Please help!!! Thanks

on my grid i dont have the CUE nor CUP buttons, instead of those I have like a vinyl image and it doesnt let me use the cues!! :( how do I get or change those vinyl things to have the CUE and CUP buttons? HELP PLEASE!!!
Im thinking of buying traktor but a little confused at what this means, if i dont do this will the beats be out of sync? seems like a long process to me
@krenehan yes the beats will be out of sync with the beatgrids. if you are using traktor pro it is very important to beatgrid properly, not so important if you are using pro scratch. The process will only take you 30secs or so once you get used to it.
Can you set different beatgrids in one track? Older music has beat drift, and often the beat comes in at a different place after a transition. This makes loop set at the beginning rest at a different place than at the end- the beat grid is set correctly, but the track has shifted. Any ideas? TY
Good tutorial, but bear in mind people that the grid is rigid and is only accurate if your tracks beats are regular. best to edit tracks in Ableton (beat gird them) and re save the rendered track, this way your tracks will beat grid perfectly on loading into traktor.
Wow I was searching for something else on YouTube and found this and I had no clue about that, I use Traktor Pro (and I can honestly say) I prob don't use half of the full features on this but you just taught me something new ... And I have been using Traktor Dj Studio 3 ..... THANKS
i had a similar experience.. i can still use oldschool style of beatmatching, but i'm essentially converted.. beatgrids have changed the way i d.j. forever.
i've been beatmatching the old-fashioned way for 10 years.. so this is nice, i can play with the effects and my phrasing more.
I have the same setup. You need to have the X-Session turned on before starting Traktor. Then, go into Preferences > Controller Manager and select the X-Session from the Device dropdown. Now you have to map inputs, for instance click on Add Input and select Transport > Play/Pause, then click on the Learn button and press the left Play/Pause button on the X-Session, it will be detected, un-click Learn and then change the Assignment to Deck A. You'll figure out the rest.
use whatever is most common in your music.. only thing is that you have to use the same thing on all your music, or else you're gonna be moving the entire beatgrid around in the middle of a mix, this can sometimes cause weirdness in the sound.
honestly, i can't imagine why you couldn't use the first beat too.. techno, house and techhouse are pretty consistent with the beat.
Seems to me that mr. golden plays between house and breaks, so he probably wants the snare cause between breaks, house and some techno the snare is consistent..
but seriously, just play with it.. it's not difficult to do.
If you happen to have a track that doesn't have a consistent beat, you can just wing it..
yeah indeed, thanx for your help anyway, i have a vinyl background, now starting with 2 new traktor kontrol x1's, so it's kinda of new to me. but i guess it's not that hard.
I actually have my keyboard setup to do some adustments.. 'set grid marker', 'move grid marker' and 'bpm'.. so i can fine tune it a bit during a set, but i only just had my first set in front of >100 people this past saturday.. b4 that i was using CDs or Vynil w/ Serato.. I was pretty happy with the results, lets me put more effort into playing with effects during a mix execution.
oke, nice job. Yeah i actually always was against the whole electronic dj trend, as i felt (And lot of friends and fellow dj's) that it was a bit fake to sync, as everyone can do that. But if you think about the time you save, which you normally would spend on pitching, it can get really creative. I mean it's not really special someone mixing 2 tracks with sync, but when you play 4 decks and just loop and go crazy it can get really sick, and that requires some skill
i was already doing looping to do cuts and over lapping.. now i'm running effects on those loops. unfortunately my controller ain't good enough for 4 decks, but i may try to find a way to do that with my old usb keyboard. even attach hotkeys to the keyboard, but also midi chain the key of the loop/hotkey track so i can play a bit of a song like a keyboard. :/ dunno, still just playing with it, but so far i'm pretty happy.
btw.. it might be because the style i play is so trickey.. or maybe you'll find this too, but I still have to beatmatch it.. its just a different way that is in it's way more consistent over the course of a track... I often feel like it's slightly out of sync, and i adjust the new song accordingly.. just not nearly as much as i did before.
I d.j. glitch hop, which is such a random style to d.j., and there's several tracks i have where the 1.1.1 doesn't have a recognizable 1st beat, snare or clap, and i just sorta went on 'feeling' as far as placing it, and it works..
just like oldschool d.j.ing, where u just stop the LP or CD at the point where you 'feel' the first beat.
so I have to do this for every one of my tracks just so I can have them auto sync so I can mess around with samples and stuff? man that just kind of wrecked my day...
Haha yeah I know I was going to do this but instead im just going to buy an audio interface and some headphones and just try to beat match songs myself....might not be perfect but sure is much better than doing this to my thousands of tracks that I have.
ok Ive got it, Im actually really impressed about how versatile, easy to use, and effective traktor is...ok so what you do, is you set a grid marker at the first beat, and one towards the end and it will set a good beat grid inbetween...and yes its a pain in the ass but ableton is even workse when it comes to setting beatgrids...so thats the way I prep for my sets now, beatgrid all the tracks I plan to use, and Ill eventually get them all :P in a few yrs lol, but thats ok IT WORKS BABY WOO!!
Does grid only work if the pre recorded song was recorded in sync with a metronome? Or is there a way to warp a recording of a live jam that doesn't have a consistent BPM? I'm constantly struggling trying to get some old dub tracks to sync up to more modern dubstep tracks. HELP!
if the tempo is inconsistant then there is no way for traktor to be able to sync them, the only way is to use ableton live; which can warp the track to fit a perfect consistant tempo, and then render the song back as a WAV. Ableton can do this, traktor cannot
yes basicly this is the way of beatgrifds in traktor pro but when you try to do that is all a chaos, when i try to fix the beats at the start of the track, the beats at the ends are moving and so on, is very frustrating, and i try it a lot of times and i still am confused and not understing at all what is really going on.
Read the manual. All time, pitch, and key options are fully described. Or are you using an illegal "crack" version? In that case you'd have to get a "Dummies" book that basically waters down the official manual.
this tutorial ALMOST makes sense, but I just can't get it to work on some tracks. It seems like Traktor works like magic with some tacks, and other tracks it just CAN'T manage... I try to line up the grid markers with the beat peaks, but when I play it back, attempting to sync with another track, it is a total trainwreck. Very frustrating, I've had this problem with Traktor since vers 2, that's why I switched to Live.... :P
i cant thank you enough ive been trying to figure out how to beat grid well for ages now. Read so many ways on forums but they just didnt seem that simple. Thanks!
not really actually, In traktor you can easily set a grid marker at the front and back of the track, and it sets it up perfectly inbetween so you dont have to do many beatgrids per track like you do in ableton
Hi my friend, im manuel from argentiniean thx for your demo, can you tell me wich program you made this demo, cos i've cam studio but my screen it's slowly and yours not, can you tell me pls thx...big hug from argentinian....Manu
Hey Ean. Traktor 3 had a box so you could double or half the bpm read out which I can't seem to find in Traktor Pro???
for example a dubstep tune produced in half time and 140bpm often appears as 70bpm which makes it difficult to mix with other songs that appear at the correct bpm. In Traktor 3 I could click one button and it would change from 70bpm to the correct 140bpm...
This tutorial is very good, but I'd like to know if The Master Tempo is set auto or manually? Please Ean let me know how I can beatgrid all those files ripped from a vinyl. Many thanks!
@eangolden Hey Ean. Great videos. Can you please tell me how you create multiple beat grids? I have few tracks where either the tempo changes 2 or 3 times during the track or the track has been edited from 2 sources so the beat gets knocked off. Thanks
In Traktor 3, this was so much easier. Proper detection of beats after analyzation (indicated by white lines), switch to Internal mode, click white beat line, place beatmarker via hotkey. Done.
Now in TPro, analyzation is poor, too much setup time and you must jump between two panels to delete a grid marker!
Always informative and I've learned something once again. Still really not too clear on what the difference between the "move grid" and "bpm increment" buttons are exactly but the method I used to use was turn the ticker on, auto-grid on the 1st kick (snap-on), use the tempo nudge buttons until the beats sounded synced then use the "move grid" buttons to match the phase.
This usually worked but has failed on a few tracks...this seems more accurate.
The problem Im having, is that I cant have say 2 samples play in the bottom, have 2 that Im working with at the top, and have all 4 work together because something will go out of beat sooner or later, which is the reason I wantd to use sync in the first place since I love mixing by hand...but do I seriously have to set these grids by hand for every single track?? Why is it that when I press sync its in beat for a bit, then goes off...but then when I press sync again its perfect for a bit? thanks
thanks for the scoop. The auto BPM works better when you have "Snap Mode" enabled, which I see in the video is not enabled. Although I feel that manually setting the beat grid is more accurate.
I really enjoy your videos. I learn alot from these! Thanks!
I've mapped the "Move Grid" to the pitch bend and jogwheel in my controller setup (When clicking a modifier). I found that the tap and autogrid will work quicker when I use that and just move the grid. (Some songs fall through though). :( This weekend I found that instead of using bend I use set the sync and use move grid untill it's in sync.
So I do the editing when I lay the track. Saves me alot of time for prepping. :)
i just dont get this program..at all

'set grid marker', 'move grid marker' and 'bpm'.. so i can fine tune it a bit during a set, but i only just had my first set in front of >100 people this past saturday.. b4 that i was using CDs or Vynil w/ Serato.. I was pretty happy with the results, lets me put more effort into playing with effects during a mix execution.
smokydave 2 years ago
oke, nice job.
Jeroenbos12 2 years ago
i was already doing looping to do cuts and over lapping.. now i'm running effects on those loops. unfortunately my controller ain't good enough for 4 decks, but i may try to find a way to do that with my old usb keyboard. even attach hotkeys to the keyboard, but also midi chain the key of the loop/hotkey track so i can play a bit of a song like a keyboard. :/ dunno, still just playing with it, but so far i'm pretty happy.
smokydave 2 years ago
btw.. it might be because the style i play is so trickey.. or maybe you'll find this too, but I still have to beatmatch it.. its just a different way that is in it's way more consistent over the course of a track... I often feel like it's slightly out of sync, and i adjust the new song accordingly.. just not nearly as much as i did before.
smokydave 2 years ago
I d.j. glitch hop, which is such a random style to d.j., and there's several tracks i have where the 1.1.1 doesn't have a recognizable 1st beat, snare or clap, and i just sorta went on 'feeling' as far as placing it, and it works..
just like oldschool d.j.ing, where u just stop the LP or CD at the point where you 'feel' the first beat.

This is what I call an extremely important and usefull tutorial.
Many thanks 4 this vid dude!!!!

Is there a way to store this information? For example if my music hdd dies, does that mean I lose all my grid information as well?

all that info is written in your collection.nml file in the traktor folder. backup this file.

so I have to do this for every one of my tracks just so I can have them auto sync so I can mess around with samples and stuff? man that just kind of wrecked my day...
DudasMiska 2 years ago
Haha yeah I know I was going to do this but instead im just going to buy an audio interface and some headphones and just try to beat match songs myself....might not be perfect but sure is much better than doing this to my thousands of tracks that I have.
laxgolie4ever 2 years ago
same here... I even find this funnier, dont you ?!
kahuitel 2 years ago
ok Ive got it, Im actually really impressed about how versatile, easy to use, and effective traktor is...ok so what you do, is you set a grid marker at the first beat, and one towards the end and it will set a good beat grid inbetween...and yes its a pain in the ass but ableton is even workse when it comes to setting beatgrids...so thats the way I prep for my sets now, beatgrid all the tracks I plan to use, and Ill eventually get them all :P in a few yrs lol, but thats ok IT WORKS BABY WOO!!
DudasMiska 2 years ago
Does grid only work if the pre recorded song was recorded in sync with a metronome? Or is there a way to warp a recording of a live jam that doesn't have a consistent BPM? I'm constantly struggling trying to get some old dub tracks to sync up to more modern dubstep tracks. HELP!
mothymothy 2 years ago
if the tempo is inconsistant then there is no way for traktor to be able to sync them, the only way is to use ableton live; which can warp the track to fit a perfect consistant tempo, and then render the song back as a WAV. Ableton can do this, traktor cannot
electriktricks 2 years ago
Yeah, I agree. Ableton can do this shit way better. I figured Traktor would have caught up by now but its seems not so I'm sticking to Ableton.
coolshit28 2 years ago
yes basicly this is the way of beatgrifds in traktor pro but when you try to do that is all a chaos, when i try to fix the beats at the start of the track, the beats at the ends are moving and so on, is very frustrating, and i try it a lot of times and i still am confused and not understing at all what is really going on.
eklyy 2 years ago
Eklyy,
Read the manual.

Yeah, Live eats Traktor. :-)

i cant thank you enough ive been trying to figure out how to beat grid well for ages now. Read so many ways on forums but they just didnt seem that simple. Thanks!
Pr0ject2 2 years ago
Use Ableton its a fuck side easier.
coolshit28 2 years ago
not really actually, In traktor you can easily set a grid marker at the front and back of the track, and it sets it up perfectly inbetween so you dont have to do many beatgrids per track like you do in ableton

Thanks so much!

Hey, I have a question, can you only mix sounds in Traktor Pro? Or can I make a mastering too? I mean, put effects on an allready made beat?
KaersoNProductionS 2 years ago
Bass boosting, make my beat softer etc etc.
KaersoNProductionS 2 years ago
You could -- but there's no point.
Got for a mastering program... Ableton. Logic. Sony Soundforge. Etc.

Is this possible in Traktor Pro???
please help.
NakedJKid 2 years ago
Yes you can, just look to the right of the large grey area with the bpm (shown in this video)

This tutorial is very good, but I'd like to know if The Master Tempo is set auto or manually? Please Ean let me know how I can beatgrid all those files ripped from a vinyl. Many thanks!
swosplus 2 years ago
I find that (when playing with minimal tecno tracks) that Traktors analysis is pretty much always spot on.... no need to mess with the grids
maybe I'm just lucky ? or do you generaly find that you need to beat grid all yoru tunes ?
MigoiMusic 2 years ago
Great stuff Ean, but how do you set beat grids if the tempo fluctuates for say a recording of a funk band that didn't record to a click? Thanks
CenileTV 2 years ago
You can warp the tracks in Ableton beforehand or you can place multiple grid markers for tracks with less tempo changes.
eangolden 2 years ago 2
@eangolden Hey Ean. Great videos. Can you please tell me how you create multiple beat grids? I have few tracks where either the tempo changes 2 or 3 times during the track or the track has been edited from 2 sources so the beat gets knocked off. Thanks
CheefRoberts 1 year ago
great. just great. even if traktor 3 was easier for this task - the new layout blows the old away ^^
WeltenWerft 2 years ago
thank you ean
Pytzek001 2 years ago
In Traktor 3, this was so much easier. Proper detection of beats after analyzation (indicated by white lines), switch to Internal mode, click white beat line, place beatmarker via hotkey. Done.
Now in TPro, analyzation is poor, too much setup time and you must jump between two panels to delete a grid marker!
DJChadG 2 years ago
you are freakin awesome. thanks for posting these vids!
vxxtntxxv 2 years ago
you are the pharkin man Ean!
THANKS!

Is it possible to sync tracks on the fly by adjusting the track tempo with a controller such as VCI-100?
Julle83 2 years ago
exactly- now your thinking. Yes- quite possible.
eangolden 2 years ago
The problem Im having, is that I cant have say 2 samples play in the bottom, have 2 that Im working with at the top, and have all 4 work together because something will go out of beat sooner or later, which is the reason I wantd to use sync in the first place since I love mixing by hand...but do I seriously have to set these grids by hand for every single track?? Why is it that when I press sync its in beat for a bit, then goes off...but then when I press sync again its perfect for a bit? thanks
DudasMiska 2 years ago
Awesome. A lot of my songs' BPMs weren't being analyzed properly by Traktor Pro. This should clear things up and make my mixes silky smooth!
oflores3402 2 years ago
This seems easier to setup compared to Traktor 3. Thanks for the info Ean.
urbanfabric 2 years ago
thanks for the scoop.
