I remember seeing this as a segment on a PBS program dedicated to the music of Duke Ellington. Thanks much for posting it here....what a songstress for the old standards.
A trivial note: Mammy Two Shoes sings a few lines of this song in the opening scene of the MGM cartoon THE MOUSE COMES TO DINNER starring Tom and Jerry.
I also remember watching the PBS special where this was aired. Her vocals are great on this live track, just slightly better than on the album. TORCH is the best of her standard albums...so far.
From the groundbreaking album, "Torch". Kids, this isn't "jazz," people who know nothing about music call all songs written before 1960 "jazz". This is what's known as a "standard".
@rudolf030 ~ A lot of intelligent people care, as well as most people who know music. Do you go through life with that "Who cares?" attitude? Thank God you don't live next door to me. Is this the way your family brought you up, "Who cares?"? Maybe if you cared, you might learn a little something, once in a while.
Lighten up Ed. Do you really care if next time he programs Deep House he gets New Age? Even if he lives next door? With a family that's teaching him music is for listening, not fighting. LOL
@edwardjames50 Well, I don't see any reason to get so agitated. I didn't do anybody harm, just tried to explain that there is no need to put a label on everything, It is narrow-minded and definitely not artistic in any way. Maybe that's a lesson that needs to be learned by you! But on one point I do agree with you: Thank God that you don't live next to me and I pity the ones who do...
One of the truly great torch songs. Dedicated to the precious memory of an old friend O. Kozney who loved Carly's TORCH album (of which this was a part). It is one of mine also. (One really needs to purchase Carly's albumn and listen to it in a romantic atmosphere enhanced by a loved one, candlelight, exotic wine, fruit, and cheeses. H.

So beautiful song! I've never liked jazz too much, but after this song... Brilliant!

@NeMetov ~ This is NOT jazz. It is simply an old standard. People seem to think that all pre-rock music is "jazz". Again, this AIN'T jazz!!!!!

@edwardjames50
quite.

@edwardjames50 Who cares whether it's supposed to be called jazz or not: either you like it, or you don't!
