A finite resource like oil cannot grow in comsumption forever. The amount of unconventional oil available is really huge but much more viscous than conventional oil which means it will take more time and energy (heat) to lift it from the ground. Besides that even an extra amount of energy is needed to make it consumable.
The day will come when modern fossile fueled civilization must crash because of exponential energy consumption growth and resource depletion. It's only a question of time...
