Mariah is the only one who does it with so much control and finesse and truly makes it sound effortless. Everyone else (especially the guy) sounds forced and a little wobbly,whereas Mariah can even do runs and sing words in her whistle register. Don't get me wrong, this is a very special feat for anyone to accomplish, but if can be done practically on demand in studio or live, and with impeccable style, then perhaps Mariah could have some competition. Until then she rules.

Leona's voice in general is very high and light, therefor the X-factor performance to me did not sound like a true whistle note but rather a very high Falsetto. Christina is very well capable of Utilizing her Whistle however she fails to do so Live, just as she fails to hit many of her famous notes. She however is still a good performer and singer in general. Mariah...no comment needed. Adam Lopez is just confounding with his voice. Georgia has no flexibility with her whistle. Minnie...amazing.

Your first example, Leona Lewis, has only few examples, she's quite rare to do it, and I think the 2nd clip, from X Factor, isn't whistle (only my opinion, and I'm not an expert)...

Whistle notes are great done once maybe twice a concert.. But when it's done in every freaking song and performance like Mariah, it gets super annoying! Besides.. Belting high notes is more impressive and better sounding than whistle. P.S. Mariah lip synchs most of her whistles today and she has lost her ability to sustain a high, beltet note.

It's misleading to say that all notes past Eb6 are whistles, some dramatic/lyric sopranos head voice can extend to G6, and MC has whistled out D6's.

it did not come from wikipedians.. its been in part of the four vocal registrars since mozart, according to my vocal pedagogy book. and its not necessarily e6, because some men have whistle tones in replacement of falsetto, so their whistle tone could start earlier. Mariah Carey is a good example, but you should check out some classical recordings, especially of boy choirs.

@01seepee10 castrated is a process that use to be done to boys during puberty so their voices don't brake. I can do whistle notes and I'm not castrated. I am told I hit C9 but my whistle notes are sometimes a bit thin. I also haven't had any vocal training and sing through my nose. Check out my channel for these whistle notes. The flexibility of pop music means that artists like Mariah Carey are able to records songs with higher notes than classical sopranos.

But simply being able to sing higher is certainly not a good measure of skill. And opera singers are by far much better technical singers than pop singers today.
