Martens are like seals, their cute little faces are deceptive. I'm surrounded by Martens all winter, I'd rather run into a bear any day! They can incredibly fierce, like wolverines.
I have a pine marten living up in my attic for more then a year now, he is beautiful but the poo presents arent!! he kind of scares me with those claws though
I have a pine marten in my attic, he is there with over a year, Im a bit nervous of him to be honest, its the claws, they're huge! Im just back from walking my dog and I saw one climbing up the wall of my neighbours timber shed, Im starting to think Im living in a Pine Marten reservation
What a beautiful creature. Are they related to mink/stoats/weasels and the like? Just wondering since they don't seem to have long body and short legs which is typical of most mustelids. It has longer legs and more of a cat-like shape.
@scaramangaix We do have them stateside, infact the are largeenough populations in Main,NH and the northern rockies that they are considered a furbearer. Here i VT they are here but not in enough numbers to be trapped.
So beautiful .............................................. Btw, those are pretty dangerous, they won't kill you but they can bite like a bitch. We used to have a pet marten, a house marten though, and as it matured it became seriously violent - In the end it had to be put down. - To prevent the "omfg you should've set it free!"; We had it for several years, and got it as a very young marten, so we couldn't let it go into the wild, as it wouldn't know how to survive.
These things are pretty evil... the first night I slept in my house use in Germany they were having a royal rumble on the roof, growling and chattering... it felt like i was in the movie paranormal activity because I had no idea what they are. They eat spark plug wires in your car and kill all small animals, chickens, rabbits, cats, could probably take out a small dog. We have a cat in our neighborhood with one eye... weasels try to strike at the eyes. Who needs em. Definitely not cute.
Really good footage you got there he seems very tame, he must be used to people living in that house, i've lived 30 miles from loch ness all my life and have never seen a wild one they are so timid and reclusive.
We have American pine martens which are identical to the Eurasian pine marten above along with the Russian sable, all members of the weasel family Mustelidae, and all highly prized furbearers, hence, their scarcity... People have been trying to start sable farms for years, with limited success. Like the fox and mink, atleast the fur farms would protect the wild population of martens.
aww, i just read a novel (where the time period was 1277) & the leading man had a marten as a pet :) this video is wonderful! i didn't exactly know what a marten looked like, but my imagination was just about right! they are truly beautiful :)
i saw a pine marten around 2007.i live in wiltshire uk,and i saw one whilst out on my mountainbike,i couldn't believe it but i swear i am telling the truth.dark chocolate fur, cream white underfur that stops halfway down it's body, around 16 " long.i was well chuffed seeing it!!!
Maybe you saw a stone marten. The white colour would suggest that (pine marten have yellow throats as you can see here). These little guys are common in urban and semi-urban areas. I've even seen some in the central square of a city with 150 000 inhabitants. There was an abandoned house in our suburban street and the garden terrace was full with their droppings. They even invade attics on occasions.
What a gorgeous creature - looks like a young one? And I can hear goldfinch in the background, i'll bet it's a wonderful spot for nature watching! We're always looking out for wee self catering places in the middle of no-where and this looks great! will def check it out.
We have lots of them in Istanbul of all places. They are *not* well-tempered, they have pretty wicked fights at night. But they are interesting animals to have around. When they don't leave little marten piles on our entryway. ;)
That is some quality footage of an adorable creature, well done!

What a handsome devil!
Unusual to see such a notoriously wary predator come so close to humans.
If you have a rodent problem at all, he will tidy it up in a hurry.
