  • i work out to oldies

  • Man, Italians say "Wop" a good deal in their songs...

  • Which one is Freddy Milano?

  • Comment removed

  • Rest in peace Freddy Milano.

  • btw, Id pay big money for a HD copy of this.....

  • and to think....they were all teenagers, lol!!!

  • These guys have so much swag! Performances like this are rare nowadays. Love the whole ensemble!

  • Awesome!!! Gosh I adore Dion & the Belmonts!

  • Is that Shirley McClain in the audience at the 56 second mark

  • The anthem for white, uptempo, NYC doo wop. Harmony at it's best, great lead, and great combo of bass and falsetto in back. Still one of my favorites.

  • if greedy old penny-pinching skinflint dick clark, finds out you are showing this entire american bandstand, clip he'll either demand its removal from youtube or compensation for the re-telecast. till he does we'll enjoy it however, and thanks....I love it!

  • @TheBabyboomkidof53

Just download it to your hard drive using Realplayer.

Realplayer is available for free. Do google search.

  • Sopranos haha

  • this is New York Doo Wop at its best. and to think they were hanging out at E179 st. and Belmont Av. right here in the Bronx,it blows me away.

  • This sounds like the original studio recording that you hear on the radio.

  • @mikesb69 It is. Theyre panomiming it.

  • @overbrookXXX

We don't care. That's how TV performances were back then.

  • @NewWaveTH Who doesnt care? I do. Id love to see an HD of this too, but doubtful one exists.

  • I bet those people in the crowd would never have thought they'd be watched by thousands on something called youtube

  • @soundsoninir

the girl at 1.18 did. She sang "i wonder when this'll be on youtube", then smiled...

  • A classic

  • sooooo nice!!

  • this is the best DATBs clip I've ever seen...it's IFFIC!!

  • wow!!!!!!!!!! It is live!!

  • Now You's cant' Leave!!!

  • @99proteinshake Nice reference to A Bronx Tale... a truly great movie.

  • first time i seen this,i thank u doowop rick,fkin awesome

  • Lot of gum chewers...

  • @GinoAtlanta The show was sponsored by Beechnut Chewing Gum, they would hand-out tons of the stuff as the kids entered the studio.

  • Opening song from the movie "A Bronx Tale" with Robert DeNiro (1994)

  • they were paid to clap

  • @matthewcolston5 you sound like a real intelligent person, lol

  • Audience doesn't seem to be having much fun :(

  • Funny thing though is - the term "Doo Wop" wasn´t coined until a dj said it in 1968, long time after its heydays.

  • Quality performance from Fred, and the guys.

This appearance is from 'Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beechnut Show', the 'IFIC' badges are the giveaway.

    Thanks, Fred, God bless you.

  • R.I.P Fred

now you can take cool to another level.......never forgoton

  • RIP FRED.........KEEP DOO WOOPING IN THE PEARLY GATES

  • R.I.P. Fred Milano.

  • Can't beat this stuff. I was fortunate to have grown up during this era and many years later work on Fordham Road in the Bronx near the Belmont neighborhood where Dion and his friends made their home.

  • Freddie Milano (August 22, 1939-January 1, 2012). There is a nice tribute to Freddie on The Belmonts' official website and also on Dion's Facebook page.

  • So lucky, I got to grow up then..........

  • Rest in Peace cousin Freddie

  • Excellent in all aspects....the best....ra

  • Jimi Goodwin of Atmospheric Rock Group "the doves" loves Dion

  • My 10 year old son and I play all these classics every Sat afternoon on our local Radio Station...great era..

  • Notice the bubblegum "IFIC" buttons? Terrific used to mean like filled with terror. So they used the slogan flavorific for their bubble gum and on American bandstand the kids would wear these buttons because the show was sponsored by a bubble gum company. Now who knows who the bubble gum company was?

  • the brunette behind the at 1:29 is beautiful. I wish this was the 50's

  • @kingjeef It is.. best part in the song.

  • This is a very rare version. Dion and the Belmonts have to be the royalty of doo wop.

  • i feel sorry for the people whos so old now

  • I Wish There was A Big Juke Box In The Sky That Would Play This Music All Day Across The World. Man That Would Be Heaven

  • @sheertowaistlover Yeah that would be heaven! Because did u know in heaven, music plays constantly! Im pretty young and the only person i know who listens to this kind of music. Dion and the Belmonts are my favorate!

  • Some great ginzos here that lived on Belmont Ave. in the Bronx,New York around the corner from where I grew up on Author Ave.

  • The guy on the right reminds me of Ross from Friends for some reason

  • Christine anyone ?? :-) Great song :-)

  • Wikipedia said it, not me, Doo wop first came on the scene through Blacks and Italians. In my opinion the most interesting two heritages in America. I'm pretty sure there have been more movies, tv shows and books written about both.

  • always see Harriet since the 60's- tell her in MA now! Love

  • Somebody go into the audiance and show them white kids how to clap on the same beat.lol

  • Rythmn is Total out of the window here.hahahahaha

  • Well I don't think the Temptation got anything to worry about.lol, White boys show look dorky trying to dance and sing like black folks. lol. Doo Wop, hell no, thats Doo Flop. If you want to hear real Do Wop, I am sorry white people you have to go to the Originators of it, Black Americans.

  • @cocoman191 Your fucking crazy. Im black and i love the motown era but your smoking if you say that Dion wasnt one of the greats of do wop. This dude invented swag. His steps where on point and the belmonts where on point. Do flop? Take your racist ass somwhere else. Dion is a legend period. Music is not about color. Its in everybody and they guys deff had soul

  • @jago397 ^^^THIS

  • @jago397

    very well put!

if you love music, you love it all!

  • Clapping on the 1/3 -- nobody has any rhythm. You clap on the 2/4, people!

  • I thought Cliff Richard and The Shads invented the Shadow shuffle but Dion did it first.

  • This is what I call music!! Brilliant!

  • It's called talent kids, get it?

  • That has to be a young shriley McClain at :53

  • Loved the dance moves!!!

  • I wish I was born in the 50's because nowadays music is really bad compare with this!

  • DION IS SOOOOOOOOOO UNDERRATED. nuff said

  • Come on Christine!

  • Christine

  • bronx national anthem

  • Anybody else commented on how many of the audience were chewing gum - nothing changes, eh?

  • @austerlitz9 The show was sponsored by Beech Nut Spearmint Gum, and all of the audience was given a pack of gum as they entered the studio. The advertising slogan for the gum was "It's Flavorific", which is why the kids all have a button that reads "IFIC" on it.

  • @MrBadgerFan Thanks for that - I remember Beech Nut chewing gum w-a-y back.

  • REAL DOO WOP PEOPLE!!!!

  • This is one of my all time favorite song and I can remember dancing at sox hops to this great song!

  • Watch this and then watch the Temptations...Lol. The Temps DID this, even tho they came along a bit later. Sorry kids.....you can't pull this off.

  • @6000cat still like the way dion and the belmonts do it the best.......youre lost in the wrong neighborhood. LOL

  • NICE!

  • Back then the audience actually dressed in their best clothes to see concerts, you wont't see that on American IDOL or Who's Got Talent!!! Then the late 1960's came along and fashion in my humble opinion became sheer ugliness until the 1970's ended!!!!

  • I wonder what those IFIC Buttons mean?

  • was chewing gum invented in the 50's?

  • no words for the greatness of this clip

  • Those are some sharp vines they're sporting, too...

  • Man, some of those brods in the audience must have been last in line in the looks department.

  • u can turn off tha base without changing tha pitch of the song..today drop tha bass n u don even hear music..

  • Dion resembles Paul McCartney

  • you had to have a voice to sing like this, so cool

  • An original american art form, unique to the eastern seaboard; NYC and Philly mostly. Beach Boys cashed in copying it. I miss WOGL Philadelphia's Street Corner Sunday Nights!

  • @crifoter69 Doo Wop rules!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is a classic. Only wish Dion would still sing it like this. Great Post Thanks

  • This is the way it was. Doo Wop at it's best.

  • Paizon pride with this group!

  • @volcanicaction That would be NY Paisans!!

  • A BRONX TALE!!! LOVE THAT DOO WOP!!!!

  • @borednesslife

    Looks like Plymouth Belvedere/Fury '58 :)

  • I was only 8 years old when this was released, but I still identify more with the '50s and early '60s hits than any other time period up to now. I could listen to these oldies every day and never get tired of them. Thanks for posting this great old clip from Dick Clark's American Bandstand.

  • It really doesn't get any better than this. Seriously. If you don't like doo wop you don't like rock n' roll and I don't like you!

  • great song.. this song reminds me of sopranos in the first episode when they are chasing that guy down in the car.. wish I grew up in the 50s

  • Now THIS is what I call Classic Rock! Doo wop 4ever! Dion is the Greatest!

  • sweetest song ever!!

my Granny used to look just like one of those girls in the crowd! ...or even cuter :-P

  • Where's all those teen boys like Dion? Oh gosh. Look at all the teen idols from the 50's-70's, now look at teens idols from the present. All garbage with no talent and can't sing. They're just in it to win it, ugh.

  • Why does everyone look so bored!!! Come on, now elderly people!!!!

  • great video

  • that girl who is shouting to someone else rather drooling/lidtrning to dion is/was an idiot.

  • Dion could sing like crazy, hes 19 here

  • They could dress back than boy

  • If you examine the grooves on this 45, you can literally discern pin hole like perforations in the spots corresponding to Carlo's jackhammer stacotto voice....amazing....

  • @sohowsaboutit

We need more music like this---NOW!!

  • 1:29 that's the look of rape

And back then no one sang wahhhhhhhhh what about meeeeee

  • I always like watching these nostalgic American bandstand videos. They are really cool.Is there anyone out there that was actually in the audience at this particular performance? What was it like? If so, please respond on here or to my account. Also interested in anyone who was in the performance of Danny and the juniors "Rock and roll is here to stay" on American bandstand early years also on here you tube. I just think these original performaces are really cool.

  • 2 months ago I mentioned 5 dislikes, it's up to 8. DIAF haters. :)

  • I first heard this song in Christine, so whenever I hear it, i think of that scene and I get Chills down my body.

  • I freakin' love this damn song so damn much!

  • Love this track - And now we all know where Carlton learnt his dance moves for Fresh Prince of Bel Air

  • Thanks DoowopRick. You are the man!!! These are my favorite groups of all time. Awesome!!!

  • When he first comes out of the line up and sings "I wonder whyyy.." The way he shakes his head is so adorable. I want to jump his bones

  • Dion looks great. Oh Dion ***sigh**** I wish the camera didn't go to that stupid girl at 1:27 for a long time, like it cut into the whole line up hand gestures part. They all looked pretty tight up there.

  • OMG!!! Look at his eyebrows. I know I am strange but took one look and fell so in lust. Just take one look and you will see what I mean. I' m not crazy folk (or am I? hmmm)

  • @meezerlover1 you´re right, dion eyes look brow :P

  • @MilkerBarba brown*

  • I was born in the wrong era! i love this!

  • I wonder why 6 people can dislike this

  • @senseit2007 Maybe they all got the crap beaten outta them with stickball bats. lol

  • @senseit2007 I think those people are slow

  • @senseit2007 Is It beeeecause...they're lipsyncin? lol jk

  • Dion was really a terrific singer, with the Belmonts or later after he'd kinda blown 'em off and headed out on his own. In 1958 I was 11 years old and watching Dick Clark's Philly version of American Bandstand every weekday. Geez, it was so much fun to be alive and conscious during this period of music.

    Eh?

  • im 14 and mt friends make fun of me 4 liking this song but i could care less cuz this a great song

  • @jamesvargas1980 sorry not mt *me

  • @SuperAram111 better beer?

  • At 58 sec mark... is that shirley mc clane???? yes it is.....

  • @larry666ize No, it is not actress Shirley McLaine, but there is a strong resemblance. Shirley was 24 years old in 1958 when this song hit #22 on Billboard's Hot 100.

  • @larry666ize who exactly is that?

  • He makes me wanna listen 2 this song n rock my blazer jacket in the front the computer!..

  • Thumbs up for A Bronx tale

  • Grew up on the block when Dion hit with this....the boys were right down the street on Belmont near 179th st. and went to school with Dion's sis...what a time...stickball...punch ball pitching in...pillows in the windows as moms watched their kids play and get some air...yep...loved it

  • how in the world can anyone dislike this?!!!!!
