I clicked on the 'remix' version floating on here to show my wife 'Nothingness' before we see them live, heard the tinny bass/drum, stopped, looked and found this one. My wife said, somewhat annoyed that she'd been duped, 'sounds better!'.
Read an interview of Doug Wimbish in Bass Player (I think it was in 1999 on the heels of the Jungle Funk release) he got that great swooping high lick using a DigiTech Whammy pedal. But I could buy one an still not sound that %#((*@@%% good! Can't wait to see those guys 9/24.
This was their best album in my opinion, it holds up the best after so many years and it's their most mature release. Glover, Reid, Wimbish, Calhoun, man what a fucking lineup. Can't go wrong there.
So much melancholy when I listen to it....The mood of music and lyrics...I used to perform it in Italy just when it came out with a band of guys from Florence, and every time I used to feel a lot of commotion.
Its a shame there isnt more. Black people just wont support it. They are addicted to that ignorant hip hop garbage which makes is so detrimental on so many levels.
well for the most part i'd agree with you. but isn't there some good rappers out there now. i mean they're not all that mainstream like Lupe Fiasco CommonSense Talib Kwali etc.? i realize you wrote this like 1 month ago but i dont feel all of rap sux. except for that soulja shit music
I am a drummer and I always liked the band a lot. I know a lot of musicians and most of them when asked about LC say that if the guitarist wasn't into dissonance so much they would like them more. I think they were all good. The drummer is outstanding. He has a lot more chops than he shows in his recorded works but he plays for the song.
Scott Ian of Anthrax said it - 'If they were white, they would have sold twice as many records.' Lots of influential black groups get underrated. Bad Brains, 24/7 Spyz and others I can't recall right now are not given their due because of race.. Black people are into more than just hip-hop, and were instrumental in the development of rock as well as other musical forms. Race does not equal musical genre, but sadly it happens that ethnicity comes into play when determining success and fame.
I could never forget Fishbone. Some of THE most important albums and songs ever made, and they are still going strong. It's hard to list all of the bands, but I'm sure others will remind me of who I missed. From Chuck Berry to Jimi Hendrix, Ray Charles to Stevie Wonder...
These guys were one of my favorite bands in the late 80's and early 90's. Unfortunately, they got swarmed over by the grunge movement (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Candlebox...etc.). The musicianship became less important then the tuned down anger rock that pushed these guys aside.
I picked up on living colour back when "vivid" came out. Before they toured with the rolling stones."Times up" was always a great cd to listen to on the sony walkman. The song "nothingness" however has had a way to permiate my soul. I've had this song in my head for days at times. Not many songs have EVER done this.
One of the best songs ever period. There is an acoustic version with just Corey and a piano out there somewhere that gives me chills every time I hear it
Blackdragon so so true.Best time for music of all styles across all boundaries...great bands we will probably never see the like ever again.(sadly 4 us)
I have every album this band has put out, and that was before disc. Thanks for putting this video on the Tube I didn't even know there was one, very cool.
The song is deep. I believe Will's father died and thats the inspiration behind it. I love the line he wrote about Nothingness.."Nothing lasts forever." Its such a cool twist.
These guys were so freakin' good live. I saw them in San Francisco at a small club and got the luxury of sitting on stage for the entire concert...so eclectic and cool.
Jas24x4, you ain't lying! Living Colour gave the best live performance I have ever seen back in 1990 in New Britain, Connecticut. They just got back from a year on the road touring with Anthrax. Killer musicians, tight band, nonstop energy from the beginning of the show to the end.
this is a GREAT video from a band that "said something", as well as played like demons. yeah, hard to find good s**t anymore.
BTW, Corey is NOT Danny GLover's son. Corey was raised in a foster home in NY; an old friend of mine lived with him when they were kids and introduced me in 2002.
Awesome song! Awesome rockers! Where is the good music for now.......Gotta always listen to the oldies. I had a dog that I named Vernon Reed. HA Kick ass!
I saw them warm up for the Rolling Stones in 89 in the old Foxbourough stadium...I thought they were great, so did my brothers and all of the fans my age.But some of the old timers hard core, hard drinking, hard snorting burnouts booed them and yelled racial slurs.
So much for the free thinking children of the 60's.
I always loved that subtle cricket sound in the background - this song is absolutely fantastic and Stain is an unbelievable album. These guys really make me sad for the state of modern 'rock' music, which is 98% brainless crap.
Agreed, although the music you speak of still exists today most of it won't see the light of day. MTV has bled out the true artistry of music in the main-stream and formed a generic sound for every genre of music. Imagine where music would be if the momentem of the 90's carried through to present day.
that's so true, blackdragon and wisetrashman. It all went wrong when record labels decided making quick profits was better than finding talent and allowing it to develop.
This is such a beautiful song. It's a shame it didn't become a hit, but the grunge scene was taking over. I'm glad they didn't change their style and start wearing flannel like a lot of bands did at the time.
Excelente video...hace unos meses atras tuve la suerte de verlos en vivo...musicos super virtuosos, tuve la suerte de conocer personalmente a Corey, muy buen tipo.

just for the record... they arent exactly underestimated... there are a whole fuckin lot of people that know about Living Coulor... theyve had a good many big hits... they just arent a newer band... they been around for a while... so theyve kinda came and gone... they were bad as hell though
Seems they're mostly (only?) known for "Cult of Personality," which was on their first album back in 1988. I thought, musically and maturity-wise, they got better with each album. I think "Stain" is their overall best album. "Collideoscope" is also good, but it seems they've passed by their "inspiration" prime, but I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled off a great album, but it seems there's too much tension between the members, don't know if that ever fully went away.
I get angry thinking that a band like L.C. doesn't have room in MTV and other shit like that. Their music has no age, no color but it's just supreme...
Wimbish played on hundereds of records, from Mick Jagger, to Carley Simon, etc. He also toured with the biggest singers and musicians in the world. He also played the bass on "Rappers Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang and also "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash. From 1979 to 1984 he played the bass on every recording released by Sugarhill Records. Always makes me tear up a bit when I hear it. I didn't even know they made a video of it. Man I'd love to have that to watch on tv. That song from Corey's vocals as got the best ambience for a song EVER. I always have to listen to the song at least three times before going on to another song.
Wow,what a song and video. Here is a bit of info on the vocals. I read that Corey did the vocals outside and sang into a type of satellite dish. That's why you here the outdoor ambience(crickets etc..)when the track starts (easier to hear on better resolution)It also gives the vocals that fantastic ambient quality.love how innovative the band are.
oh bro, I knew about that before I even heard the recording. Can't remember how I heard about it though. It made fore some very eerie sounding vocals.
Holy Fertilizer! This is f00kin' awesome! Thanks for the post! When I saw them in '93, "Nothingness" was one of the high points - stage fog and trippy purple lights. "Bi" was another - very theatrical & Corey was hilarious.

Not all LC songs have aged well, but "Nothingness" is still great. Stain was such a weird little gem.

Holy Fertilizer! This is f00kin' awesome! Thanks for the post! When I saw them in '93, "Nothingness" was one of the high points - stage fog and trippy purple lights. "Bi" was another - very theatrical & Corey was hilarious.

Great song -- beautiful guitar work by Vernon Reid. Great vocals, a funky beat and some smooth-ass fretless thump. Awesome. Thanks for posting.
