There's a difference between saying not taking non-muslims as friends full stop and not taking them as friends in preference to believers. Anyone who understands language would see this. If I said the exact phrase - I would never take someone as a friend in preference to a family member - then the vast majority of people would not understand this to mean I wouldn't take ever take a non-family member as a friend. Adding - in preference - changes the whole meaning of the sentence.

There's a difference between saying not taking non-muslims as friends full stop and not taking them as friends in preference to believers. Anyone who understands language would see this. If I said the exact phrase - I would never take someone as a friend in preference to a family member - then the vast majority of people would not understand this to mean I wouldn't take ever take a non-family member as a friend. Adding - in preference - changes the whole meaning of the sentence.

I have no problem with the Qur'an telling Muslims to not take non-Muslims as friends. The "Book" (that makes "People of the Book") asks the rhetorical question "what hath light with darkness"? And, tells Christians to come out from those who preach differently. But, as far as I can tell, there is no place in the "Book" that tells Christians to only ACT like they are friends of non-Christians or be cut off from God if they really mean to take them as friends.

Lincoln is hailed as a legend nowadays, but he didn't think blacks deserved the same equality as whites. People's views change, you have to look at them in the context of their societies and times.
