Hey mate, may have fixed this by now, but if you look at the likes of powell and bolt you'll notice their back foot is almost dragging along the ground out of the blocks. If you could get rid of the cycling around and up near your bum with your back legs and keep them low while driving forward you'll save a lot of time. Otherwise, great start!
@mcneumz apparently you've never heard of Tom Tellez, Dan Pfaff, Vince Anderson, Pat Henry.....list goes on. Also the fact that one of the best sprinters in the world is a 21 year old white guy right now. And your point is again?
@mcneumz speed has nothing to do with techniqe, neither does color there is only 1 race in this world its called HUMAN RACE u handicap the best sprinters in the world such as tyson gay etc they all have white trainers man dont be racist!!!! wheter u get faster or not depends on your bodies capability of development not white ppl training u!!!!! lighten up for gods sake
I noticed that your first push (from the blocks) was good and propelled you forward nicely however when your left leg landed and pushed for the first time it didn't seem to do much.
I noticed that your initial push out of the blocks was very strong, but there was something wrong with your next few steps and this threw off your drive phase. You looked bent over at the waist in order to stay low and that is killing your start. I'm not a coach, but I believe this can be fixed by having a training partner hold a resistance band around your waist and have you practice exploding out of the blocks. The resistance band slows the motion down and forces correct technique.
great start! my coach makes a point of slowly raising your head out of the blocks instead of coming straight up, that way, you keep a lot of power, and if i'm correct, i saw you do that
what's up with all the 13-year-old kids talking here :D
i like your start. i'm at the moment looking to improve my start, i'm always one of the last to get off the blocks :( My PB is 11.23. There's a video of 4x100m relay in my favorites, where i run the last leg (red shirt and shit). Still at recovery phase from thigh injuries.
@ZOso319 stfu i'm white and i don't train much. :D actually i can run under 11 secs too, but my leg is fucked. starting my trainings next week again (haven't done so for half a year...)
Great initial start with the right leg out of the blocks, but continuing to drive with you left leg will keep you lower throughout your "drive-phase" until you are fully upright. A bit of lifting (squats/lounges) will take care of that imbalance. Good luck!
No longer relevant due to being an old video, but his 2nd and 3rd steps were a little off (incomplete extension) because his first step was too long. Lower ground clearance in the first couple steps the start will help this problem (keeping feet closer to track). His foot landed too far in front of his C.O.M. for the angle he was at to get an effective push, so he had to shorten it before getting back into a nice acceleration. Great extension after recovering from the hiccup though!
keeping your feet "lower" to the track is an ambiguous term, if you try to focus on that, then over rotating would occur keeping you out of an effective drive.....
@Trabuco34 Your start looks beautiful.. I really can't think of anything to critique it on (I'm a football player, first year in track). Working on my start right now.. My 100m is at 11.85 and I think I can get it down to 11.79. I also just realized this video is 4 years old. But in one of your other vids you run at Macomb CC. Do you run track for them. I live in Michigan as well.
@guitarin1993 really?? didnt know that.. next track season i hope to be in the 11.4s.. then senior year 11.2. i havent trained for track much at all in my life so hopefully.
HEY! I know where this is. This is Michigan State University. I run there every year for the true team invitational and I am going to school there next year.
No it doesn't, when you move your arm back that far, it causes your opposite leg to go out further, which means your next step will be further out there.
i'm having a hard time running low out of the blocks and not tripping myself up. it feels very awkward, but from watching videos of myself it seems that i pop up right away and thats bad i think
why smaller first step? the best sprinters have incredibly long first steps. Powells trainer says this about starting: - Long, longer and even longer.
the front foot should be 1.5x of your foot size behind the starting line. and you'll get the position of the rear foot when you kneel...your knee should be right beside your front foot. (so sorry my english is bad, i hope it helps)

It seems you have a weaker left leg.. its a good start, but maybe you should work on your left leg when doing your strentgh training abit more, since you don't seem to strecht it out completly, and it costs you time. Good luck :)
ironic, i search for "block start" cause my little cousin wants help with his start, and Jenison Fieldhouse is the first thing that pops up. I'm there every day, I run for MSU.
your explosion was amazing and you definitely pushed off the back blocks. make sure you stay low for about 20 meters (drive face) before you go into you acceleration stage.
ur first step was the shit...then ur second step sucked then u started extra striding...idk if thats how u usually run but it looked like u were doin too much...and u came up really fast...and u should learn to slowly move up and straighten ur abck....ur arms were moving very well...all in all ok starts...what are ur times?

PowerSprinter 2 years ago
why smaller first step? the best sprinters have incredibly long first steps. Powells trainer says this about starting: - Long, longer and even longer.
cornx12 2 years ago
the term "long" is relative. so even by what he said, the first step is the shortest
the reasoning that overstriding the first step is very bad is that it straightens the runner up and prevents the runner from staying low.
and if the athlete cant stay low in his drive phae, then he cant get power from diggng in the ground.
he essentially doesnt have his feet under himself
PowerSprinter 2 years ago
your knees are dropping too much before u push off the blocks. u lose time that way
