Ata was the Man! They called this music 'exotica'... but make no mistake, Ata was Hawaiian to the bone and so good fun to be around... miss him and his easy going smile.
Thank you so so much for the reminder of a wonderful, beautiful, and peaceful era gone by. As a young marine in 1957, I laid in my barracks playing this music on my hi fi and just relaxed and dreamed of beautiful island scenes. Thanks so much for sharing. Ole Johnny B.
@goodtogonow3 Its actually a Haitian song written in 1893 called "Choucoune". The English lyrics are unrelated to the original. The first to record the English version was the Norman Luboff Choir, followed by the Mills Brothers.
One of my earliest childhood memories was of this very song. I remember wanting my mother to put it on the record player over and over again. There was something about it. It soothed me, but at the same time made me feel so melancholy! Ah, memories!
@LittleSweety Thanks for appreciating the history! Last April, I met the man who put the Marcels' 'Blue Moon' on the charts 3 months before this!! The Vibraphone is a magic instrument & Arthur Lyman was truly the master of it. Come check out my 750 playlists. Among the 450 artists is a list for Arthur Lyman. Within my 100 genre lists, this is on my Marimba & Vibe Favorites & added this to my 1961 playlist - I've got lists for every year since 1900. Thx to futykootz for the outstanding music
I went to see Arthur Lyman just after I had my son in 1965. It was held in Riverside, CA, but forgot which dinner house it was. I was really sick that night and we were booked for the second show of the evening. The first show ran over and we didn't get into the show until after 9:00p.m. By the intermission I had to leave as I was running 104 degree temperature caused by an infection from nursing my son. Would like to have seen it again, but didn't get the chance.
I remember this being used by Northeast Airlines as its commercial jingle.

I remember my dad playing this when I was knee high to a grasshopper. God bless my dad who is no longer with me.

"Yellow Bird" is a Haitian song. It was written by a Haitian poet called Oswald Durand.
Google "The Story of Choucoune Stolen Legacy" and you will find more about the song
