@ninjamex89 Pre-cat disintegration will ruin the cylinder walls and piston rings. If out of warranty, it is cheaper to replace the engine (and remove/replace bad pre-cat) than it is to repair. Salvage yards should have plenty of QR25DE's.
Why didnt nissan just put the SR20DE in them, SR20DE is like the most reliable 4 cylinder engine mine has done over 245,000 on it withought ANY problems at all, not even minor ones in its entire life and i dont look after it as much as I red line it sometimes.
Mine is burning ... The dealer who I bought it from is dishonest though. They claimed to have rebuilt the engine but two days after getting it back the engine started burning oil again. Anyone have a QR25 for sale ?
@Wentz7z Buy a SR20DE, they will cost around the same and are extremly reliable, i dont know about the US but here in Australia they are very common and easy to find. It should fit in the car, youll just need new engine mounts and possibly transmission.
wow and I thought my single cam ka is burning oil hahah not nearly as much smoke as that and it has 330 000 km + its 20 years old. I guess thats what you get when you buy a nissan made in mexico, hell even the nissans made in america are not the best, my mom has a 2000 altima (ka24de) and my bro has a maxima (Vq30de made in japan :)) the max is more reliable and solid a much better car.
I'm guessing this is Nissans crappy 2.5? I heard alot of bad things about these motors. didn't know they put them in Sentras. Did Nissan pay for another 2.5 or another motor?
Can someone pliz explain what the pre-cat means, i suck at mechanics so pliz explain. I wanna make sure my spec v doenst get the samme prob or at least prevent it. Ty =)
@Iceman187homicide This vehicle (and many others) has 2 catalytic converters in the exhaust system. One is under the center of the car (like nearly all vehicles from the last several decades) which is the main "cat" converter. The other is before it, integrated into the exhaust manifold... "pre-cat." If you own a QR25DE, safest bet is to replace the exhaust manifold/pre-cat assembly with a cat-less header.
@Matt95GT I have a Hyundai Accent hatchback 2010 and I also have 2 cats... I wanted to buy a catless colector BUT I have a sensor placed right after my "precat" so my engine will probably not work properly without the first cat.. what do you think? :(
@JeyOmatix Only the primary O2 sensor is used for closed-loop fuel injection. Post-cat O2 sensors are only for cat/emission verification - a removed cat will set codes, but engine will run fine. To resolve, search google/ebay for "o2 sensor sim" - I'm using a "ghetto sim" aka spark-plug de-fouler, installed between my secondary O2 sensor and the bung in my pre-cat-less header.
dam it looks like you have the spame problem as me my smoke was not to dark like yours and it was caused by the o rings being warn out 3554.86 is wat it was going to cost to fix it but i just dropped a new engine for 1300.00 and runs great now good luck man!
Hard to see the blue color in the video, but it was definitely oil. My own compression tests pointed to ring failure initiated by pre-cat contamination, oil level dropped steadily, coolant level did not change. Nissan reached the same conclusion (borescope pre-cat via O2 sensor hole) and replaced the engine per 8year/80K mile federal emissions warranty.
You must have really had cooked cylinder walls, then. I've seen cars burning oil, but that was one hell of a cloud. Glad to hear Nissan took care of it for you. Fortunately I got a Megan Racing header as soon as I found out about the issue with the pre-cat.
No doubt the cylinder walls were trashed. On the trip limping to the dealer, it was knocking nicely too. I've seen a few videos of the QR25 apart after this issue, and some of them had walls worn so bad that the piston could be rocked back and forth by hand. As for the header, ironically I was already paid and on the group buy waiting list for the XS Power basic header. It arrived 1 week after this video was taken.
I have a 2002 Sentra, same problem. Is it true that the failure of a componet like the pre-cat, covered under the federal emissions warranty will force nissan to replace parts ruined by the covered component. IE Motor that is not covered by the same warranty???
Yes. That was the exact situation/outcome of this car - powertrain warranty expired 6 months prior to failure, but was within 8yr/80K miles federal emissions warranty. The dealer agreed with my conclusion that the pre-cat defect caused the engine failure, so Nissan USA had to pick up the tab for a new replacement engine and pre-cat. The trick is finding a competent dealer service dept will to work with you. I struck out twice, but the 3rd dealer was willing to hear me out.
this just happened to me. my ses light came on and then my oil level light shortly after. it burned thru a tank in a matter of miles and it seized up. now its waiting to be towed to the dealership and it will get its new heart:).
Thats exactly what my 02 Altima does

@REPOMAN24722
And you have to rewire it, along with a new ECU among other things. They don't just drop in.

@daboogersniffa Still, it will be bettern than the QR25DE

Ummm, I don't think that was oil burning, too white and puffy. My vote is coolant burning caused by a bad head gasket.
