Brand New is so unique. Their lyrics and sound hit somewhere deep inside me where most music doesn't..
I know everyone hates this, and no one will probably listen, but I'm a college kid with the dream of making music the rest of my life. I did a cover of "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot," it would mean a lot to me if you guys checked out my page, and give me a thumbs up so I can be seen by more people. Thank you everyone!
There are some great lines about human nature "Id drive my car off of a bridge, If I knew that you weren't inside"showcases compassion, we do not care for ourselves as much as we care for others.
"Id drown all these crying babies, If I knew that their mothers wouldn't cry." For me this whole song is a about what we as humans are capable of when there are no consequences This man he would arrest if he "had the time" is an example of this. It then goes on to say that he could help this man but "its hard to be the better man when you're still lying." we can only help ourselves.
Maybe he's singing about a part of himself he doesn't like, and that part he would handcuff if he had the time. Then it says he'd drown babies, to let that part of himself die. Then the whole car part and the part about robbing families im still trying to figure out. then he says you can lay on your back and be beaten or you can put up you're fist and fight meaning you can let it overtake you and become the person you're trying not to be, or you could try to be the better man.
MJ... good overall catch on the theme of the song.
I honestly suggest you don't ever begin to understand this song, it's a very dark place.. so if you don't understand what I'm saying, be glad.
The lyrics are about crimes/punishments... how we weigh them based on physical punishments--when in reality, all crimes are exactly the same... whether you steal music from the internet by downloading it, or whether you steal from a bank---the only difference between you and "criminal" is you're(cont)
not willing to risk the punishment. How others would steal from others knowing they would commit the crimes knowing no punishments... so the question is, would you commit the crime knowing no punishment? is it only the fear of punishment that keeps you in line?
The lyrics outline how even killing yourself is fine, knowing the only person you're hurting is yourself.
How we're quick to "arrest" others when in reality we're no different than the criminals at heart... we just think we're better.
so in the end, the question is, are you really trying to better yourself? have you given up the fight? do you even give it a thought to better yourself?
or as Jesse puts it, "you're still lying..."
...can you not even rid yourself of something so simple as lying?
This is a deep dark questionable song, many don't understand it...
And these questions are all rhetorical for thought, not directly aimed at you mjbeasty...
In my opinion its more about someone doing something terribly hurtful to someone, that isn't necessarily illegal. And the only reason they would do something that malicious is because they knew there was no punishment for those actions.
The first verse is explaining that they did something terrible that he, in his own mind, feels like they should be arrested for as if they'd "committed a terrible crime".
He then goes on to explain in the second and third verses of the severity of what the person did to him was by metaphorically comparing it to taking everything a family has and drowning babies, provided there would be no consequences.
Then the chorus explains how hard it is to be a good person, as you explained.
The whole car episode would explain how he feels about not wanting to be alive after what the person did to him. And that he would kill himself if there weren't any moral consequences after death for those actions.
@mjbeasty same. but more.. i think its about the human soul. were just.. inherently good and bad. in the end we place our feet where we go.. but sometimes we'll lie to ourselves to get there too.
@mjbeasty This is the truth and pain of every mans heart. Every man has a "evil" or burden that no one but said man can understand. Its pretty awful, but great all in the same time. There's no real point in trying to figure it out, it just is. Brand New did a great job at painting a small picture of it.
it's hard to be the better man when you forget your trying

For me this song is all about a guy you has an internal stuggle with himself. He wants to be good, but at the same time... he just cant.
