  • y'know, they kinda suck. so why are they still so awesome??

  • neon deion, hahaha!

  • welcome to the K-MART of alternative music.

  • @pamaspamas whupsies... sorry... i ment 2 sey MAINSTREAM.

  • ugh football shit ruined mountainside. :(

  • hey they're pretty good live...and true to how it sounds on the recording (pisses me off when bands alter it)

  • jon stewart was alive in 1994?

  • this band was awesome

  • they are so ahead of their time. Ronald, musical genius, Stephen anything he does is awesome. Michael is just is perfect. Wayne is a classic rock star.

  • Robbt Krieger at bass!! XD!!!

  • His voice is so bad...It sounds so good.

  • What was so "infamous" about this?

  • @Haushinka1000Hours

I often wondered about this. I guess it's "infamous" in the sense that it's so chaotic (a good thing!) compared to most TV performances. Another example might be Dinosaur Jr's appearance on the Jenny Jones show (it's on Youtube).

  • Hard to believe these guys made The Soft Bulletin. Not that this is bad by any means, it's just so....different.

  • Steven may as well be playing with hammers at the start of Mountain Side

  • wow what kind of guitar is Ronald using??

  • Mountainside is one of the greatest rock songs ever written and performed. Right up there with "Cortez the Killer" and "Layla". This is good, real good shit. I loved this band then and I love them now.

  • who dareth say this terrible? this is both rock, and roll. for shame!

  • oh my god michael ivins had hair!

  • Wow The Flaming Lips were around when Deion played for the niners? I did not know that

  • @damianocunego7 Yeah, The Flaming Lips have actually been around since like '82. It's ridiculous.

  • @elflotador Yes he does - isn't it great?? Sort of like Bob Dylan's voice sucked when he was singing songs that changed your world. Not everything has to be pretty. Sometimes emotion is more important than pleasantry.

  • Flaming Lips are not hot ....and they suck

  • @UkeeDreamer Some of the best bands start off sucky. Btw if you think they suck so bad then what are you doing here? :D

  • they blocked them out for the sake of terrible wordplay

  • she DON'T use jelly.... who does jon think he is, pat boone?

  • Only Fox would interrupt the Flaming lips for football.

  • bass player looks like robbie krieger

  • @bojanks15 haha. I always thought that. I remember thinking that guy looks like Robbie Kreiger back in 199whatever. You are right.

  • @bojanks15 He kind of does now that you mention it. His name is Michael Ivins, and he's pretty much bald these days. The Flaming Lips are SOOOO much better a band today than they were back then.

That dude playing lead guitar is no longer with them, thank God! The dude on drums, Steven Drozd, is the lead guitarist / keyboardist, and he pretty much writes all the songs. Kliph Scurlock is their current drummer and he's damn good. A cross between Keith Moon and John Bonham.

  • @JCM1325 oh god you suck so much, did you get into the flaming lips thru coldplay or some shit? GOD, so wrong!

  • @rayolacer hahah...whatever that's supposed to mean. Please further explain yourself. Your response to my comment makes no sense.

  • Jon Stewart? It's awkward seeing him on here...

  • john Stewart? dude, I had no clue that he was around for that long.

  • Saw them live recently. Would pay triple what I did to see that show again. If they come near you see them. Whether you like the music or not, their shows are mind blowing.

  • i like gasoline over Vaseline.

  • Excuse me sir, it's "She DON'T Use Jelly"

  • n i dont use butter

  • i didn't know that 90s cameras were so shitty. i mean this is really shitty.

  • @ohwello cameras have been fine since the late 60s. the low quality comes from an old broadcast to an old tv and recorded using some probably even older beat up vhs tape that had been used to tape over things before hand several times

  • @ohwello It's not the camera, it's the fact it was recorded on VHS. Notice the tracking glitch at the top of the frame?

  • @ohwello Back in my day LOL

  • Bring back Grunge!

  • this was a killer lineup.

  • Why does he smile between each verse? I watched him singing this live on a couple other live performances & he did the same thing. Probably because the song was mainly written as sort of a joke & unexpected to them it became a huge hit. This bnd is great!!!!

  • @sergei145514. He's blazing off his mind on LSD? :) Awesome band.

  • too good, is this real? Are they real?

  • They remind me of dinosaur jr in this gig

  • cool thats steven drozd on drums

  • check out my cover of this. I think I do it justice

  • Quick, someone tell me what kind of guitar Ronald is playing.

  • Cant tell. very interesting guitar body. In the second song he has a Fender Jaguar. but this one is something totally different. sorry couldn't help.

  • It's cool man. Thanks anyhow. I could tell the second one was a Jag, but the first one is really hard to tell. I think it might be a Dusenburg or something like that.

  • @mastodonowns69

    Electric

  • Electric is the brand name? Got a link?

  • flaming lips kinda lost it. though embryonic is a great record.

  • jesus raped jon stewart

  • @captainslam ?????????

  • sorry...little off my rocker that night

  • wow, i used to watch this show

  • Drozd and Coyne, victory!

  • Why is it infamous?

  • FUCK OFF AND DIE YOU CUNTS

  • you shut your whore mouth when the flaming lips are playing!

  • That looks like Jon Stewart trying to do a Jerry Seinfeld impression. Oh 1994, how I don't miss you.

  • I love how Jon Stewart was being all "MTV" and would put his feet up on the coffee table during this show.

Whatever, still love him, AND THE FLAMING LIPS!

  • RIDICULOUSLY SUBLIMEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • I think he's playing a national guitar.

  • why is it infamous?

  • possibly because at their shows they use this clip of jon introducing them when they play it

  • i think they misused the word haha

  • fukin mental great mo ko krazy bad shit hot gob stop kings of sound boom

  • what guitar is Ronald playing?

  • AWESOME performance, almost unbearable audio quality. VHS, RIP

  • we miss Ronald playing guitar for the Flaming Lips

  • thats awesome! thanks for posting :)

  • Why is this infamous?

  • is it?

  • That's what it says in the video description.

  • that's what I said!

  • Is that Robbie Krieger (Doors) on bass?

    JK

  • Jon Stewart can't even get the name of the song right.

  • boo hoo

  • What album is "Mountainside" off of?

  • In A Priest Driven Ambulance

  • haha i love how wayne looks completely different back then yet has the same exact voice

  • Wonderful! It's nice to go back in time a bit. One of my favorite bands. No, my favorite band. Glad to be reminded that they had fun with the songs even in the beginning.

  • music needs to be weird.

  • RIGHT YOU ARE ZAKROCKER93:-D

  • @ZAKROCKER93. yes. music does need to be weird. but their needs to be generic music to make music like this even more special

  • I think that's the thing thats so great. They're not taking it "Seriously" as you asked. It's just a silly pop song which is probably why they chose for the lyrics to lack and substance or depth. I personally think it would sound stupid if it had great lyrics written for it.

  • The lyrics are inane, but also wildly creative. The whole thing is a drugged-up spaced-out joke a la Syd Barrett. Pretend it's a kid's song on shrooms and the lyrics will make more sense.

  • I think you are missing the point

  • chicken fucker. and hooray zakrocker93

  • loveee this song!!!

  • interesting and neat to see this as i only know them from the past ten years or so.

  • the flaming lips are no more "trendy" than the yeah yeah yeahs.

  • Comment removed

  • no u fuck off and shut ur mouth while The Flaming Lips are playing, U SON OF A BITCH

  • A+

I miss the sound of 1993

  • Flaming lips are trendy? I would say most people today have never heard any of their music. Their not exactly super famous or anything. If you dont like this music why did you look it up? Just to tell people the only reason they like this music is because its trendy? Your so full of shit it hurts.

  • Man, this takes me back to middle school.

  • hey man steven is my godfather! ma dad's name was paul papproth, they was friends in highschool!

if you don't know who steven is go somewhere else.

  • don't be so cocky. i've been a huge fan of the flaming lips for many years. i walked to school with ego trippin at the gates of hell on headphones for pretty much a year straight. i don't know who steven is, and i don't really care. you seem to like music for all the wrong reasons. please stop bragging.

  • haha they all look so different

  • Haha Wayne really shows the whole idea off singing in key is overrated...imagine him in front of the American Idol-jury ^^

  • anyone know what the second song they were singing??

  • mountain side

  • Is that Drozd on the drumos?

  • yeah he was originally the drummer, and i believe still "technically" is, he did all the studio drumming, and for a little while when they didnt have the current drummer "kliph" who i believe is just a hired on guy, they would play a video of drozd drumming with the drum sample playing

  • he played drums before he played guitar for the flaming lips

  • seeing em tonight!

    hiwbquobfuoebwuobuob!!! :D

  • this is so weird that guy looks nothing like wayne coyne. Would have never guessed its him.

  • Heh...Guess you haven't been following them too long? That's what he's always looked like. At some point in the late 90's he just decided to grow the beard and stop dying the hair. :)

  • Flippin' Lips absolutely gd rocked! Just as they were hittin' they're stride the voiceover cuts them off. Still ... GODROK!

  • "She Doesn't Use Jelly"?

  • hmm good point. tlk show guy wrong

  • Let me start off by saying that I am a fan of the Lips. Have 7 of their albums, hosted Zeireeka parties in college and consider The Soft Bulletin to be among the best albums of the 20th Century. With that said and expecting many angry and expletive driven comments soon, they are horrible in this clip. At times they even sound as if they don't know how to play their instruments. Very amateurish.

  • I totally agree with you, but for some reason I find that to be part of the charm here.

  • they really didn't begin to exceed on their instruments talent wise until the soft bulletin, in their defense. They were not a band based on talent. For a while all they tried to do was be loud as hell. Not saying that they weren't good at their instruments though.

  • Honestly, though, it might be more accurate to say "Drozd didn't really begin to exceed at ALL of the instruments until the Soft Bulletin." I think they're great now, but I kind of miss the days when they all actually played. (Clouds Taste Metallic might be my favorite album, in that regard.)

  • they were prolly all high off their asses

  • I want to see these guys so bad.

  • Wayne Coyne looks so young in this vid!!!

but, i was looking up, he was born in 1961, which means he is 33 years old here! ..he looks more like 24

  • Eh, you know. SOOKIE!

  • the flaming lips played this just last week in australia! the concert was fucking awesome!

  • What about this performance makes this "infamous"?

  • the "show". not "the" performance"."

  • Well, what about this "show" makes it infamous then? The description leads me to believe the Lips were the "infamous" part.

  • I was wondering that myself...

  • leave it to Jon Stewart to fix the grammar and change don't to doesn't lol

  • this song just sticks in your head! I can't stop singing it and I'm driving my bf nuts!!

  • whats so "infamous" about it?

  • they cut the band off mid-song

  • it used to be used in their live set to introduce the song. Not sure if they still use it..

  • Comment removed

  • i was there too. it was beautiful.

  • yeah they do! i saw them last nyytteeee!!!!!!

  • totally different band then

  • i would give you a thumbs up but i can't i only like one song but i have no idea what the name of it is

  • Probably The W.A.N.D

  • It's no big secret that Wayne can't sing, but the music is good and Wayne loves the music he plays so who cares?

  • the same thing that makes you a dick.

  • what exactly makes this infamous?

  • The Flaming Lips.

  • they really are great.

  • they cut them off!

  • that's called "play us out"

  • It seems as white stripes are trying to copy the voice from flaming lips.

  • the hell are you talking about? the only guys white stripes are trying to copy are all black and long dead by now.

  • is that a broken SG?

  • the 'lips starting to sell out. but they were still amazing back then... far out

  • A reminder that the Lips were once awesome.

  • What do you mean were?!

  • Yep they've been amazing in the last ten years, never mind back in the days of this song.

  • jason smith loves this band and cold play

  • Used to sleep with my GF in the back of my Ford and this song would come on, right after we got stoned!

  • YOU'RE SO COOL I WISH I WAS AS COOL AS YOU

  • I have been looking for this forever!!

  • vasoline on toast? lol

  • I got to meet Wayne last night in DC and I jammed this song with him!!!!!

  • Wow, really?! You have a guitbox conveniently on you? That's badass.
