  • "demographically speaking"... haha. I believe he meant aesthetically speaking.

  • Rock and roll was designed fro the neck down!

  • he was better at interviews than singing..

  • 0:28 Pat Benetars in looooove ;)

  • DLR once said the one love of his life was singer/actress Apollonia. he should've just married her, had a couple of bambinos, settled down. I think he regrets that in alot of ways...

  • Comment removed

  • When i hear people say DLR was/is a jerk/has a big ego..........at least he celebrates music!! People like Kurt Cobain couldnt even talk to an audience. Dont be so offended that DLR sets such a high standard!!!!!!! At very least a VH concert with DLR will be entertaining.DLR is the meaning of the word.....COOL!!!!!!! And if you dont like it or get it.......GO LISTEN TO R.E.M or George Micheal!! PUSSYS! STOP CRYING!!VH2011........Go listen to chickenshit!!!

  • This guy is so cool and sure of himself he's not afraid to cross his legs and fold his hands like a girl in an interview. Rock on buddy!

  • @Andgrey And as soon as someone you DON'T idolize does it, they are a flaming homosexually aren't they. -.-

  • @t3hPoundcakeHD Not really. I just like my rock to have an edge to it. Compare any well regarded front man to Hagar, be it Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler, Axle Rose Ozzy Ossborne and Hagar will come off sounding soft. As I said he may have great pipes, but he dosn't sound like rock 'n roll. More like a parody of rock and roll. By the way I'm too old to "Idolize" anyone. I did "idolize" VH when I was 10 but then they got all poppy starting with Jump and they began to lose me.

  • @Andgrey Well music changes, nothing anyone can do about that.

  • 3 people never snorted coke at a VH concert

  • I couldn't put up with this mouth for more than a week. I guess Eddie and Alex put up with it for the millions and millions...and great music too. Dave knows how to write a great melody.

  • @ApeLikeCreature downvoted. david lee roth is the only cool one the others are cunts.

  • This guy always makes so much sense in every single interview over the last 30years, how does he know all of that, and he's so articulate, I know his father is a famous doctor in orange county but damn this guy really should be president

  • ROTH N ROLL!!

  • Hey look, it's Jeff Spicoli!!!

  • Diamond David Lee Roth is a WINNER!

  • the musics good the singers a retard

  • No one can interview like Dave.

  • Love David Lee Roth. He is funny and alpha as fu@#!

  • Oh my gosh he is so funny...so THAT is who David Lee Roth is.

  • I honestly like Sammy Hagar more than Roth... Hagar was much more serious in contrast to Roth who is just off the walls insane. I like some of Roth's singing but I still prefer Hagar. Roth is better at getting girls though; can't argue with that.

  • Can say that man is hot!!!!!!!! Love is clothes and hair lol

  • Fantastic Quality,Definatly one of my Favorite DLR Interviews,Thanks for Sharing!!

  • To hell with Roth, show me more Pat Benatar @0:29.

  • who was more of a rock god then DLR in the 1980's? I'd trade 30 years of my life for 5 of DLR's late 70's to early 80's years.

  • Is He a Fag?

  • The Man.

  • He's fucking attractive.

  • David Lee Roth... the Best Frontman in the History.... VH rocks!

  • Where you see his act, dance in white tights in the Unchained video: Well David must have snagged that look from this southern Rock N rol band from 1976. I saw that band play and he danced like a sex symbol . THen DLR is in 1981 wearing that guys (and acting, dancing) like that guy. Could someone go find out what southern rock n roll band this was. They were like near Skynard in sound.

  • @Transnewton22 I believe you are referring to Black Oak Arkansas with Jim Dandy.

  • wat tha eddie is the one he is the most awesome

  • @skatinandrandomstuff One Of The Most Awesome? He's The 2nd Most Awesome!!! Randy Rhoads Is The Most Awesome!!!

  • SO COOL

  • David Lee Roth was simply a GOD in the early 80's........a rock god to lusty teens.......and a sex god to thousands of women who got bedded by him after a VH gig........he snorted the finest cocaine and drank the best booze.......told the funniest jokes.........DAVE WAS THE SHIZZY !!!

  • 1981 was his prime

  • watch and learn kids, watch and learn. A master at the height of his powers

  • What's the nickname they can't tell us?

  • the ass-cracker. since he seems to split them cheeks in two

  • Whats the name of the concert with the song Dance The Night Away?

  • That said i must admit i MUST play monday morning quarterback on my boy roth......Mr Roth that 1st era as a whole was 100% ART BRILLIANT ART !!!

  • In my opinion, THIS, THIS is DAVID LEE ROTH (WITH his ROCKER hair)-and THIS, THIS is VAN HALEN 1:02! I don't know WHO that band is with someone playing bass called Wolfgang.

  • @AngeloA....well if you come from that original era so be it you have every right 2 bitch i guess....?.....that said i come from that original era and i relize without wolfgang dave roth and eddie halen would still be a bong hit pipe dream for the rest of us. im gratefull that national nitemare van journey hager is dead gone and buried,,,,,WOLF=GOD THAN K GOD !!

  • Wolfgang is a cool guy but not a Van Halen guy

  • @z80s Wolfgang Is A Freakin' Van Halen You Idiot!!! His Last Name Is Van Halen!!!

  • "Its like hosting a party, or a TV game show!" LOL

  • at 1:45, was that dave screaming out his lungs

  • i think thats michael anthony

  • yeah dance the night away

  • HAHA look at Martha Quin's subtle expression in her face at exactly 0:12

  • Thats Pat Benatar bro at more like :30

  • one of his great interviews , he is simply brilliant when it comes to interviews , hes honest , exciting , gees he has more character then the rest of vh put together times 10. hes what made vh differant from the rest,

  • roth was great and he still is but he did change and not for the better, but he is still my idol

  • never seen this live footage before

  • Diamond Dave for president! :)

  • Might as well.

  • @Li11en oh hell yeah if we had dlr for president the US would fuckin kickass again!

  • At Their epic peak. 1981=the level of this brilliant(roth era) band.

  • I love him!

  • Very well said: Success is what you give to yourself, fame is what people give you!

  • I believe this was the last rock interview that the word incongruity was used.

  • Greetings From New York !!!

David Lee Roth You Are the Best !!! The Man Who Change the Story Of Rock ....

    We Love You ....

  • ya u wish huh

  • O K FAG101!

  • what song are they doing

  • Popcorn & JuJu beans, Classic!!

  • Just love David Lee Roth, he´s the best.

  • everybody should shut their mouth! especially hunkola! eddie van halen is the van halen, without eddie their would never have been a van halen! david wasnt a jerk, eddie ISNT a jerk.

    van halen rocks...

    im done

  • How can Dave be a jerk when he made millions on the last VH tour............but still volunteers as an EMT in NYC to help the community ??

Eddie is the arrogant jerk in Van Halen............David Lee Roth was always the cool one.

  • idnt think hes done that in a while

  • @Hunkola I agree with your comment...Although DLR has been as zainy as they come when he opens up his mouth he is down to earth and will give t you the time of day...

EVH and his brother seem to always avoid the camera or many interviews considering their stardom. Maybe a sign of parinoia or something more.

Eddies wife talked about him in her book and claimed he had a very bad coke and drinking habbit...This was early on when they met.

  • @Hunkola

kind of true what you say about VH and DLR. Eddie could not cope with three (3!) excellent singers and showmen. And where is the band now? And where is he now? Dave is still active in contrast.

  • @ulizinho -- Not sure I agree that VH had 3 excellent singers.....David Lee was certainly a legendary frontman but Hagar and Cherone were awful and boring.......but it's time people recognize that Eddie is the real jerk in Halen......he's got the huge ego that fires anyone who gets in his way or doesnt do it his way.......Dave has always been the cool dude who just wants to make the fans happy

  • @Hunkola

Technically, Dave was the worst of the three and Cherone the best. Concerning showmanship, it is vice versa, and that what counts for a band like VH.

I saw Cherone with Extreme in Rock am Ring, Germany. Very professional, but unfortunate. And it was the time of the rise of Grunge, so the crowd booed at him.

Dave may have a superlarge Ego, but is not a jerk. Indeed, I find him very friendly and disciplined in his way.

  • @ulizinho --- LOL, I always laugh when someone says Dave was not "technically" a good singer.......good technique only applies to American Idol singers and they are douchebags.......Dave brought so much to the table like showmanship, sex appeal, and awesome lyrics --- you cant get that from a "technical" singer. Frontmen like Mick Jagger and Brian Johnson of AC/DC are not technical singers but they are legends. Dave was much better than Cherone or Hagar in Van Halen.

  • @Hunkola

I did not really contradict you, man. To me, Dave is the most flamboyant Rocksinger ever. But i dare say, that the Hagar songs tend to have more melody and that Sammy could better hold a melody, whereas the Roth-songs tend to be more bluesy or speaking-alike. Meanstreet even seems like a dirty rap-song, really great !

It depends on what kind of music you want to perform. Dave is best for what he did, but he could not sing Don Giovanni, you see?!

  • @ulizinho --- I guess when you say melody you mean love ballad type songs......and Van Hagar was mostly those type of songs.......but I grew up on Roth-era and those were heavier, party-type songs that made you feel good......and yes Dave had a deeper bluesy voice but that complimented Eddie's guitar sound better than Cherone or Hagar.......but I dont think technical prowess has much influence in rock......many rock singers arent good technically but are great showmen and flashy.

  • @Hunkola

I pressume that Eddie wanted VH to become a band like Led Zeppelin, meaning, more songorientated and less show. Cherone therefor was a good choice. But this step was not appreciated by the VH-Fans.

Listen to "Year to the day" and try to figure out, which Led Zep song might be the inspiration.

  • @ulizinho --- Basically what happened for the "VH 3" album is that Eddie had total control of the band and Cherone was just a hired gun.......that's why the album stunk so bad and fans got pissed.......back in the golden days, David Lee Roth had more control of Van Halen and that's why the music was so fun and kick-ass........whenever Edward has total control --- bad things happen with the music.

  • @Hunkola

Honestly, I do not know much about internals and intimate things about Vh and DLR.

It is just my impression, that Eddie can´t cope with strong personalities.

I found it quite strange, that he talked badly about Dave and Sammy and was likewise disappointed with Cherone.

I guess, all the three singers can still say that they were quite lucky and happy to have worked and played with the VH-brothers and Anthony. They all made tons of money, didn t they?

  • @ulizinho --- I've followed Van Halen for 25 years and they are my favorite band, so it would be wise to respect my opinion.......I fully agree with you that Eddie has trouble tolerating his lead singers.......it's all because Eddie wants to be a dictator in his band and quickly fires people when they dont follow his rules.......just look at the reasons Ed fired Dave, Sammy, Cherone, Mike Anthony --- all because they werent obedient slaves to his every wish & command

  • @Hunkola

I do not know the reasons for the many splits in the VH era.

But if there are so many, it must have to do with Eddie himself.

I guess it is partly caused by his alcoholism.

Likewise, Dave himself had several changes in the lineup of his band. Steve Vai stayed only for two albums, and the great Becker had to quit because of his disease.

  • @ulizinho --- Eddie is the main reason for so many lead singers in Van Halen.......Edward has a huge ego and needs to be in total control of his band.......so he fires anyone who pisses him off except his brother and son........he's the typical drunk asshole who has a special talent and never had to treat people with common decency because he's always making money with his skills.......same problem affects pro athletes and movie stars.

  • @Hunkola

I liked the VH3. I think it was the right decision of the band to try a more "serious" approach to Rock. You can´t go on playing "Jump" if you can´t really jump on stage with a hip-operation. You can´t play Unchained if you are a 50something. That is ridiculous. Look how ridiculous the Stones are. So, I appreciated this step, and I was disappointed that they did not stick to their decision and made the best out of it, as Roth would surely do.

  • @ulizinho -- It sound like you grew up in Europe, but I can tell you in America we counted on Van Halen for old-fashioned kick-ass rock music.....so when VH3 came out in 1998 many fans were pissed because it didnt sound like the Van Halen we all loved with Dave.......it was just weird, progressive rock. Sorry, but Roth-era VH is about fun and a cocky attitude and that's what people want from the mighty Van Halen --- take it or leave it.

  • @Hunkola

Yes I am German. VH had only a few Tours through Europe and never achieved the same superstar status as they did in the USA.

When I became interested in Hard Rock and Metal, around 1986, Dave had already left VH. I was more or less the only one among my mates who was interested in VH and DLR. Most of them were crazy for Metallica and later turned towards Grunge, Death Metal or Hard Core. I myself was more interested in Vai, VH and DLR, coz the music is so positive and energetic.

  • @ulizinho -- I'm not sure why Van Halen never became huge in Europe......they never toured there very much so maybe that's why.......they have a lot of fans in Australia but dont go there much......kinda sad really.....I became interested in VH around 1984 when Jump was huge.....but I bought all the old albums and quickly knew Roth-era was better than Hagar-era.......Dave has a great attitude and his lyrics make you feel good and upbeat about life when most metal was depressing and angry music.

  • @Hunkola

Exactly ! DLR and VH can make me feel happy and hot.

I came to these videos coz I have had a discussion going on in an online Iron Maiden forum. I love Iron Maiden, the one of the few Metal bands that I still listen to. Someone in the forum stated that DLR was ridiculous, I defended him.

He and Bruce Dickinson have lot of things in common, though the art of IM and VH/DLR is quite different. They are like two poles of the Hard Rock spectrum.

I like them both so much.

  • @ulizinho -- I cant say I really got into Iron Maiden.......I was a horny teenager when Roth Halen got me interested in stuff they sang about --- drinking beer and having sex with gorgeous girls.......so thats why I got into bands like Motley Crue and Ratt......80s bands who had cool music but sang about stuff teen boys were interested in......but when I got older I dug metal bands like Metallica, Priest, Ozzy, and Queensryche

  • @Hunkola

I am not a metal head, and i am not familiar with the scene today.

Sometimes I hate Metal, coz it is too noisy and too much about appearing tough or brutal, but the musicians are much less concerned about the music itself, as it is the case in classical music or Jazz.

But I am kind of faithful with IM and VH/DLR.

Iron Maiden had similar problems when Bruce left the band. The new singer was not bad, indeed he had a great voice. But kids wanted Bruce, who himself was 2nd singer.

  • @ulizinho -- My interest in metal is rather picky......I stopped liking Metallica and Ozzy after 1992. Same thing with Queensryche. All those metal acts got weird when grunge hit the scene and they tried to change their sound too much to keep up with the times. It just pissed me off and I stopped listening to them.

I will always love Roth-era Van Halen because it was a certain kind of attitude they had. Dave wasn't afraid to be flashy and cocky and having fun. It was a glorious time.

  • @Hunkola ya and to make things worse eddie kicked mike out of the band and replaced him with his son!

  • @Hunkola Yeah, Eddie is a vindictive, petty, asshole. Such a shame too.

  • @Hunkola I can vouch for this, as I have met the band. Dave and Ed's son are the ONLY nice ones.

  • One of the world's greatest philosophers.

  • 2:05 The ever-present tall boy can of Schlitz malt. Ed lived on that shit!

  • David Lee Roth may have been a real jerk, but he was the greatest.

  • the bassist looks alot like chuck norris...

  • best frontman in the buisness.

    thanks for posting!

  • Hes a drunk cocky bastard, but Hes still cool, and hes not a dumbass, and a bloody awesome singer!

  • Roth for all his craziness, paradoxically, is the real deal, he makes alot of sense.

  • something people dont and never did understand is how smart dave was and he knew how to play into being a rock star in the 80's. theres a few interviews on here when dave turns it off and lets his smarts do the all the talkin instead of the image

  • hes a very educated speaker and a good one at that!

  • he actually makes a really good point here, a lot of my friends scoff at van halen because they arent "deep" enough, i explain to them that listening to music is like choosing a movie, you dont want a serious drama every time. Van Halen is like Dumb and Dumber of beavis and butthead, its so dumb its brilliant and extremly entertaining, moreso than saving private ryan, and Roth explains that quite well here

  • they were definitely the Led Zeppelin of the 80's almost (cough, cough, Hagar, Cough, Cough)

  • Uuuuuuuuuuu.... the lucky man... he WAS...

The most beautiful man on the world... he WAS...

GOOD LUCK, Dave!!! You're a great guy!

  • About 50% of what DLR says makes sense. Not bad, not great. Very funny. Used to be a very good r&r singer. Voice now struggles.

  • Cool!

  • He seems kinda smart!

  • Thats Cold because he's a rocker he can't be

    smart?

  • if ur a rocker u can be smart and a good rocker look at paul gilbert and rik emmet

  • roth rocks!

  • u cant really judge someone if u havent met them, just cause they look like a jerk.

  • Aw...A nice Jewish boy from Indiana done good!

  • Ha! From a "Band of Merry Men" to a "Band of Married Men."

  • Keep on rockin dave...can tell you did a few rails prior to this interview!!! LOL

  • I'm amazed that so many people still think David Lee Roth is the arrogant asshole and Eddie is the "nice guy".....that was a myth created by the media.....it's actually the opposite - Diamond Dave is very friendly & down-to-Earth and Eddie is the egotistical selfish prick....just look at how many people Eddie fired over the years from Van Halen (Sam twice, Dave twice, Mike Anthony, managers, etc) and you'll see what I mean. Just because Ed smiles a lot on camera doesnt make him a "nice guy"....

  • i met diamond dave in a bar in trenton new jersey back in late 1981, i was 19. hes very cool, he didnt seem stuck on himself, i bought him a shot of jack and a beer, and then i got a signed picture of the band, hey diamond dave keep on rocking.

  • Too bad bands dont look and play like this anymore.

  • gotta love dave. what the hell is an incongruaty?. only dave.

  • It's a word in English that means inconsistent. Dave wasn't inventing a word. (Gotta love public education.)

  • What I meant was, what other rocker could come up with a word like that?. Let alone use it. However, I am sure a Harvard graduate, like yourself, would find many ways of using it in your comments on youtube.

  • Dave didn't attend Harvard, and I certainly didn't. It seems to me any high school graduate should be familiar with that word, especially if he took any math courses.

You thought it was odd for Dave to use that word. I thought it was odd for you to think that.

    I'm sorry -- it's not a big deal. I probably shouldn't have said anything.

  • No need to apologize. Lets get off that subject. I do thank-you for the kind response. Now lets just keep rockin'.

  • WOOAH WHAT A QUOTE 'sucess is something you do yourself fame is what other people do!

  • cool guy but very camp

  • Ah, those were the days. Love the basement! Dave's awesome as a front man, that's the kind of guy you need. Plus a cool looking guitar player to join you (along with some quality (not over-produced) tunes and you've got classic VH.

  • smarter than he gets credit for

  • Dave is cool=glad he returned...love his

    "Rothisms" too!

  • i used to think it would b so fun to hang out with david lee roth, but i guess not 'cuz now i heard he like never hung out with the fans... kinda burst my bubble :-( o well, still luv Van Halen Muzic, (only wit hroth though)

  • read his autobiography and pump your bubble back up because he goes on and on about how much he actually DID hang out with his fans.

  • Who is the dumbass....learn to spell if you are going to be critical.....ENDEAVOUR !...by the way... and I am English so we kind of invented the language... why are you so hung up on what this man says.... he is funny, perhaps he learns scripts of "funny lines for every occasion", but its funny nevertheless ! Just chill dude !

  • i didn't know the term "intellectual endeavor" was included in "broad vocabulary"... maybe you're just a dumbass?

  • One thing I love about Dave is that he says rock 'n' roll is not an intellectual endeavor, yet it takes someone with intelligence and a broad vocabulary to say that.

  • Gee I wonder where the hair band movement came from? LOL

  • merry men they are!! bombadida!!

  • What the hell happened to Dave`s hair, and face?

  • his hair looks damn cool lol

  • its called ageing

  • after that he takes his nutritional supplements, changes into a set of beige pajamas and drifts off to sleep whilst wearing a headset that pumps buddhist mantras into his ears. oh,..and he would NEVER, EVER, EVER, condescend to have a beer with his fans, or kick it with a regular girl who's not a brazilian supermodel.

  • yep he was A real Know it all----

    yes he was----

  • sad but sounds true

  • daves was right back then and his words would ring truer still today. rock star A leaves the stage, jumps in his 500,000 motor-coach, flips open his laptop and checks his investment portfolio. he opens a bottle of Figi-water, changes into his track suit and jumps on the eliptical machine he has onboard. he then presides over a teleconference with his business manager and an executive of the telecommunications company who wants to use his best music as ringtones on delusional teenagers cellphones

  • "How artistic can you be in a place that sells popcorn and jujubee's?" LMFAO

  • no "incongruity" here. daves a force of nature. and maybe, just maybe, thats why my mom still has a poster of him chained to a fence stashed way back in her closet.

  • dlr is amazingg

  • Although there are different styles today most of the bands today are terrible!!

  • The bands of today suck period. tHE BLACK CROWES, widespread panic, and maybe a couple others will last the long haul, but that is about it. The longevity of the bands from the 60's 70's and 80's is over with and it sucks that it is that way now. Bands now aren't really worth a shit in general.

  • jimmy herring saved WSP's career, but not for long. hopefull he'll get bored of that joke of a group and go back to jazz is dead

  • Dave's a liar. He was older than 25 at the time.

  • Yer right, he woulda been 27.

  • dave should do some audiobooks. i like just listening to him talk its so entertaining.

  • this is classic Diamond Dave at his best, very funny Dave will always be the best for VH in the 80's Dave was the face and the voice of VH eddie didn't want the spotlight dave lived it.DLR was on all the mag covers and everyone wanted to talk to Dave.

  • The Best...all 'wanna be' bands need to study because today the bands that are on top will be forgotten in 2 years...

  • This is the real deal. These shit bands of now a days such as Sum 41 Nickelback and mmmmmm My Chemical Romance have no flare, class, talent, and most of all song writing ability. To these bands I say DIE!!!!!!

  • no shit, ive been sayin the same. todays music is an insult to all the greats like dave. you were a fuckin legend dave. its like we woke up in a nightmare to this new crap music. i say its time to kill some of these head fuckers up at mtv and those bands u mentioned. motherfuckers!

  • agreed

  • This is the best shit. Not this bullshit talk of now a days.Default, NickelBack, Rob Zombie etc. Total crap no style AT ALL!!!!!!

  • the man's profound

  • Hey, is that Dave before all his real hair fell out?

  • It´s Great

    watch my videos

  • TRUE STAR-----A REAL POWERFUL PERSONA

    WEED HEAD TOO lOVE IT

  • Dude, so is that footage a complete video out and about or still in the VH/WB vaults?...demographically speaking...?

  • If you mean the music clips, you can find the full videos on YouTube.
