I remember flying on a National 747 from JFK to Miami in the early 70's. Less than a half full plane, a hot meal and WIDEBODY domestic service. Thanks to jimmy carter flying has become greyhound in the terminals and in the sky. Good God. Every time I have to fly now I thank him sarcastically under my breadth at check in!!!!!!!!
Hello. I see your point, but I believe one should also consider how cheaper is flying today, compared to 30 years ago or more. Usually a pro has its con...
I am a former stewardess for National Airlines, and was proud to fly for such a great airline. After the merger with PanAm, I went into the travel industry until 9/11. Does anyone know of anything in the travel business that I could get into now? I truly love that business, and am a great people person. I am now unemployed. Ugh! My plane said Cyn on the tail. I was the fly Cyn, fly me.
I remember a reference to this in an old Doonesbury, with a couple of feminists watching a commercial in which a stewardess says, "I'm Cheryl. Fly Me." I didn't realize it was referencing a real commercial, although of course that makes sense.
These were great commercials and they exploited the whole stewardess mystic of the late 60s and early 70s as "sluts in the sky". However, the greatest airline to exploit this was San Diego-based PSA that in the late 60s had their flight attendents wearing miniskirts and go-go boots. Check out some of the retro PSA websites they have a lot of archived photos of these "uniforms".
Though the "fly me" campaign is seen as sexist, it was so influential in building the image of flight attendants as these otherworldly creatures that, as a result I was always disappointed that Charlton Heston wouldn't let Karen Black land the 747 in Airport 1975; she'd kept the damn thing aloft for so long he should have let her finish the job. Here's to National for creating a world it seems fewer and fewer remember: where flight attendants were stewardesses and could do almost anything.
Not that anyone cares...but one of my most prized airline souviners is a pinback button that I got from National Airlines...it has a space on it for you to write your own name...thus my pinback button sez...IM BRIAN...FLY ME...FLY NATIONAL...Have any of you seen the videos like this of Cybil Sheppard...she was one of the girls in the FLY ME commercials.
National Airlines was Florida's Airline. Their coverage throughout the state was the very best. Go practically anywhere in Florida from Miami in full size jets. No flying past your city to a hub and then double backing to your desired destination. PanAm put a stop to all of that service when they gobbled up National and began closing most Florida cities. What a shame. PanAm has gone bye bye.
Since I worked as a stewardess for this wonderful airline in the 60's and 70's I must object to anyone thinking that we are in nursing homes! Our CEO was brilliant hiring an ad agency that came up with the slogan "Fly Me" I have a web site on our airline and will be placing a very old video of our commercials in the next few months. Remember that decade was all about selling the stewardess with the airline and it worked. Our airline was small but 7th in the nation.
Thank you, wish I could get my hands on all the other variations and girls of this classic campaign. It is so stylish, makes me want to go to Miami just so I can fly Maggie's two 747's to New York :)
Do a google search for National Airlines Sundowners...they have a website and on their website they have a video for sale that has several other FLY ME commercials on it...including Cybil Sheppard...but please please please...if you do decide to purchase their video...do the right thing...honor their request and DO NOT copy... share or post online any of the video.

You have to give it to them, they're efficient. I wish all commercials could be this short.

I'm a translator student. And I have this commercial as an assignment. Would sb say that the language used in there is formal or pseudo-formal?

I believe there was a Women's Rights Protest, one of the protestants had a Sign that said "Go Fly yourself, National".

I believe this commercial was the inspiration for the 'I'm Mandy, Fly Me' song by 10cc.

What a turd of an airline. I still think the merge with Pan Am helped kill P.A.A.

Maggie and fellow "Fly Me" stewardess Cheryl couldn't save National. 37 years later, I wonder how they feel about this ad.

I was hoping for the best with that merger
and Pan Am ripped apart National. All Pan
Am wanted was their Miami to europe routes.
Deregulation made the skies more hostile
had something to do with it.I think National
and Texas International would have been good
it would make National a larger carrier.
Now I am giving Frank Lorenzo credit,Not Good.
