The zoom sounds better here but the tascam sounded better on every other test ive heard. I think here its because of the mic placement. The guitar is too close to the tascam and the mics, which face away from eachother, leave a small gap in the middle, thus loosing resonance and thinning out the guitars full tone.
Both are very good, it depends on if you want louder sounds (tascam) or brigther (zoom). I have the Tascam DR08 and i'm very impressed with the quality, it records very good the clarinet (a very difficult instrument to record), the saxphone and my voice.
i think the tascam sounds better... its only 99 bucks at sweetwater right now. the out of tune guitar makes it harder to decide which sounds better tho
@WinterSonataSounds tascam is studio quality and a much better audio recorder all round. id say this video is pretty much biased other sound tests ive seen show the tascam has much clearer sound quality in field recording
@triggerdance did you listen to the sample? the tascam sounds compressed. either the audio samples have been treated in different ways (i assume not) or the tascam sucks
you can record mp3 live file at high quality on air or from the cable - you can manually adjust the gain or make it totally automatic so it is more difficult to make mistakes and you can do all that not from a hard menu but from the outsided buttons and this is fantastic - go away hard digital menù I don't like them where you hav to change pages with little one buttons where it is hard to come bak or to find the page again in a second moment while with H1 you makes every thing with no dig. menù
yes it is and you can record not only on air but also with jack from guitar to the h1 mic imput hole and listen it amplified with headphone You can do almost everything with this little cheap and easy to use mic - I have bought two H1 zoom mic and a H2 zoom and the quality result is almost the same - but the H1 cost 99 euros while the H2 190 euros and when you record with H2 zoom you must press twice the red button to start recording and it could happens you forget to press twice and hard menù
Zoom has a better time picking up on bass and treble, the Tascam has too much treble and almost no bass, and I agree with RickFreeloader, tune the guitar dude.
Close your eyes and keep replaying a part where the DR-08 is being used. Then do the same thing only on a part where the Zoom is being used. You should hear every string being strung on the guitar when the DR-08 is being used, where as the Zoom seems to muffle or mute all the other stings except the strings being fretted. The DR-08 might sound a bit more hollow rather than warm and chunky like the Zoom but the DR-08 is more clear. The audio settings can always be edited via computer software.
@Lucifer9387 However, this is my opinion, Everybody has their own. That's why there's more than just one manufacturer. I'm merely suggesting to those who can't decide, to "listen" before finalizing their conclusion.
Hmmm.... both were better than I expected. Through good headphones on 720p it sounded like the stereo separation on the Tascam is wider, or perhaps there is a bump in the 200-400hz range on the Zoom... (sounded boxy) or maybe a little of both. It just seemed like I was more "in" the music with the Tascam. Sometimes that's EQ and sometimes that's channel separation... tough to tell without doing histograms. Both were nice though... I'm still not sure which I'll get for quick recordings. Thanks.
Obviously this is not what the comparison is about, but could you tell me what camera was used for this video? It's so crisp and clear, it looks great!
@ToyArtz I have a life, asking someone to play in tune is not trolling. You should also tell the 29 people that liked my comment to get a life ~ those aren't 29 accounts of mine.
The Zoom sounds better, but I wonder if this is like the Panasonic vs. Canon debate in pro cameras. Could it be that the H1 has better out-of-box sound, while the Tascam needs to be tweaked alot to achieve even better sound?
@djcondra ... hmmm Just listened to the 2 wav files on the blog, and the Zoom sounds much better to me in every way (in that comparison anyway). Shame you did your recording in what sounds like a bathroom, but thanks for taking the time to do it anyway.
@djcondra NO offense, smileface at the end meens that this was just funny to see you talking to yourself. i didn't want to offend you, sorry about that. :D

I think the samples have a great differenz, feels like a muddier tascam and a higher zoom, you should take both and layer the sounds afterwards :D

@ConnorMerrisonTV "muffled", well said!

You know what a good test would be?
Take an arranger keyboard with built-in speakers and record it with the Zoom H1 mics.
THEN connect the keyboard to line in on the Zoom and record that as well.
Repeat with the Tascam.

YES i made the right choice of buying the ZOOM H1.
My friend wanted to get the Tascam but good thing Zoom released the HI in time to order it xD
Thank you so much for the comparison =D
AgustinJR24 1 year ago
The Zoom all the way. It's warmer and sounds more like the acoustic is less interfered with by the surrounding environment.
121jigawatts 1 year ago
Zoom H1 sounds brighter, wider, and more upfront to me. Tascam sounds "warmer". Both offer incredible sound considering the price points.
