What can you say about the overall experience of having a 2ZZ MR-S? Would you recommend it to someone interested in a compact roadster for canyon and track use? Did the maintenance & reliability end up being better/worse than expected? Was it incomparable as a pure driving experience or are there other cost-effective solutions you are aware of that would be wiser routes?
I was VERY close to picking up an MR2 and giving it the 2ZZ treatment, and sometimes still think about it.
The 2zz should have been in the MR-S from Factory.
Maintenance and Reliability are up to you, just take care of the normal stuff and you will be fine.
With my 2zz 6 speed swap I was getting right at 40mpg on the highway.
Most cost effective way to go about it is to buy one that is already swapped. I picked mine up for $15k back in 2007 and it would have cost me $20k+ to find a stock one and swap all the parts it had on it.
mr-s are the shit, if you have the right engine and if you keep N/A, they have allot of potential being lightwieght. impressive that it kept up with a turbo'd car

im not to suprised. its called power to weight ratio. the mr-s are light as a feather. not to mention next to awd cars mid engine cars have awesome grip at drag launches. the mr-s is a better car all around for motorsports, srt-4's are still fast.

1zz-fe is the stock engine in the MR2 MK3's. The 2zz-ge is a high reving performance engine. The head is designed by Yamaha (as almost all Toyota's performance engines). Stock the 1zz makes 140 hp to the flywhell, while the 2zz has 180hp stock. They have almost the same power curve until 6000-6500 rpm's, when the lift activates. The 1zz is developed mainly for everyday driving (who the hell want an MR2 for an everyday car?) and fuel economy, while the 2zz is more for car enthusiasts.

Yep, both have their good and their bad advantages but there is a turbo system called ats than has no turbo lag and a wider power band which diesel are currently using.

@darksniper1982 7s Supras are the exception, not the rule. Any car that can run sub 14s stock is fast, and the SRT-4 can keep up with or beat cars that cost 2x+ as much. Your Supra was a low 13 second car when it came out and cost $40K. The SRT-4 was $24K new, and with just $6-8K of worthwhile mods will run 11's. I'm not disputing the 2jz engine in the Supra is better, but to make claims that the SRT-4 is unreliable, and that any car incapable of running a 7 second 1/4 is slow, is ridiculous.
@Masterthief30 Supra's only ran low 13's because of the gentlemen's agreement, which limited stock hp and speed for japanese car's. With the limiter off the Supra was a early 12 second car stock. And I have a friend with a SRT-4 and he has nothing but problems with it, constantly working on it, hence its unreliable. It took extreme modification just for him to run 26 lbs of boost. Where as I did it with 1/2 the mods.

You wanna see an impressive 4 cyl you look up "The fastest 4 cyl in the world" video, its Brent Rau's Eclipse running 6's, they attended 7 of 8 of the NHRA events and qualified #1 in all 7 events. And they made them add more weight to the car and restricted the car to a smaller turbo, so it could have gone faster. It reset the world record 3x in one year. And the engine is smaller than a SRT-4, its a 2.0L

I hope that isn't on the stock turbo otherwise it's no wonder he has horrible reliability. That's 2 lbs outside of the stocker's safety range, and 5 lbs outside of its efficiency range. Only an idiot would run that even on a ported stock turbo.
You asked for a 7s SRT-4, so that's what I found. I know what the gentleman's agreement was, but the fact is that for less than $10K in mods A SRT-4 could run with ZR1s. I have nothing but respect for Supras and their performance, but just because the Supra is fast it doesn't mean that SRT-4s are slow. 13.7s 1/4 stock is fast, and they can hang with low 13s cars on a roll. They're fun cars, fast, and contrary to your friend's example, largely reliable. Cheap interior is my only complaint.
@TheSirVtec Really? The neons been winning autox/track star races 1st in class and 3-5 OVERALL since like 03. It handles the slalom quicker than a 350z. Thats a RWD car in case you'd forgotten and the best handling car in the world (according to its owners) I think people give the neon too much shit without really considering all its done in its short years of production. Neon's in general have been around for quite some time. Besides, I think this Neon is doing a pretty good job of keeping up considering the weight difference. :)
Neons lasted for over 10 years and I have a 98 R/T with 148,000 on it and it is still running strong and looks good. It only has 150 hp, but at just over 2,000 lbs, it runs decent. $11,400.00 new by the way at gets 31-37.7 mpg.
It's referred to as a Dodge Neon SRT-4 for a reason. SRT = Street Racing Technologies. A performance department of Dodge, like SVT for Ford. the number is for the engine size. 4 for 4 cylinders. Like the SRT-6 Crossfire, for 6 cylinders. Neon because that's what the fuck it is and that's the platform it's built off of. Next thing you're gonna say is the SRT-6 isn't a fucking Crossfire. I've been car shopping for too long. I've determined I want a roadster, but they all seem to be underpowered except the S2K which is still under-torqued. A 350Z roadster just feels to heavy and not snappy enough, not tossable like an MX-5 or an MR-2.
BTW the cosworth supercharger gives an NC MX-5 about 240 whp. So I'm guessing about 260bhp???

@darksniper1982 7s Supras are the exception, not the rule. Any car that can run sub 14s stock is fast, and the SRT-4 can keep up with or beat cars that cost 2x+ as much. Your Supra was a low 13 second car when it came out and cost $40K. The SRT-4 was $24K new, and with just $6-8K of worthwhile mods will run 11's. I'm not disputing the 2jz engine in the Supra is better, but to make claims that the SRT-4 is unreliable, and that any car incapable of running a 7 second 1/4 is slow, is ridiculous.

@Masterthief30 Supra's only ran low 13's because of the gentlemen's agreement, which limited stock hp and speed for japanese car's. With the limiter off the Supra was a early 12 second car stock. And I have a friend with a SRT-4 and he has nothing but problems with it, constantly working on it, hence its unreliable. It took extreme modification just for him to run 26 lbs of boost. Where as I did it with 1/2 the mods.

You wanna see an impressive 4 cyl you look up "The fastest 4 cyl in the world" video, its Brent Rau's Eclipse running 6's, they attended 7 of 8 of the NHRA events and qualified #1 in all 7 events. And they made them add more weight to the car and restricted the car to a smaller turbo, so it could have gone faster. It reset the world record 3x in one year. And the engine is smaller than a SRT-4, its a 2.0L

I hope that isn't on the stock turbo otherwise it's no wonder he has horrible reliability. That's 2 lbs outside of the stocker's safety range, and 5 lbs outside of its efficiency range. Only an idiot would run that even on a ported stock turbo.

You asked for a 7s SRT-4, so that's what I found. I know what the gentleman's agreement was, but the fact is that for less than $10K in mods A SRT-4 could run with ZR1s. I have nothing but respect for Supras and their performance, but just because the Supra is fast it doesn't mean that SRT-4s are slow. 13.7s 1/4 stock is fast, and they can hang with low 13s cars on a roll. They're fun cars, fast, and contrary to your friend's example, largely reliable. Cheap interior is my only complaint.

Thats a RWD car in case you'd forgotten and the best handling car in the world (according to its owners) I think people give the neon too much shit without really considering all its done in its short years of production. @halofan373 There are lots of guys who run faster than 14 stock. Depends on where you are altitude from sea level, weather out that day and how well u can bang through the gears. I dont know where the hell I got 13.5 from but I have read on forums that some guys will get as low as 13.6 bone stock! Not really hard to believe, Lots of dudes out there fatser than factory times. Neons lasted for over 10 years and I have a 98 R/T with 148,000 on it and it is still running strong and looks good. It only has 150 hp, but at just over 2,000 lbs, it runs decent. $11,400.00 new by the way at gets 31-37.7 mpg.

It's referred to as a Dodge Neon SRT-4 for a reason. SRT = Street Racing Technologies. A performance department of Dodge, like SVT for Ford. the number is for the engine size. 4 for 4 cylinders. Like the SRT-6 Crossfire, for 6 cylinders. Neon because that's what the fuck it is and that's the platform it's built off of. Next thing you're gonna say is the SRT-6 isn't a fucking Crossfire. Learn more about cars. First S2000s don't go for 30K anymore. 2nd 3-4k for a turbo kit? You've been looking in the wrong places. Besides I don't have an S2000. I have a MAzdaspeed6, THAT is a fullsize family sedan, and it will dust your "family car" in a drag and around the track, how do I know? Because I've raced more SRT-4s than I would care to remember and the only time I've lost was against a guy with all out mods who had to use his nitrous to beat me.

I find it even more ironic you're at EXACTLY 400WHP. All the time I've spent at friend's shops and seeing dynos I've yet to see even numbers, like 500 or 600whp. GT40 is bigger, obviously his CFMs higher than even a GT35r at the same PSI... pull your head out of your ass. I'll gladly race you given the chance, I don't roll race either, real drag racing is from a dig. Neither is your Supra with a T-88 because that's not going to pass emissions or dB testing on the exhaust. You want a good idea of what I have? Then check the vid for "watch?v=pZEFvnsnqNk" . Similar 3.8L inline6 setup. I can still drive it on the street just the same. I've driven it from Miami to Orlando. Think before you speak. Don't assume you know all there is to know.

First, it's THOUGH.... 2nd, the seven key on my keyboard doesn't work dickless so I couldn't put the little and symbol. 3rd, I've already raced plenty of Shitty Rice Trap-4s in my car. I've been car shopping for too long. I've determined I want a roadster, but they all seem to be underpowered except the S2K which is still under-torqued. A 350Z roadster just feels to heavy and not snappy enough, not tossable like an MX-5 or an MR-2.
BTW the cosworth supercharger gives an NC MX-5 about 240 whp. So I'm guessing about 260bhp???

Ya you would think it would be faster but Spyders are lighter. I'm still guessing the power-to-weight ratio on the MX-5 is going to be a bit better.
But even though MX-5's have brilliant steering feel, you can't beat the mid-engined goodness on those spyders. And they are just cool.
